[gatortalk] Pick 'Em results

2009-01-12 Thread John Bowers
Not a lot to say right now other than it sure is great to be a Florida
Gator. The Gators

wrapped up 2008 by bringing home their third National Football Championship,
while

reminding Oklahoma that if the Sooners want 54 points a game, they need to
stay out there

in the Big 12. The SEC is where The Big Boys play! Some of those looks on
Bob Stoops' face

there at the end made me think he probably remembers the SEC. Run along
now, Sooners.

Greg Stewart and James Bilbrey took top honors in Bowl Pick 'Em at 24-10.
Second place went

to Susan Ballard at 23-11. And a four-way tie for third among Ed Melzer,
Patty Tydings,

Randy Lyons, and Richard Sahlie at 22-10.

If you total up the regular season and the bowls together, darned if "the
man behind the

curtain," Oz(zie) Sabina, didn't finish first at 121-94. That's because Oz
writes the

code that produces Pick 'Em and he manipulates the hell out of his picks
every week after

Pick 'Em "closes."

I'm KIDDING! I am KIDDING!

Long-time Pick 'Em whizzes Brad Reckamp and Ken Kirkley went 119-96, and
Bill Perpich and

John Bowers went 118-97.

Thanks for playing, we'll plan on being right back here at the same Tebow
Time, the same

Tebow Channel, when the Gators kickoff 2009.

Absolutely got there early. But it wasn't illegal because there wasn't a
flag!

I have it on Tivo in HD and paused it at the point where the ball is
hitting Major in the back of the head as his helmet is in the chest of the
receiver. Of course at full speed, it was bang-bang, not a bad no call.

Overall, I thought the officiating was okay. It was an ACC crew, Ron
Cherry was the head official and he was not a part of the Swindle. He is
famous for his 'Giving him the bidness' call during NC State/Maryland - youtube
it, hilarious.

The officials generally let both sides play, some bad calls, some good. I
thought they let OU hold all night, but I also think we got away with some
early hits, some delays (watch Dunlap kick the ball on the scrimmage line 2 or
3 times to keep OU from the hurry up), and some illegal contact by our DBs.
The unsportsmanlike penalties were a little baffling, the OU receiver on their
first possession does the 1st down signal, no flag. We do it on our first
possession, flag. #5 on Ou puts his knee into Tebow's head, no flag, lifts up
Harvins legs (not as bad as it looked, no twisting), no flag. But Tebow does a
Gator Chomp to the @#$&@$ that has been jawing all night, flag. Oh well, they
are used to the ACC, must have seen too many SOW and Scum games.

Absolutely got there early.  But it wasn't illegal because there wasn't a flag!I have it on Tivo in HD and paused it at the point where the ball is hitting Major in the back of the head as his helmet is in the chest of the receiver.  Of course at full speed, it was bang-bang, not a bad no call.Overall, I thought the officiating was okay.  It was an ACC crew, Ron Cherry was the head official and he was not a part of the Swindle.  He is famous for his 'Giving him the bidness' call during NC State/Maryland - youtube it, hilarious. The officials generally let both sides play, some bad calls, some good.  I thought they let OU hold all night, but I also think we got away with some early hits, some delays (watch Dunlap kick the ball on the scrimmage line 2 or 3 times to keep OU from the hurry up), and some illegal contact by our DBs.  The unsportsmanlike penalties were a little baffling, the OU receiver on their first possession does the 1st down signal, no flag.  We do it on our first possession, flag.  #5 on Ou puts his knee into Tebow's head, no flag, lifts up Harvins legs (not as bad as it looked, no twisting), no flag.  But Tebow does a Gator Chomp to the @#$&@$ that has been jawing all night, flag.  Oh well, they are used to the ACC, must have seen too many SOW and Scum games.Ken K.

Having watched the game again, I can pretty confidently state that the
biggest play of the game was not a play at all.

Oklahoma does not run a true no-huddle. It lines up quickly and, if the
defense is not prepared, runs an immediate play. If the defense is properly
aligned, then Bradford backs off center, looks to the sideline to signal in
a play, and then signals the play to his WRs.

In a true no-huddle, either several plays are called in advance when no time
can run off the clock (such as after an incomplete pass) and are run
consecutively, or the plays are called by the QB as he approaches the line
and signalled by him to his WRs as he approaches.

A true no-huddle also appears to have a wider complement of plays, the
Oklahoma offense seemed to just have a few "quick-hit" plays it would revert
to if the defense had not yet lined up.

So, the key to me was Strong recognizing this and making certain that the
defense was aware enough (and conditioned enough) to be in a proper
alignment before Oklahoma was ready to snap the ball. As a result, Bradford
was continually walking away from center. I will count the number of times
when I watch the game a third time, but I believe that this happened almost
2/3rds of the time.

Receiving the play from the sideline and then signalling the new play to the
WRs took almost every second of the 35 second clock for Bradford,
dramatically reducing the number of plays that Oklahoma could run. I had
read that Oklahoma had been averaging 88 offensive plays, it may have had
half of that against us.

Who would have thought that the key to controlling the tempo of the game
against Oklahoma was as simple as the defense lining up quickly and
properly? None of the analysts (even after the game), but apparently our
coaches figured it out.

I keep waiting for CSS to replay the BCS Championship game like they did for
the SEC Championship game. They played it about 5 times the week after the
game. I guess that now we are into b'ball season, they don't have room on
their schedule to replay the game. I watched the SECCG every time CSS replayed
the game and it just got better when you're not chewing your nails and pacing a
hole into the carpet.

They caught us one time. It was the play where they scored their second td.

The thing about lining up is that it stops the defense from substituting. We
figured out how to do that though.

We also seemed to be able to predict what type of offense they were running.
3rd and long was pretty easy to defend, nor had they been in that situation
very often during the season.

Our last drive consumed over 6 minutes. That would also keep them from
running a lot of offensive plays. J

Well, I'm not sure that I would call Hawaii and UM cupcakes, although
these two certainly fit the bill.

Over the years, we have had some decent non-FSU non-conference games;
Southern Cal, Oklahoma State, Syracuse. Even Southern Miss or East
Carolina would be a sterner test than Troy and Charleston Southern.

Then, but luck or otherwise, our two rotating SEC-West teams are
pretty close to the bottom of the heap (apologies Bert). Throw in
likely down years for Tenn & Georgia, and I'd wager that our SOS will
be bottom 20% next year.

Only one bye week all season... Oct 3... which just happens to be when I
scheduled my family's annual reunion. Smart cookie, eh? ;-)

I agree that it's troublesome not to have that extra week of practice before

2009-01-12 Thread Oliver Barry
They caught us one time. It was the play where they scored their second
td.

The thing about lining up is that it stops the defense from
substituting. We figured out how to do that though.

We also seemed to be able to predict what type of offense they were
running. 3rd and long was pretty easy to defend, nor had they been in
that situation very often during the season.

Our last drive consumed over 6 minutes. That would also keep them from
running a lot of offensive plays. :-)

Subject: [gatortalk] Re: [gatornews] [SUN]: 5 biggest plays of the BCS
Championship Game (Andreu)

Having watched the game again, I can pretty confidently state that the
biggest play of the game was not a play at all.

Oklahoma does not run a true no-huddle. It lines up quickly and, if the
defense is not prepared, runs an immediate play. If the defense is
properly aligned, then Bradford backs off center, looks to the sideline
to signal in a play, and then signals the play to his WRs.

In a true no-huddle, either several plays are called in advance when no
time can run off the clock (such as after an incomplete pass) and are
run consecutively, or the plays are called by the QB as he approaches
the line and signalled by him to his WRs as he approaches.

A true no-huddle also appears to have a wider complement of plays, the
Oklahoma offense seemed to just have a few "quick-hit" plays it would
revert to if the defense had not yet lined up.

So, the key to me was Strong recognizing this and making certain that
the defense was aware enough (and conditioned enough) to be in a proper
alignment before Oklahoma was ready to snap the ball. As a result,
Bradford was continually walking away from center. I will count the
number of times when I watch the game a third time, but I believe that
this happened almost 2/3rds of the time.

Receiving the play from the sideline and then signalling the new play to
the WRs took almost every second of the 35 second clock for Bradford,
dramatically reducing the number of plays that Oklahoma could run. I had
read that Oklahoma had been averaging 88 offensive plays, it may have
had half of that against us.

Who would have thought that the key to controlling the tempo of the game
against Oklahoma was as simple as the defense lining up quickly and
properly? None of the analysts (even after the game), but apparently our
coaches figured it out.

We were also in the nosebleed seats above the band. I was in section 402.
They were decent seats, especially with the binoculars. I was very amazed that
the Oklahoma fans didn't say ANYTHING to the Gator fans. They didn't look at
you, or if they did, they immediately looked away. It seemed like they were
very aware they were 0-4 in the last 4 BCS bowls and were afraid to say
anything. They didn't say anything after the game either. We did have one
nice older couple stop and say congratulations while we were eating at Joe's
Stone Crab on South Beach on Friday. They stopped and chatted for a few min
and were very nice. It was my only discussion with an Oklahoma fan.

I was very disappointed in the half time show. I saw the Doobie Brothers
play halftime at the Orange bowl and was wondering what kind of show we would
get. All we saw were the Gator and OK bands and then some local school
children performed a routine to some Gloria Estefan songs.

My daughter watched the game at the Odome and said that when the game ended,
they all RAN out into the streets and celebrated, she said she was in the first
few hundred out there but it ended up being about 3,000 people. She said it
was all very exciting. She also said that she was a bit worried about the
fireworks that were set off nearby. There were also flares being thrown about.
One of her friends got a small burn on her leg. She confirmed that they did
grease the light poles, but that didn't stop some from trying to climb them.
She definitely appreciates that she is a student for this National Championship.

I was informed by other Gators around me that the officiating crew was from

dead. Didn't Jeremy request those officials to never set foot on another
Florida game again? I suppose he doesn't have the clout to actually enforce
that request/demand... At any rate, I was enraged over the lack of calls when
players got injured from foul play. I was stunned. When the replay of OU's #5
"Docketting" Percy's leg showed, the whole stadium went "oooh!" The gator fans
went nuts. Isn't that the officials' first priority - to protect the players?
The officials owe an apology to Harvin and Rainey, right after #5 and the
player who appeared to horse-collar (I believe that is the term) Rainey.
Rainey was tackled on the out of bounds line, when he got injured. The manner
of the tackle was illegal. They called a later horse-collar tackle on OU, but
missed the one that hurt Rainey. Unbelievable! Did the announcers say
anything at all about it? Did I miss something?

Being at the game was FANTABULOUS, and very different from Glendale (I
needed some Tums this go around!). I had nosebleed seats, but could see
everything pretty clearly. My binoculars allowed me to see expressions on
faces when it mattered, too! (-:

The fans in general were civil to one another. I saw no fights, no taunts.
All the fans were simply rooting for their own team. The gator fans sitting
around me were all very knowledgable, cheered loudly, and were a pleasure with
whom to watch the game.

The band was below us in the lower tier, so we could not hear them. We had
to watch the gator fans along the side (we were in the end zone) to know when
to do the Gator cheers, and singing "We Are The Boys" was a challenge, to say
the least. It didn't ruin our spirit, though. What a GREAT, and HARD FOUGHT
game! I am so proud of our team!

I was disappointed with the post-game celebration. It was over so quickly,
I didn't believe it, and stuck around for a long while after they shut off the
jumbotrons (like in the movie theater after the credits roll and you are
treated with funny outtakes). The post game celebration in Glendale was much
longer and more involved. Must be the economy?

Overall I am so glad I was able to go and enjoy the moment in person. A
great time and a great memory!

Having watched the game again, I can pretty confidently state that
the biggest play of the game was not a play at all.

Oklahoma does not run a true no-huddle. It lines up quickly and, if
the defense is not prepared, runs an immediate play. If the defense

are run consecutively, or the plays are called by the QB as he
approaches the line and signalled by him to his WRs as he approaches.

A true no-huddle also appears to have a wider complement of plays,
the Oklahoma offense seemed to just have a few "quick-hit" plays it
would revert to if the defense had not yet lined up.

So, the key to me was Strong recognizing this and making certain that
the defense was aware enough (and conditioned enough) to be in a
proper alignment before Oklahoma was ready to snap the ball. As a
result, Bradford was continually walking away from center. I will
count the number of times when I watch the game a third time, but I
believe that this happened almost 2/3rds of the time.

Receiving the play from the sideline and then signalling the new play
to the WRs took almost every second of the 35 second clock for
Bradford, dramatically reducing the number of plays that Oklahoma
could run. I had read that Oklahoma had been averaging 88 offensive
plays, it may have had half of that against us.

Who would have thought that the key to controlling the tempo of the
game against Oklahoma was as simple as the defense lining up quickly
and properly? None of the analysts (even after the game), but
apparently our coaches figured it out.

This looks to be one off the weakest schedules I have seen UF have,

It is a TD the moment the ball crosses the goal line (except,
apparently, for Cleveland Gary).

What happens after it crosses the line is irrelevant.

Even if it were in the field of play, the elbow hitting the ground
while the ball is in the hand ends the play.

What happens when the hand hits the ground after the rest of the body
is down is doubly irrelevant.

Not sure why the innuendo that it may not have been a valid score,
without pointing out what the replays demonstrated.

I talked to Leon this morning and he is doing much better. He is still
looking at 14 more days of treatment, but apparently he can do it as an
outpatient, so they are releasing him today. I called the florist and
changed the address for the delivery of the flowers from the hospital to his
house.

No, I wasn't saying he was supposed to go home. I was saying I wanted to call
and see if his condition had improved enough that they were going to send him
home. When I spoke with him last, there was no release date.

He may be too tired to return the call. Would you please let us know if you
hear anything back? I assume it is a positive sign that they thought he was in
good enough shape to go home.

  Thanks again Randy.

Ok, I just wanted to let everyone who contributed to Leon's flowers know
that I just ordered the arrangement below with two Mylar "Get Well" balloons to
be delivered tomorrow. I spent as much as I could, but ended up with $3.13 left
over, so that will go into the Cookout Fund.

Thanks to everyone who contributed. I'm sure the old fart will thank you
himself when he's able. I STILL like the Ann Coulter book idea, but I couldn't
find a florist who would deliver it. ;-)
