WOW.I guess that's why their entrance exam does not have a lot of words - just areas between lines that they give you crayons for. And they have a lot of good looking women. Who can be bothered with real academics nowadays?

Yes, we had Thanksgiving Lunch as I recall, then all went to the Gator Bowl.
All my parents, aunts and uncles graduated from AJSHS. It was a dress-up
game with girls/women wearing corsages on gowns and dresses and men sporting
boutonnieres on their suit coats. All decorations of cars were hand-made
using crepe paper and paints. It is a great memory.

Do you remember when our high school teams used to play each other in the

remember. It seemed like all of Jacksonville planned their Thanksgiving
Dinner around that Football game. (You went to Jackson as I remember.)

Planning for the fall football season in the South is radically different
than up North.
For those who are planning a football trip South, here are some helpful
hints.

Women's Accessories:
NORTH: Chap Stick in back pocket and a $20 bill in the front pocket.
SOUTH: Louis Vuitton duffel with two lipsticks, waterproof mascara, and a
fifth of bourbon. Money not necessary - that's what dates are for.

Stadium Size:
NORTH: College football stadiums hold 20,000 people.
SOUTH: High school football stadiums hold 20,000 people.

Fathers:
NORTH: Expect their daughters to understand Sylvia Plath.
SOUTH: Expect their daughters to understand pass interference.

Campus Decor:
NORTH: Statues of founding fathers.
SOUTH: Statues of Heisman trophy winners.

Homecoming Queen:
NORTH: Also a physics major.
SOUTH: Also Miss America ..

Heroes:
NORTH: Rudy Giuliani
SOUTH: Archie, Peyton Eli Manning

Getting Tickets:
NORTH: 5 days before the game you walk into the ticket office on campus.
SOUTH: 5 months before the game you walk into the ticket office on campus,
make a large financial contribution and put name on a waiting list for
tickets.

Friday Classes After a Thursday Night Game:
NORTH: Students and teachers not sure they're going to the game, because
they have classes on Friday.
SOUTH: Teachers cancel Friday classes because they don't want to see the few
hung over students that might actually make it to class.

Parking:
NORTH: An hour before game time, the University opens the campus for game
parking.
SOUTH: RVs sporting their school flags begin arriving on Wednesday for the
weekend festivities. The really faithful arrive on Tuesday.

Game Day:
NORTH: A few students party in the dorm and watch ESPN on TV.
SOUTH: Every student wakes up, has a beer for breakfast, and rushes over to
where ESPN is broadcasting Game Day Live to get on camera and wave to the
idiots up north who wonder why Game Day Live is never Broadcast from their
campus.

Tailgating:
NORTH: Raw meat on a grill, beer with lime in it, listening to local radio
station with truck tailgate down.
SOUTH: 30-foot custom pig-shaped smoker fires up at dawn. Cooking
accompanied by live performance from the Dave Matthews Band, who come over
during breaks and ask for a hit off bottle of bourbon.

Getting to the Stadium:
NORTH: You ask Where's the stadium? When you find it, you walk right in.
SOUTH: When you're near it, you'll hear it. On game day it is the state's
third largest city.

Concessions:
NORTH: Drinks served in a paper cup, filled to the top with soda.
SOUTH: Drinks served in a plastic cup, with the home team's mascot on it,
filled less than half way with soda, to ensure enough room for bourbon.

When National Anthem is Played:
NORTH : Stands are less than half full, and less than half of them stand up.
SOUTH: 100,000 fans, all standing, sing along in perfect four-part harmony.

The Smell in the Air After the First Score:
NORTH: Nothing changes.
SOUTH: Fireworks, with a touch of bourbon.

Commentary (Male):
NORTH: Nice play.

Dang. When I was at UF - pre engineering - all math, science, chemistry, etc
classes were weed out classes.

I think there were three chemisty classes plus a test to even get into the
first chemistry class. I think it was like 2,000 applied to start chemistry
and only 200 finished.

I think one of the bad chemistry teachers was Dressner. There use to be stop
signs around campus where below the word stop was Dressner

I hear that now classes are much easier and they try to pass students through
instead of flunking them out.

A new study finds that more than a third of students who enroll in introductory
math classes at state universities do not pass, although the University of
Florida is an exception to the trend.

About 37 percent of state university students fail or withdraw from
“gatekeeper” math classes such as college algebra and trigonometry, according
to the http://enlacefl.usf.edu/enlaceblog/p4/index.html study by ENLACE
Florida. Students at Florida Gulf Coast and Florida International universities
were more likely not to pass than succeed in those two particular classes, the
study showed.

UF, on the other hand, had passage rates ranging from 77 percent in
pre-calculus algebra to 96 percent in math for liberal arts II, the latter rate
being best in the state. UF also had the top passage rates among state
universities for college algebra (84 percent), pre-calculus (82 percent) and
math for liberal arts I (85 percent).

UF’s selectivity and the higher income level of its students as compared to
other state universities could be responsible for the higher rates, said Paul
Dosal, executive director of ENLACE Florida. He called on university math
departments to do a better job, even at UF.

“I don’t know if I would ever rest on my laurels, because we could always do
better,” he said.

ENLACE Florida has posted a
http://enlacefl.usf.edu/Gatekeeper%20Courses%20Data%20for%20Publication.xls
database on its Web site showing the data, which comes from the 2007-08
academic year, broken down by individual classes and universities.

UPDATE: I spoke with UF Provost Joe Glover, who said the failure of students to
pass could be due to a lack of preparation in high schools or students having
difficulty adjusting to the workload of college. He said even UF, which has
“some of the best prepared students in Florida,” has room for improvement.

2009-10-16 Thread Jerry Belloit
Sean and other Great Gators,

I feel your pain! More and more I see my friends' names in the obituaries.
In 1996, I was afraid that I would join them when I was diagnosed with
cancer and it had spread to my lymph nodes. Before then, death was never a
reality for me. While I knew intellectually that I would not live forever,
I don't think I really believed it. It is amazing how one little word can
change your world and your perspective. I am proud to be an almost 14 year
survivor, but I have learned to relish every day of the remaining days I am
blessed to live. I confess that I am still somewhat unnerved every time I
lose another friend, however.

Jerry

I don't know if its me getting older, but I'm seeing more and more of these
and they're getting harder to cope with. Gus was the first I think, but they
don't get any better. Really sucks... : (

To Whom It May Concern:

My husband, Derek Konczal, koncz...@yahoo.com, has passed away. I still go
through his email to make sure nothing of importance comes through his
account.

Please unsubscribe him from your service. I love the Gators, but the
numerous emails make it difficult to cull through his account.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Pamela Konczal
