you, if at all possible, research to verify that what you are about to

faulty information due to a lack of research, they will receive a

Any last minute thoughts, suggestions, or comments before I add this

Hi Charles,

Smile. That's the basic idea. I really don't want people giving out
bad advice that might be taken as fact by a list member, and it turns
out to be bad advice. For instance, telling someone to format their
hard drive and reinstall Windows just because they have a problem with
a certain application or a game is extremely bad advice and such
people who give out that kind of advice need to be moderated or
removed from the list if they continually offer up such advice as the
best solution to the problem at hand, nor is that the only example of
poorly researched information over the last few months. Its merely the
most recent and most destructive example that comes to mind.

Hi Zack and all,

Well, to clarify things a bit, I am not so much concerned with
occasional or accidental misinformation as I am when that information
is patently false or just bad because the poster doesn't do his or her
research on a given topic. I think we are all prone to a bit of
misinformation from time to time like accidentally supplying the wrong
web site or email address when asked, and there is no harm done to
anyone. Its a mistake, and the poster can apologize and move on.. Its
an entirely different situation when a poster tries to answer a
question of which he or she obviously knows nothing about the subject
being discussed and someone else who knows better has to go back and
set the record straight. That kind of misinformation is just
irritating, wastes everyone's time, and shouldn't be aloud to continue
on list.

Cheers!

Like the example of someone suggestion that you reformat your hard drive due
to a modem issue. Someone might do it, even though it obviously would not
solve the issue, and cause a lot of totally unnecessary wasted time and
work. The suggestor obviously knew nothing about the issue, because a
reformat is not always the answer.

Re: [Audyssey] Updating the List Guidelines

2013-08-12 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Charles,

Well, that is a rather extreme example, but yes that is one
possibility. A more practical example of misinformation we would like
to avoid might include the incident a couple of days back where a list
member mistakenly said BGT costs $700 when in reality it costs $399.
Of course, that single mistake would only merit a correction and a
warning from the moderators, but it is none-the-less a straight
forward case of the list member not having checked to get his facts
straight before stating so on list. This part is speculation, but what
if someone who was considering buying that product took that
misinformation to be correct and decided not to purchase BGT believing
the $700 price tag? That simple mistake would have cost one of our
developers some money because of some list member not verifying his
facts. Not saying it did happen, but it could happen in theory. The
basic idea here is that people should be more careful about stating
things as fact if they aren't sure, and we want things to be as
reliable as possible.

Cheers!

Hello everyone,

As much as I hate being a Nazi about the list rules and guidelines
certain posts have forced me to conclude that the guidelines need to
be amended to insure the accuracy and validity of some of the things
that get posted to the list. Certain members, for whatever reason,
continuously post false and misleading information that could be
accepted by a list member who may not know any better and thus that
information could become harmful and detrimental to the reader.
Therefore I am proposing the following guideline to be added to the
rules which we may modify and discuss before it becomes official.

"Because we get new members who may or may not know about the subjects
posted to the list, and this also may include longtime members who
just don't know what is and is not correct, it is very important that
you, if at all possible, research to verify that what you are about to
post is correct information. Incorrect information or advice on how
to fix a computer or game issue can cause damage to a list member's
computer or corrupt a game, which can cost that member money and or
headaches unnecessarily. If a list member habitually posts obviously
faulty information due to a lack of research, they will receive a
warning. Continuing the practice may result in a removal from the
list. This guideline is to insure that list members do get the
correct advice or help they need, and they will also know that what
they read is from a reliable source."

Any last minute thoughts, suggestions, or comments before I add this
to the official list rules and guidelines?

Thanks.

That kind of misinformation is just
irritating, wastes everyone's time, and shouldn't be aloud to continue
on list.

Cheers!

Hi Raul,

Yeah, I know. Especially, when it doesn't take that much work to
research the problem using Google, Yahoo, etc. Some times it just
comes down to experience. Something some so-called tecchs don't have
when they consistently present bad advice.

I didn't read the whole thread (only the start and the last few

that somebody who clearly states that their information is
somewhat uncertain be at least partially exempt from the rule. If
I offer advice, but make sure I inform the reader that I'm not
certain of the accuracy of my statement, I personally feel that,
while I shouldn't deliberately give misinformation, I have taken
steps to ensure that I not mislead the reader.

Re: [Audyssey] Updating the List Guidelines

2013-08-20 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi John,

That's a given. Obviously someone who states they are not sure about
something or makes some other qualification to the effect the
information may not be accurate would not fall under this guideline
because they told the person up front they were uncertain about the
information's accuracy. What this guideline is being considered to do
is to cut down on the kind of messages where by someone gives purely
false information without stopping to consider the accuracy of the
post he/she sends. Such as Mr. Format's sage advise to format a
computer when he doesn't know the answer to a technical question
thereby giving very bad advice to an unsuspecting end user and
showing his ignorance to the rest of us who know better. :D

Cheers!
