[gatortalk] Re: FW: [gatornews] [SUN]: Rainy reception for softball

2009-06-04 Thread A. Leon Polhill
I know what you mean. Our daughter, Diane, played varsity soccer for
Lincoln High School in Tallahassee and I could never stand watching her team
cry whenever they lost, so I turned off the TV as soon as the last strike
was called in the Gator softball game. I knew what was coming.

It's my problem.

I love the way women celebrate with each other when they win, but the crying
gets to me. Come to think of it, they cry when they win, too.

It was a rainy reception for the University of Florida softball team this
afternoon at Katie Seashole Pressly Softball Stadium.

The Florida softball team's magical season ended two wins short of a
national championship Tuesday night with the 3-2 loss to Washington in the
Women's College World Series title round in Oklahoma City, Okla.

The 2009 team (63-5) set 39 records during its first-ever run to the WCWS
championship series.

Senior pitcher Stacey Nelson ended her career with 136 wins, which is sixth
in NCAA record books, second in Southeastern Conference history and first in
the Florida books. Her 1,116 career strikeouts ranked fourth in SEC history
and first at UF.

Florida ended the season with a .323 batting average, a .543 slugging
percentage and .423 on-base percentage, all bests in UF history. Three
Gators recorded eight single-season records, including runs (69, Aja
Paculba), home runs (18, Francesca Enea) and slugging percentage (.713,
Kelsey Bruder).

The senior class set 17 individual career records in its four years.

I don't think that Ole Miss will be bad - but I doubt they will be that
great either. Last year - they were flying under the radar and people did
not take them seriously. This year they will be taken seriously.

Would be surprised if a team other than Florida is ranked No. 1 in The
Associated Press preseason college football poll due out in mid-August.

Most preseason magazines worth a darn have the Gators No. 1.

The Sporting News preseason annual, always a keeper, has UF at No. 1,
followed by Texas, Oklahoma, Southern Cal, Ole Miss, Virginia Tech, Oregon,
LSU, Ohio State and Oklahoma State.

Athlon's college football Web site has its own countdown, with its preseason
top pick due out Thursday. Guess who No. 1 is?

Athlon's list from No. 2 to No. 10: Oklahoma, Texas, USC, Ohio State,
Alabama, Penn State, Virginia Tech, Oklahoma State and Ole Miss.

I wonder how QBs sleep at night knowing that Spikes is 258 pounds, Dunlap is 290, Jaye Howard is 296 - and these defensive freaks run faster than they do !!!

I'll bet every RB has seen - or been told about - the monster hit Spikes put on NoShow Moreno last year in the FLA-GA game.  Planted him on his back - in the backfield !!!

I'm ready to go play Tennessee right now

John Brown is just more motivation for this year and next year ...
