Re: [Audyssey] Wii for the blind

2007-05-23 Thread Josh
would it be possible for blind developers to develop blind friendly games
for the different video game consoles out there? That would be cool if you
could wipe the console's memory, put linux on it, and then blind developers
could make the console completely accessible and write blind friendly games
for playstation etcetera. Wjat you'd do is buy a playstation or whatever
insert your cd. the cd would wipe the memory and flash the game console with
linux and a linux screen reader. A menu would come up allowing you to play
an accessible game, watch a dvd whose menus would also talk kind of like the
context menus in power dvd, or play and navigate a cd. That would be cool.
Either that or instead of wiping the memory and re-flashing it, one could
add to it allowing you to switch between the normal sighted mode, or go into
linux and play blind-friendly games.

No need to wipe the memory, as we can program games for the Wii directly
and take advantage of the Wii's unique features.
I am doing some research into this, but at this point I'm not sure how
complicated this would be.

Re: [Audyssey] Wii for the blind

2007-05-23 Thread Shadow Dragon
It'd be impossible to wipe the memory of a console, I'm sure they have
protection against that. And there's absolutely no way Linux would work on a
ps2, maybe, just maybe on something like a ps3, but it'd be impossible on
anything earlier I'm sure, simply because it wouldn't be the same. The
hardware and software are all carefully programmed to take full advantage of
all high def sound and graphics hardware, and even if you could get linux to
run on any of these consoles, you'd have to reprogram it as well to take
full advantage of the graphics hardware, from the way I see it. And then the
console would be absolutely useless for playing mainstream games on, ruining
the whole point of the system as well. It'd be like trying to play a mac
game on a windows computer, or a windows game on a linux system. So if you
wiped the memory, in effect what you'd be doing is wasting 200 to 600 bucks
on whatever system you purchased.

Re: [Audyssey] Wii for the blind

2007-05-23 Thread Bryan Peterson
I'd be concerned about the legality of doing something like that. Knowing
these big coporations they might have a heart attack if some smalltime
company stars developing titles for their console. Then again since it's not
likely they'll make the effort themselves without serious cash and
statistics, I suppose we have to take any road we can.

No, actually they encourage development of games, as it sells more units
of their hardware.
I'm just not sure at this stage what all is involved in doing so.

Hay Josh there really isn't much speech recognition for lynox yet that I
know of. There is so many different command lines for lynox such as redhat
and others so we just have to keep waiting ok

Re: [Audyssey] Wii for the blind

2007-05-27 Thread jason
Hello everyone it's Jason talking about the wII and other game systems.
I think we should try to to see if we can make these systems accessible for
the blind, I think the right way to approach this matter is getting in
contact with the developers who developed the systems and set up a time and
place to discuss with that individual who we are and to whom it may concern.
Meaning if a blind game developer who is willing to take on the roll of
developing the system for the gblind can be in contact with this
representative and when if developed send him or her the codes if we are
able to figure it out and make it accessible and then posibly go on a
business partnership and then we will not be crossing copy infringement
lines or piracy.
I thought of this as a suggestion
your friend,
Jason
