EitherChris has NOT been in the sports writing business very long (naive) or he has and is saying this just to piss us off. If the Gators switched conferences with USC - the Gators would win the conference every year. If the Gators went to the ACC or Big Ten - the Gators would win the conference every year. But the Gators play in the toughest conference - the SEC - were they are the favorites to win the SEC - but most any team is talented enough to trip them up (see Old Miss last year). And who was the best conference last year? http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/fbc08.htm?loc=interstitialskip and which conference was below the ACC ? (how embarassing for the PAC10) Who's schedule was ranked #4 last year and who's schedule was ranked #16? http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/fbt08.htm so Chris - the facts do NOT back you up. EitherChris has no clue whatheis talking about ORhe does andis just trying to piss us off. Wait until the season is over and then check the conference and team rankings. Still, Foley has no problem declaring he has no intention of seeking a home-and-home series that would forfeit a seventh home game and the estimated $2 million in revenue he uses to fund one of the nation's finest overall athletic programs."Other schools have made the decision to do that," Foley said. "We won't."And there are those, clearly, that just want to pad the slate.Like Mississippi. The Rebels are favored to reach Atlanta and play in the SEC title game for the first time, but their toughest non-conference foe is Memphis on the road. This debate rages about the same time every year. It is fueled by sportswriters' desire to remain relevant in the 2-3 weeks before the season starts. Since this the second inflammatory article out of the Sentinel this summer (remember they were the ones who reported the ever relevant arrest record of Meyer's players) they must be in real trouble down there. I just hope they can sell a few papers off this so that when the season starts they'll still be around. But, new season, same gripe. If anyone would like to give Jeremy Foley a way to make up the $2million+ loss the program would suffer in scheduling a home and away game with USC then have at it. I'm sure he'd listen. In the mean time, as Ken says, I'd like to see USC fight it out in the SEC from year to year. Pete Carrol can't even beat Oregon State consistently. Because that PAC 10 is so tough? Hardly. Even with the cream puffs we play in a tougher conference than anyone else in the country. And, we have f$U every year. Could that be why we held the most potent offense in the country to 14 points in the NC game last year? Hmm. [gatortalk] RE: [gatornews] [OrlSentinel] The sack master: Florida DE Carlos Dunlap's impressive stats should catch eyes
The goods news is that the defensive tackles should be much improved this year - which means offensive linemen can't just always double team Dunlap and not worry about the defensive tackles. Plus we have a lot more depth on the defensive line - so these guys have no excuse not to run like the wind on every play - including the fourth quarter - when Alabama and Oklahoma ran out of gas. Third - hopefully Cunningham on the other side has improved also. If you worry too much about Dunlap - that frees up the other DE, or a LB or strong safety on the other side !!! Which means - we rip the QBs arms and legs off and beat him to death with them. And then shove them up Kiffins [edited because this is a family message board] to give him something new to yap about. His imposing 6-foot-6 figure makes the Gators' former "Freak," Jevon Kearse, look like a Catholic school linebacker. His go-go-gadget arms produced 9.5 sacks and a Bowl Championship Series title game defensive MVP award last season.Teammates Tim Tebow and Brandon Spikes get most of the publicity, but Dunlap might find the most love from the NFL draft as a major threat to leave school early.Rob Rang, director of NFLdraftscout.com, said Dunlap has the potential of a top-10 pick. Ole Miss' Greg Hardy and Northwestern's Corey Wootton are ahead of Dunlap as defensive end prospects, Rang said, but that's partly because those two seniors have a larger body of work."He's got many qualities NFL teams want from an end," Rang said. "He possesses a unique combination of size and the ability to chase down backs 5-10 yards downfield. If he shows he can handle the double teams he'll see this year, expect him to get a lot of attention."And if he puts together a perfect season, he might break Florida's single-season sack record of 13 set by Alex Brown in 1999."Of course I want to try to go for that," Dunlap said. "After last year, they are going to be keying in on me."This sack master relies on five factors for an efficient pass rush. 1. ArmsDunlap has a wingspan of more than 7 feet, enabling him to pluck quarterbacks from the air mid-stride and keep offensive tackles at a distance without getting pushed off the ball.Gators offensive guard Mike Pouncey knows this firsthand every time he goes against Dunlap in practice."He's so long — long and powerful," Pouncey said. "He's just a great pass rusher, the best one on our team at it."Linemen will try to jam Dunlap this season, so he must use his arms as leverage to get free. 2. StrengthDunlap's strength is more organic than manufactured, neither chiseled nor sloppy.Just massive."He could pick up a car that's overturned," Gators strength coach Mickey Marotti said. "If he's mad enough."On a sack on Arkansas' Casey Dick last year, Dunlap moved a double team three yards backward before turning right to chase down his prey.Marotti said Dunlap rivals defensive tackle Troy Epps for the most pure strength on the team, but he needs to work on his definition. 3. Anger/speedWhen Dunlap smells a sack, he "zones out" from the crowd and hears nothing but the quarterback's footsteps, he said. He's looking to make the kind of game-changing hit that will fluster an offense.Teammates say Dunlap is at his best when provoked or highly motivated — or even a little on edge."It's like he has a button on and off," defensive tackle Jaye Howard said. "When he wants to go, it's over. No one can stop him. And he's been going all summer."Rang said Dunlap appears fast for his size and wouldn't be surprised if he ran the 40-yard dash in the 4.7-second range or below. Howard says Dunlap runs about a 4.5. Dunlap will need his speed to avoid double teams and rehearse his post-sack routine."The first thing you do after you hit him is you're looking down at him," Dunlap said. "Just breathe out." 4. Football intelligenceSacking isn't just instinctual for Dunlap, who studies ways to create mismatches.Dunlap lines up at different spots on the line, depending on the defensive package, and every play requires at least a two-step thought process."If I make a spin move, I want to have a counter move for it," Dunlap said. "So I can set up the

Over the last 3 years, Florida has an average SOS of 5 vs. USC's 15.6. Over the last 10 years, UF's SOS is 19 vs. USC's 15.2 The point shouldn't be we have a weaker schedule, the point is these are two powerhouse teams that year in and year out play very tough schedules and still win. Florida can do it by playing in the SEC and USC does it by scheduling teams from other conferences. These SOS stats are all from Sagarin and he seems to always have a bit of a Pac10 and Big Televen bias, but I still think he is probably the most unbiased ranking. Our risk with scheduling cupcakes out of conference is that when the SEC is down, our SOS goes way down.
