Hi Thomas,

No problem chief. Maybe when you finish Montezuma's Revenge, Race Way, Star
Trek Final Conflict, your Universal Screen Access screen reader program, your
Linux page, a monopoly game and the other games that you mentioned that you
want to do you could then work on a couple of good, non cheap free card games.

Hi Jim,
(Smile) Quite right. Sorry about that chief.
Anyway, my initial point was I could write simple card games, board
games, etc that don't cost me much for Linux if there was demand for it,
but not allot of the same grade of games that you would see on Windows
unless I see a greater market for it.

Hi Thomas.

Thanks for the information. I thought it was off topic because this list is
only for games, and I asked about the accessibility of Ubuntu.
Where can I find a accessible version of a desctop version of Linux and the
other things I need to get it to work with speech?
I have only tried Oralux wich I find very cool, but I also want to try the
desctop version of Linux.

Best regards Søren.

Hi Soren,
Wile this is off topic I think in the interest of everyone on list I'll
answer your question on list just so everyone knows the answer.
Yes, Linux is becoming much more accessible in recent years. The Ubuntu
Linux OS is by far probably the most accessible with the Fedora Linux OS
as a good second.
One reason I tell newbies to go with Ubuntu is you can run the entire os
off of your cd drive to test it out before installing it. It also can be
run from thumb drives, portible hard drives, and is really a nice little
version of the Linux OS.
Incorperated into Ubuntu is the Orca screen reader which will not only
read the Ubuntu installation for you, but is pretty speech friendly with
the Firefox web browser, Evolution email client, Open Office, and many
core Linux applications now.
That said I don't want anyone to download and install this thinking they
are getting the same access quality as say Jaws 8.0 or Window Eyes 6.1.
Orca works well, and will help you successfully use Ubuntu or Fedora
Linux on a daily basis. However, access still is not on a one to one
comparison with Windows or Windows screen readers. full and total Access
is still a few years behind.
For example, the X-Windows environment offers two desktops Gnome and
KDE. Of the two KDE is the most like Windows XP, but is still
unaccesible, and won't be accessible until KDE 4.0 which is still being
developed from scratch. Gnome however is not bad, and is functionally
usable, but there are still apps and parts of Gnome that don't work as
well with Orca as they should.
I do think as far as accessible games for Linux are needed now that the
OS can be used successfully by a blind user, I have done it many times,
but there is no commercial market to do so.
I could probably write some cheap Java based games that are like Jim
Kitchen games, but actually doing a STFC, Montezuma's Revenge, or
Raceway for Linux would be very time consuming with little cash insentive.

Once I clear away some of the major issues I am dealing with Montezuma's

As for Universal Screen Access I am still writing that screen reader. So
there is no official web site for it yet.

Hello Josh. I have frotz for Linux working fine and it plays Infocom and

compile it myself because the binaries available did not work under

Hi Josh,
Yes, there are some Linux infocom interpreters that will work with Orca
under Ubuntu 7.x.
As far as running games like STFC the major problem is there is no
support for DirectX under Linux. There is a .Net Framework called Mono
which would run the game, but no support for DirectX which is a core
feature of the games. There is no Sapi support.
In order to run games under Linux I'd have to rewrite the games to
support stuff like SDL, OpenAl, and Gnome-Speech which is quite an under
taking.
The alternative would be to move to a Java code base.

Re: [Audyssey] linux games for blind people

2007-08-21 Thread Søren Jensen

 Hi,
Does anyone know if any of the linux infocom game interpreters will work
either under linux ubuntu, or the console under ubuntu using speakup or
orca? I would also want to keep xp on this machine to play games on
 there,
because as far as I know I can't play stfc and games like that under any
form of linux or in any linux distribution. or can I?

Re: [Audyssey] Linux Games.

2006-05-28 Thread Jude DaShiell
Another tip I've read for grml is to use swspeak as a boot parameter. If
the computer has a sound card grml can find and talk to properly be
prepared for speech to also come out on the sound card.

 never heard of this.
 Damn well wish I did.
I ran from university fedora with speakup.
The external fuzzing synth kept fuzzing failing.
I had to bang the fizzer befor it would work for a few fizzing seconds.
 Really got me mad.
I will back this file up.
Depending on what I need to do to get grml working maybe all I need
to do is script the stupid thing.

It has speakup as soon as you get it from the site. What you should do, is

easy or you can get help from your teacher, how ever, using speakup, it
is possible to do it by your self).
Then go to the accessible wiki page for GRML at
 http://wiki.grml.org/doku.php?id=accessibility
and do what it says to get speakup running when it is on the hard drive
(yes, it is not as easy to get speakup to run the first time when it is on a
hard drive, and you will need sited assistance for it(at least I did).).
And, what is great is you don't need a hardware sinth.
It is completely compatible with Debian Linux, because it is based on it. I
love GRML, and have it right beside my Windows machine. What I thought was
funny, was when I even upgraded from GRML 6 to GRML 7, I still did not have
to restart Linux. Hahaha, just try to think of not restarting windows after
a major update like that. Lol
 HTH.

well I tried to get a screen reader for Linux, but have been unable to as of

yet. The game programming class is being taught in Linux, but I am the only
Windows machine in there. People have told me about different screen readers

for Linux, but I am not advanced enough to get it up and running and my
teacher has been working on compiling it and trying to get it to work, but
has been unsuccessful as of yet, so I will be stuck on Windows. But with the

game library that I will be using, it is compatible to run on both Windows
 and Linux systems.

Hey I will definitely check this out. I will be e-mailing this link to my
teacher, so that maybe with both of us working on it, we can get it solved.
Thanks so much.
