Now why would this guy want to leave Arkansas for Florida after all these

head coach. It just doesn't make sense.

The jumpers he's worked with could compile a Who's Who list of collegiate

Booth has also coached pole vaulter Mark Klee and shot put-discus standouts

Hollis Conway and Neil Guidry.

It was Paula and my 25th anniversary trip. It was a memorable one. On our
anniversary we hiked to Abrahms Falls in Cades Cove. About a mile into the
trail we encountered a large male bear who entered the trail and began to
walk toward us about 40 yards ahead. I blew my whistle and he headed down
into Abrahms Creek and disappeared like a good bear into the woods. How did
that song go? 'Don't go into the woods today, you'd be in for a big
surprise.' Just before reaching the falls I fell off the trail and held
onto a small rhododendron bush until Paula could pull me up and save my
life. This has become one of her new roles, lately. Anyway, we had lunch
at the falls and then drove into Gatlinburg for a dinner of steak and
mountain trout at the Black Bear Grill overlooking a stream. We both signed
up for 25 more.

[gatortalk] Re: 2009 Helmet Schedule

2009-07-15 Thread A. Leon Polhill
Thanks, Randoo! Why do I always start looking for my tournament darts when
I first see this every summer? Does anyone else think it would make a great
dart game?

Sorry I disappeared from posting without a word for about 3 weeks, but Paula
and I were up in the NC/Tennessee mountains with the Gator motorhome.saw a
lot of bears and Vols. Only the bears were scary, though. The Vols all
bowed and scrapped appropriately.

Randy missed my posting so much he thought I had tried to die again and gave
a call yesterday, which was VERY thoughtful of him. Naturally, I said, "Not
yet, Randy!" He and I are both the sensitive types. Any guy with a photo
of Dr. Phil on his Facebook page HAS to be sensitive, you know.

Anyway, Paula and I had a great time and I'm much stronger as a result of
all the up and down hiking. This will interest Oliver: we hiked over 24
miles of mountain trails while we were up there. The last one, last
Thursday, was an 8-miler with an altitude gain of over 2,000 feet to watch
water pour over Ramsey Cascades in the Greenbrier section of the Smokys.
AWESOME, baby!

Anyway, we camped at Julian Price Memorial Park on the Blue Ridge Parkway at
3,400 feet near Blowing Rock, NC the first week; then, Elkmont at about
2,000 feet in the Smokys near Gatlinburg. We ran into a lot of Gators in
both places. Of course, Elkmont was overflowing with adoring Vols. I, of
course, had out all my Gator flags, windsocks, lawn ornaments, chairs, hats,
shirts and my Gator cell phone ring tone. One Vol even said, "That was a
neat ring tone. It sounds familiar; what is it?" I was happy to tell him
that it was the UF Alma Mater and asked if he would like to hear it again.

It's good to be back. If I didn't have about 200 emails to go through I
hunt the darts.

Does anyone know how to place bets in Las Vegas or somewhere? I want to put a
substantional bet on how Bowden dies. I want to bet that he is struck down and
killed - any day now - by lightning.

Bowden is the biggest lying, cheating, back stabbing SOB coach in this country!

And its all about him - and he places himself above the team

How do we know that Bowden really is still alive? Has anyone measured his body
temperature or taken a blood pressure reading on him? I think he's dead and
they just keep wheeling him around.

FSU's Bowden: Still hopes to have 14 wins restored

By JOHN ZENOR AP Sports Writer

Florida State coach Bobby Bowden isn't ready to give back those wins the NCAA
wants to remove from his record due to an academic cheating scandal.

The 79-year-old Seminoles Bowden said Tuesday he still hopes the NCAA-vacated
wins will be restored after a university appeal, keeping his race with Penn
State's Joe Paterno going.

Paterno's 383 wins is currently one more than Bowden.

"Of course, I'm hoping to win that appeal. I've been coaching 55 years and I
never have been involved in cheating," said Bowden, seated next to his three
coaching sons at the University of North Alabama. "Here I've done nothing and
I'm going to lose 14 ball games. It doesn't seem right, but it could happen.
And I won't cut my wrists if that doesn't happen. There are more important
things in life.

"But I do hope that they rethink that like they did with Oklahoma and Georgia
Tech (in recent years), where they first said they were going to take away wins
and they changed their minds."

The NCAA said 61 Seminole athletes cheated on an online test in a music history
course from the fall of 2006 through summer 2007 or received improper help from
staffers who provided them with answers to the exam and typed papers for them.

The university has appealed, arguing that stripping the school, its coaches and
athletes of victories in several sports is too harsh.

Bowden spoke about the prospect of losing the wins during "A Day With the
Bowdens" Tuesday at North Alabama, where son Terry is approaching his first
season as football coach. Terry, Tommy and UNA associate head coach Jeff Bowden
hosted a prayer breakfast and seminars with teenagers and adults.

The NCAA vacating 14 Bowden wins is not the way Paterno wants the chase for the
winningest coach status to end.

"The NCAA is going to do what it's going to do, but I would hope they would not
take away 10 or 12 wins away from him," Paterno told the Reading Eagle in
Pennsylvania. "I don't think that's fair. He coached the team he had; they
played against people, and they won. They ought to be wins for them."

Asked about the comments, Bowden said: "That doesn't surprise me. I would say
the same thing if it was facing him. I hope that doesn't happen because there
will always be an asterisk out there.

"He's in the lead right now," he added. "Of course if you vacate those 14 wins,
that thing is over."

Tommy Bowden, who is out of coaching after his midseason resignation at
Clemson, said his father doesn't discuss the wins record at family functions,
but only when the media brings it up.

Terry badly wants those family bragging rights.

"I think it's important to everybody that played for Bobby Bowden or Joe
Paterno," said Terry, who hasn't coached since his abrupt departure from Auburn
six games into the 1998 season. "I want to bounce my grandkids on my knee and
talk about Bobby Bowden and not Joe Paterno as the winningest coach ever. I
think it has value to a lot of people in a lot of ways."

Bobby Bowden is approaching his 34th season with the Seminoles, with offensive
coordinator and head coach-in- Jimbo Fisher designated as successor.

With birthday No. 80 approaching in August, he isn't letting himself be pinned
down on a retirement date.

"I'm not going to coach until I'm 85," he said. "I'm just not going to do that.
It's a year to year thing. People ask me, 'How long do you want to coach?' I
hope I don't ever have to say it because people start counting the days.

"My days are numbered. I know about when it's going to be, but I won't say it."

He and Paterno spent time together during a Nike-sponsored trip to Puerto Rico
in the spring with other coaches. The win thing doesn't come up, Bowden said.

I will try not to stray into THFGT territory, but I will say that there are
a number of fronts on which this trip can be criticized, the most obvious
one being the cost of flying him to Indonesia. Something tells me ol'
Bernie isn't flying Economy class.

And Bernie wants a lot more students from Indonesia to attend UF. For our
sake, I hope they are not of the jihadi variety. Let's just make sure they
don't want to take flying lessons (no need to learn how to land).

Goal is to strengthen student exchanges and partnerships.

University of Florida President Bernie Machen is heading to Indonesia for a
weeklong trip at the end of the month.

The East-West Center, a nonprofit dedicated to strengthening U.S. relations
with Asian and Pacific nations, is one of three groups coordinating the
trip. The trip is meant to increase student exchanges and research
partnerships with Indonesia, said Terry Bigalke, the center's director of
education.

"By having these kinds of exchanges ... you hope to build a stronger
relationship and a much better understanding between the countries," he
said.

Educational leaders will be participating from about 20 colleges and
universities, Bigalke said, including UF, Cornell University, Miami Dade
College and Ohio State University.

Bigalke said UF is responsible for paying Machen's airfare and the
Indonesian government is picking up the costs of local travel, room and
board.

In an e-mail, Machen said he hopes the trip will increase the number of
Indonesian students at UF and faculty interactions there. The university now
has five Indonesian students, according to the UF International Center.

Machen took a similar trip to Iran last year. He said the trip will be the
third of this type that he's taken and the fifth country visited.

"All are based on the presumption that the U.S. benefits with educational
exchanges and interactions," he said. "I have not been to Indonesia and am
very much looking forward to seeing and learning more about it."

Indonesia has the world's largest Muslim population and the fourth-largest
overall population. Bigalke said Indonesia is also an example of a country
that has successfully made the transition from an authoritarian government
to a democracy.

The trip, which will take place from July 26 to Aug. 1, is also being
coordinated by the United States-Indonesia Society and Institute for
International Education. Participants will be visiting higher education
institutions in the Indonesian cities of Jakarta, Bogor, Bandung and
Yogyakarta.
