That is a bit upscale... They are making them again, a
remake of the old charger, kinda like the new mustang

Don't worry about Preston. He has a charger... he is

Hello and welcome to GatorTalk.

*** THE GATORTALK GROUP HAS MOVED TO GOOGLE ***

We have been here on Yahoogroups since early 2000, but in the last couple of
years, mail delivery has become a problem. It would take anywhere from an
hour to a couple of days and sometimes, never, for an email to be posted.

Therefore, although the GatorTalk group on Yahoo will remain intact as a
backup, we moved to Google Groups IN January 2007. You can find us at

That's the new Charger? Yuck. Looks like it has hit middle age. Looks
like a Buick to me.

But then, what do I know about cars? I live in New York City, and ride the
subway.

However, I'll still stand by my statement that it must have cost an f$u
booster a sizable amount of money.

Lowndes All-America DB Greg Reid unplugged
By Michael Carvell | Friday, January 30, 2009, 07:55 AM

  The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Greg Reid, the AJC's player of the year, might be the nation's hottest
college football prospect.

Reid, a defensive back from Lowndes, was well known in Georgia circles but
propelled himself onto the national stage with his MVP performance in the Under
Armour All-Star game earlier this month. Reid intercepted two passes in the
ESPN-televised contest.

As a result, college scouts have staged a massive invasion of Valdosta during
the past few weeks to talk with Reid.

Reid was committed to Florida almost a year ago but backed away from the
national champion last month because he felt he rushed his decision. Now
Georgia is one of the front-runners for Reid, who also is considering Florida
State and Alabama while turning down overtures from dozens of other schools.

This weekend, Reid will take an official visit to Georgia, his last
recruiting trip before signing day. He discussed the recruiting process with
the AJC:

Q: What has the past month been like for you?

A: It's been out of control, but I've tried to stay calm and not let all the
[recruiting] get to me. I never knew it would get this bad. I figured some more
colleges would be interested in me after the Under Armour game, but never this
much. . I was just thinking that was another game. I never knew this many
people would want a 5-foot-8 cornerback.

Q: You've never been viewed as the prototype prospect because of your
less-than-spectacular size and speed, yet all these colleges want you. What
gives?

A: Any coach who knows football knows not to read too much into what a
football player does without the helmet and pads on. These combines and camps
are a little overrated. I mean, I did OK at them. But when I put on the helmet
and pads on Friday nights, it was a whole different story.

Q: When you backed off your commitment to Florida only days before the
all-star game, you took a big gamble. If you play poorly in that game, it could
have worked against you and lost you a ton of major-college offers. Why risk
it? Why not wait until after the game to see how you play before backing off?

A: What really made up my mind were the Under Armour practices. I was going
up against all these players that were rated much higher than me and had
scholarship offers from everybody in the country . and I was holding my own
against them on every play. After that, I knew I could play, and that gave me
the confidence to make the tough decision about Florida.

Q: What really went wrong with Florida?

A: Florida was my favorite team growing up, so I committed to them as soon
as I had the chance my junior year. Then I started looking closer at the depth
chart in December -- who was coming back -- and they are stacked at cornerback.
Florida has a great program, and I love the players and coaches, but it's four
years of my life, and I have to do what's best for me. There are better
opportunities for me to contribute earlier elsewhere.

Q: There were media reports that you made hand signals during the all-star
game to acknowledge your father, who is in prison. Can you elaborate?

A: My daddy is in prison in Albany and has never seen me play in a high
school game except for that one on ESPN. I was letting him know that I love
him. He has been in prison [for aggravated assault] for going on five years,
and we're hoping he can get out in time for my graduation.

Q: There has been a lot speculation about you meeting college entrance
requirements. What's your academic situation?

A: I did terrible, terrible, terrible during my first two years of high
school. Then as a junior, I started turning things around. I saw I could go
straight to college rather than a prep school if I got it together. I started
getting tutors, and my senior year has been awesome. I made all Bs first
semester. I have a 2.6 GPA. I've had a lot of college coaches and counselors
review my transcript, and they tell me that if I keep it up second semester,
then I should be fine.

Q: Your high school team was accused of having poor sportsmanship after
losing to Grayson in last season's state quarterfinals. What was your
perspective?

A: We hate to lose at Lowndes, and we didn't handle that situation very
well. . I take the blame for that. I was a senior leader, and I should have had
better control of my team. . Whatever team I play for in college, I can promise
you nothing like that will ever happen again.

Florida State junior receiver Preston Parker was

arrested Saturday morning and charged with DUI after

police found him passed out behind the wheel of his

car at a McDonald's, according to the Tallahassee

  Democrat.

An officer arrived to find a red Dodge Charger in

the drive-through lane at approximately 5 am A

wtiness told police the car had been parked there

for about 20 minutes, according to the paper.

The car's engine was running, the car was in drive

and Parker's foot was on the brake pedal, according

to a news release from the Tallahassee Police

Department. The officer woke Parker by pounding on

the window, according to the release.

Parker had only 40 catches for 372 yards and two

touchdowns in 2008 after missing the first two

  games.

Parker was arrested after taking part in a

field-sobriety test he agreed to take, police said.

His blood-alcohol content was 0.054, below the

Florida legal limit of 0.08. Police said a urine

sample was a presumptive positive for marijuana.

Police also said Parker admitted to drinking alcohol

  and smoking marijuana Friday night.

According to the Democrat, anyone convicted of

first-offense DUI in Florida, a misdemeanor, faces a

fine of up to $1,000 and up to six months in jail.

Parker was formally charged in May 2008 with a

felony count of carrying a concealed firearm and

possession of marijuana. He later pleaded guilty to

misdemeanor counts, and was suspended for the first

two games of the 2008 season.

Parker was arrested in Tallahassee in the fall of

2006 for petty theft, but the charge was dropped

after he completed a diversion program.

Parker had 40 catches for 372 yards and two

touchdowns in 2008, well below the 62 catches for

791 yards he had in his standout sophomore season.

He finished that sophomore year with 1,061 yards and

five touchdowns in total offense and was named

  Florida State's offensive MVP.

Tebow replaceable; Harvin, not so much

By Mike McCall mailto:mmcc...@alligator.org , McCallin' It
Like I See It

I know my opinion isn't a popular one, but hear me out. From a
schematic standpoint, if I was forced to choose between Percy Harvin and
Tim Tebow to play in UF's offense, I'd take Harvin.

Maybe it's because I've seen too much of Tebow and I'm
desensitized to all his clutch plays, but I think the loss of Harvin
will be harder to absorb in the Gators' game plan.

There was a time when I wouldn't hesitate to choose Tebow in
this discussion, but as he becomes more and more aware of how his style
of play will have to change before he hits the NFL, the things that make
him so dangerous are tempered a little

When Tebow is running all over the field, he causes all kinds of
trouble for a defense. Once in high school, I saw a team tell its
defensive lineman not to cross the line of scrimmage or try to pressure
Tebow. They just stood up, fanned out and shuffled their feet in an
attempt to keep him from running. Naturally, that trick failed.

As Tebow stays in the pocket more, he stops being Tebow and
starts being just a really, really good quarterback, and defenses don't
have to allocate as much manpower to babysit him.

I don't see any reason why John Brantley wouldn't be able to
succeed in an offense where he has a full complement of playmakers and
needs to make around 15 throws per game.

Meanwhile, Harvin demands tons of attention. He's always in
motion and moving around, and it leaves defenses uneasy. His mere
presence on the field gives other receivers single coverage and opens up
running lanes for Jeff Demps and Chris Rainey.

So not only is Harvin a threat to score on every touch, but he
gives another two or three guys that same ability just by being there.
Demps Co. didn't look quite the same against Alabama without Harvin
around.

Tebow and Harvin are both incredible players, but Harvin makes
more plays that I don't think anyone else could make. Neither can be
replaced, but I think another quarterback could function in the offense
better than another receiver/running back could fill Harvin's role.

Obviously, this discussion is strictly X's and O's, because if
leadership or charisma were factored in, Tebow is more important to UF
than Harvin or even coach Urban Meyer.

I understand if you don't agree. But at the very least, take
into account how important Harvin was to the Gators, and consider the
impact his departure will have before you expect the 2009 UF squad to be
the best in college football history.

[gatortalk] [Gainesville SUN]: NFL's biggest spectacle always worth watching (Dooley)

2009-02-01 Thread Shane Ford
NFL's biggest spectacle always worth watching

By Pat Dooley
Gainesville Sun Columnist

Published: Saturday, January 31, 2009 at 6:01 a.m.
Last Modified: Sunday, February 1, 2009 at 12:37 a.m.

One day I may write a book about being a sports fan and call it Everything I
Know About the NFL I Learned on a Treadmill. Because the only time I watch
those NFL guys talk breathlessly about zone blitzes and salary caps is during
workouts.

I find the pregame shows boring, the personalities stale and, like many of you,
I much prefer the college game.

But this week is different. This week you have to watch. A little. If you
watched all of the Super Bowl discussions this week you'll need rehab Monday.

Today, it all ends, thank goodness. We don't have to hear from former players
turned TV guys. We don't have to listen to national sports talk radio hosts
forget why we listen to them in the first place and instead spend mindless
hours interviewing players not in the game. We don't have to watch Chris
Berman's comb-over dancing in the Tampa wind.

I know. Turn it off if it's so bad. But it's intoxicating because it leads up
to the biggest event in sports. You don't have to love pro football to watch
it. You don't even have to like football.

But you'll watch. You always do.

Maybe this year you're not so sure. Pittsburgh-Arizona isn't doing it for you.
The hype has numbed you. You're thinking about turning in early or going to a
movie. So let me tell you why you should watch.

It's historic. It's the first time the Cardinals have been in the Super Bowl,
leaving Detroit, Houston, New Orleans, Cleveland and your Jacksonville Jaguars
as the only NFL franchises not to play in one. Arizona being there is kind of
like Vanderbilt playing in a BCS bowl game.

It's almost historic. If Pittsburgh wins, it will be the second time in three
years a black head coach has won. Mike Tomlin can't be the first, but I'm
guessing he won't complain.

Bruce Springsteen at halftime. First, Paul McCartney, then the Stones. Last
year Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The NFL must have access to my iPod. If
Weezer, Ben Folds or Sister Hazel plays next year's halftime, I'll know it for
sure.

It's a good excuse to go to a party on a Sunday.

Arizona's Anquan Boldin may blow up on the sidelines again.

Troy Polamalu. The hair, the big hits, the big plays. He's really fun to watch.

You can explain Roman numerals to your kids. And maybe to some of the adults.

Pittsburgh can set a record for Super Bowl wins with six. That means the Dallas
Cowboys won't be tied for the record anymore. Woo-hoo.

The commercials. Not as good as they used to be, but there are usually two or
three that will induce more laughter than a whole season of Cavemen.

Al Michaels may be full of himself and John Madden isn't as good as Frank
Caliendo doing John Madden, but they are still the best announcing team on TV.

Ben Roethlisberger has sore ribs. And you can't spell Roethlisberger without
R-I-B-S.

Larry Fitzgerald is the best wide receiver in football.

Max Starks, one of the best Gators I've ever interviewed, is playing.

It's a break from recruiting.

ESPN is showing poker from Europe. I'm not kidding.

It's in our state, just like the college football championship was earlier this
year. We rock.

You can see if Dr. Football misses another one. I'm picking Pittsburgh, 27-14.

This is it. This is the last football game of the season. The Pro Bowl doesn't
count because it's not real football. So this is it.

It's the Super Bowl. It's a part of our culture. I think there is a law that
says you have to watch it. If there isn't, I'm sure one will be enacted in the
next four years.

That's the new Charger? Yuck. Looks like it has hit middle age. Looks like
a Buick to me.

But then, what do I know about cars? I live in New York City, and ride the
subway.

However, I'll still stand by my statement that it must have cost an f$u
booster a sizable amount of money.

My big surprise from this story is that the guy was driving a Dodge

at F$U would be driving something much more upscale than that.

All together now... AW. ok, ok, I DO feel a LITTLE
compassion for him.

I was told that I did the same thing at a donut shop on Beach Blvd (Jax
Beach) around 2:00AM in '73. That was before drive thru's, however, and I was
just sitting in the middle of the parking lot. My car had a stick shift and my
foot had slipped off the clutch allowing the car to lurch forward and die. I
was out cold and the employees parked my car and put me in the back seat. I
woke up about 10:00 the next morning with a bag of donuts on my chest. Freaks!
Ah, those were the good days...

Must have been the medicine I was taking for an illness. Yeah, that's it. I
was sick! ;-)

Florida State junior receiver Preston Parker was arrested Saturday
morning and charged with DUI after police found him passed out behind the wheel
of his car at a McDonald's, according to the Tallahassee Democrat.

An officer arrived to find a red Dodge Charger in the drive-through lane
at approximately 5 a.m. A wtiness told police the car had been parked there for
about 20 minutes, according to the paper.

The car's engine was running, the car was in drive and Parker's foot was
on the brake pedal, according to a news release from the Tallahassee Police
Department. The officer woke Parker by pounding on the window, according to the
release.

yards and two touchdowns in 2008 after missing the first two games.

Parker was arrested after taking part in a field-sobriety test he agreed
to take, police said.

His blood-alcohol content was 0.054, below the Florida legal limit of
0.08. Police said a urine sample was a presumptive positive for marijuana.
Police also said Parker admitted to drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana
Friday night.

According to the Democrat, anyone convicted of first-offense DUI in
Florida, a misdemeanor, faces a fine of up to $1,000 and up to six months in
jail.

Parker was formally charged in May 2008 with a felony count of carrying a
concealed firearm and possession of marijuana. He later pleaded guilty to
misdemeanor counts, and was suspended for the first two games of the 2008
season.

Parker was arrested in Tallahassee in the fall of 2006 for petty theft,
but the charge was dropped after he completed a diversion program.

Parker had 40 catches for 372 yards and two touchdowns in 2008, well

I am also not sorry to see Anquan Boldin on the losing end.

IIRC, SOS was recruiting him hard. He had been a QB in high school, and we
were recruiting him as a QB. However, the f$u people kept telling him that SOS
would never play him as a QB, and would switch him to wide receiver.

He signed with f$u, and even before he took a single rep in practice, they
switched him to WR.

Idiot. Two weeks ago, when I saw him jawing with the Cardinal Offensive
Coordinator, I thought we were lucky not to get him. Typical f$u trash.
