After many years of not attending in person, I managed to get 2 tickets
to the BBQ Chicken game in Gainesville, and I need to find out where the
best place to park is. Any suggestions? I will probably arrive in
Gainesville around 1pm or so. Anyone going to meet up? Let me know.

Yeah, it was obvious he stretched the ball over the goal and actually downed
it inside the end zone, but then was pulling it back to protect it when it
was knocked loose. So obvious that even a caveman could see it was a
touchdown! ;-)

Meyer on Percy Harvin's fumble at the goal line against Vanderbilt: I
saw the replay as well and Percy Harvin scored a touchdown, he said. It
was a missed call.
I have to make a call to find out what happened. Instant replay showed
that he had the ball laid down (across the goal line) and it was a touchdown

 effort.

Waiting to hear what happens next...maybe nothing, but still curious!!!

not fancy but serves a fine bowl of pho.

* Taste of Saigon is more upscale and a bit better, but

* Hanoi Pho is the newest and most authentic.

Pan-Asian

* Liquid Ginger is upscale but reasonably priced, great for dates.

* Chopstix is a little greasy these days but does a surprisingly
good job with Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese, Malay and more, and you can watch
the alligators glide by on Bivens Arm.

* Bento Cafe has two locations with upscale decor and counter
service. I think of Bento more as a lunch place than a dinner one, though,
unless I'm looking for a quick bite on the way to the movies on Newberry
Road

Mexican

* La Tienda, and the food is as authentic as any you will find this
side of Texas. But don't go there expecting Chi Chi's. This is the real

Indian food

but you won't be disappointed, especially on Saturdays when they usually

Italian

* Fresco. It's lame for any critic to admit this, but I'm also
partial to - heaven forbid - a chain. I think

* Carrabba's does an amazing job night after night.

Pizza

* Satchel's,

* Blue Highway and

* Leonardo's 706, but none of them deliver as far as I know. For
slices near campus, my pick is I Love

* N.Y. Pizza rather than Leonardo's by the Slice or even the
legendary Italian Gator.

Cuban

* Virtually Cuban. I like the Ropa Vieja at

* Fritanga Latin Grill, and the Picadillo at

* La Familia Last but not least, if you must eat lunch on campus, by
far the best and most healthful place for my money is the

* Arrendondo Room on the 4th floor of the Reitz Union. It is not
open at night or on weekends, but it offers a lunch buffet and salad bar for
around $8 including drink.

I know it's against your better judgment because I'm old, the way over 30
sort of old.

I'm so old that if you believe you can't trust anyone over 30, you would
have stopped trusting me before you were born.

But you should trust me now anyway, even as I give you some really old
school advice - clip this column, or bookmark it, because you're going to
want it later.

This is about food, the staff of life, or at least the stuff of life. Sooner
or later, and it probably will be sooner, you're going to get tired of all
that faux food they serve on campus.

Burger King, Moe's, Wendy's, Taco Bell and Chick-fil-A may seem like heaven
now, but it won't take long to get dull. In a week or two, or a month or two
for the truly palate dead among you, you'll be looking for a change.

That's when you should pull out this column and follow my instructions very
carefully.

Want Chinese food? You won't find much in the way of Chinese in this town.
Let me rephrase that. You will find many Chinese restaurants; you just won't
find many good ones. Mr. Han's is the exception.

Think Japanese and you will be much happier.

Your friends all will tell you about Dragonfly Sushi, and they are not
wrong. Dragonfly has very good food and is a great place to see and be seen.
It's a very popular - and pretty expensive - date spot, but my advice is to
try Miya Sushi, and when you do, check out the Korean food they have there.
It's all good and most of it's way spicy.

We are fairly well blessed here with Vietnamese restaurants. All of them are
decent. Saigon Legend is just a quick walk east of campus. It's decidedly
not fancy but serves a fine bowl of pho. Taste of Saigon is more upscale and

Moss laid a building block

Every time Urban Meyer looks up at the 2006 national championship sign
painted on the south end zone wall of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, he says
he thinks back to the night of Nov. 11, 2006, in The Swamp and the play
that made it possible.

The Associated Press

Jarvis Moss blocks a Ryan Succop field goal as time expires on Nov. 11,
2006.

That was one of the great plays ever, Meyer said. If I have a vote, I
think it's the greatest play in the history of Florida football. It
certainly was a monumental moment in my life and our program's life.

If defensive end Jarvis Moss hadn't blocked South Carolina place-kicker
Ryan Succop's 48-yard field goal attempt on the final play of the game
that night, that 2006 national championship sign likely would not be
there today.

It was a block that changed history, and a play that triggered one of
the loudest, wildest celebrations in the history of Florida Field.

It was one of those defining moments where everyone remembers where they
were and what they were doing at the time.

Just before the block, offensive coordinator Dan Mullen was in the
coaches' booth in the press box, his headphones off, his head down on
the desk. Praying, he said.

Defensive coordinator Charlie Strong, the field goal-block coach, could
not bear to watch. Just before the snap, he turned his back to the field
and looked into the stands.

Offensive tackle Phil Trautwein doesn't even remember if he watched or
not. I just remember I was on the sideline praying that something good
would happen.

It did.

With defensive tackles Ray McDonald and Steven Harris caving in the
right side of the USC line, it cleared a path for Moss, who perfectly
timed his leap and blocked Succop's kick with his left hand to preserve
a 17-16 victory over the Gamecocks and former UF coach Steve Spurrier.

The block unleashed an emotional outpouring on the sideline and in the
stands. Some say it was the loudest The Swamp has ever been.

It was a great feeling, Trautwein said. I ran out there and hugged
Jarvis Moss. It was just an unbelievable feeling.

The celebration in the (coaches') box was probably as spirited as the
one on the field, Mullen said. We were jumping on top of each other.
It was one of the most exciting deals in my coaching career.

Strong, who could not watch the kick, knew it was good news by the
reaction of the players on the sideline.

I was looking at our players, and I saw them running onto the field, so
I figured we'd blocked it, Strong said. I turned around, and we had.
It was a great feeling.

In the final seconds, this was a game that seemed to be getting away
from the Gators.

With 3:03 to play, No. 2 quarterback Tim Tebow put Florida up 17-16 with
a 12-yard touchdown run. But the Gamecocks responded and quickly mounted
a drive into UF territory behind the passing of quarterback Blake
Mitchell.

On a second-and-12 play from the UF 34 with less than a minute to play,
the Gamecocks made a play that appeared to put the Gators on the brink
of defeat - a 27-yard pass from Mitchell to Sidney Rice down to the 7.
But the play was negated by a five-yard false start penalty.

Following an incompletion, then an 8-yard pass from Mitchell to Rice,
the Gamecocks called a timeout with eight seconds remaining to set up
Succop with the potential game-winning field goal from 48 yards.

Following the USC timeout, the Gators called a timeout to ice Succop.

Earlier in the second half, the Gators had blocked an extra-point
attempt and a Succop field-goal attempt from 47 yards, so they were
looking for one more block to win the game.

On the UF sideline during the timeout, Strong was preparing to replace
Moss on the kick-block team with defensive end Derrick Harvey.

I looked at Moss and I was like, 'Moss, you've played the whole game,
you're coming out. Derrick Harvey, I want you to go in the game,'
Strong said. Moss is like, 'No, coach, don't take me out, don't take me
out.' Then he looked at Coach Meyer and said, 'Please don't

No, this was not the loudest the stadium has ever been.

I was there for both and the loudest the stadium has ever been was in the

The block unleashed an emotional outpouring on the sideline and

How many Heisman winners have even become coaches?

It's not like O.J. ever became a college football coach.

[gatortalk] Tonight's Basketball game

2008-11-14 Thread Jerry Belloit
I just watched the ball game this evening and I have several reactions I
wish to share:

1. My pre-season optimism is now burst. Somehow I wanted our five new
freshmen to be ready for prime time. Their recruiting hype was great but
they still played like freshmen.

2. I think we will miss Jai until at least mid-season. Nick did
better tonight bringing the ball up, but I am still not convinced that he
can handle a tough press.

3. I hope Vargas heals quickly. We don't seem to have a center. We
have some decent depth at forward, but if we can't pound it in the paint, it
may be a long disappointing season.

4. I wish we had next year's class joining the team in January. We
could use those three.

5. Warner played well. He is improved over last year.

I am thankful for the win, however. This team is deeper than last years. I
don't want to be too negative and it could have been the first TV jitters.

What was all of your impressions?

Jerry

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – An athletic department investigation into alleged
gambling by University of Florida men's basketball standout Nick Calathes
found that the player ran up about $600 in on-line poker debt, according to
 sources familiar with the situation.

Sources said the investigation did not find that Calathes or other Florida
basketball players bet on sporting events, which would be a violation of
 NCAA rules.
