Re: [gatortalk] Some Observations

One additional point: perhaps Brantley is a little TOO low key. Maybe he
should have gotten in some people's faces this afternoon (such as his center).

I understand there are different styles of leadership, and what works for one
person won't necessarily work for another. However, this is football, and
sometimes you can't afford to be too subtle. By calling some players out,
Brantley could have signaled that he is the leader on offense, and everyone is
accountable.

We'll see if anything changes over the next seven days.

I also hope you are right, Leon, as this would account for the play-calling.
However, it wouldn't account for the absolutely horrible execution.

The Keystone Kops? The Gang that Couldn't Shoot Straight? Whatever you want
to call us, it was ugly and embarrassing today.

As you and others have written, I think we will improve. The question is: will
we improve enough? We will be facing much, much tougher teams in the weeks
ahead. This could be a long and painful season. Let's hope we see a
fundamentally improved team, starting next week.

Today was the first game I had been to in twenty years. Many thanks to Leon
and Paula for their wonderful hospitality. We really enjoyed the Gator Booster
pre-game and the festivity outside. Thanks also to Mary for getting me tickets.

Here are a few of my thoughts on the game.

  1. It was really hot! After twenty years, I forgot just how hot it could
be. Leon probably saved me. He took us by a place that was handing out towels
for the game. He also recommended that I keep a cup from the Booster luncheon.
With the combination of the two, I could keep myself hydrated and I could keep
the towel wet. The towel provided much needed cooling.

  2. There were quite a few empty seats, but the "official attendance was over
90,000.

  3. Now to the game. The defense did well. We have some pretty good players
on defense and they played like a team. Miami should not have had near as many
possessions and consequently near as much yards.

  4. I don't know how bad the offense looked on TV, but at the stadium, they
looked really bad. There seemed to be a problem with Pouncey moving while he
was snapping the ball. This caused several misplays.

  5. Brantley has a lot of work to do. He overthrew several times, missed a
couple of snaps where it was not Pouncey's fault.

  6. Moore needs to get focused. He had opportunities but missed them.

  7. Rainey had a bad day in my opinion. He did some things well like getting
the tipped ball for a touchdown, but he also did not run like we were
expecting. He seems to lack the toughness he had as a freshman. He went down
too easily.

  8. One bright spot for the offense, Mike G. did a good job running the ball
both on kickoffs and regular runs. I think he had one fumble, however.

  9. Demps had a nice touchdown run but generally also went down way too
easily.

Clearly we need to improve significantly before we play even Tennessee. I
don't know what was the matter with the offense, but they just did not play as
a unit and did not dominate the game like I had anticipated. I expect big
improvement next week. Without it we could lose several games this year.

Don't know that I can blame Drayton. Gillislee had a fumble where the guy
did an excellent job of stripping the ball. I am shocked but glad that they
put Gillislee right back in. I guess Moody dropped a pitch. I think the
screwed up exchange between Brantley and Moody - don't know if you can blame
Drayton. Most of the fumbles were bad snaps. We shall see as the season
goes on. But you are correct - we did hire Drayton's replacement because he
was some specialist about holding on to the ball.

<< Deonte Thompson looked like he dropped that TD pass early>>

I was thinking - here we go again ... same way he started last year ...

<< I like what Omarius Hines brings to the table>>

Agreed. I would ask Hines which WR position he wants to play - and put him
there. The other WRs can fight for a position. Hines is the only WR that
  wants to play.

I would start Gillislee over Demps and Moody.

Moody did nothing. He's suppose to be healthy, this is his money year - and
  he played like that?

Demps kept getting arm tackled. The one long run Demps had - I don't think
anyone touched him. Demps is great running track. Not so great when they
  can hit him.

Gillislee ran like a RB possessed. That is what I expect out of Demps and
Moody - but didn't see it.

I would give Rainey a pass today and not be too critical. Perhaps Hines
would be better for the slot? But then we obviously don't have a $#%$ TE
  !!!

Once the defense settled down - they played great. I guess they had one
series in the second half where they lost focus. If it were not for a great
defense - we might have lost to Miami of Ohio !

I thought considering the snaps being dribbled back to him - Brantley did
very well. I think at the half he was 9 of 11 and of the two incompletions
  - one was the drop by Thompson and the other was a drop by Moore? Hits them
in the hands and they drop it.

Burton looked good - but I would have rather seen him focusing on - and
taking snaps at QB (real stuff - not just goal line) for when Brantley gets
  hurt.

I can see now why they closed practice. 26 yards in 3 quarters? That is
  shameful.

What happened to our kicking? We are suppose to have incredible punter and
place kicker. IN fact, all the special teams - did not look special.

The only bright spot was our defense - but again - it was Miami of Ohio -
which was the about the worst offense in division one last year.

Definitely not the best game I've ever seen the Gators play.

I can't explain why the snaps from center were so bad, but as far as the OL
performance overall, I saw a lot of names I didn't expect to see.

My thoughts exactly about Pouncey...even the announcers said he was playing
like a guard instead of a center. His mind is not in the right position.

<< I can't explain why the snaps from center were so bad>>

Mr Pouncey can forget about copying his brother (moving from guard to
center) to go in the first round of the draft. Move Pouncey back to guard
and put Robey in at center.

<< Maybe some of the starters got injured, and that's why there was no
push

from the OL>>

Our OL is suppose to be the strength of our team. Our third string should
have been able to push Miami of Ohio around. IN a game like today - we
should have seen some HUGE holes opened up. I didn't see that. There is
no

excuse for their performance today.

<< Rainey is no Harvin>>

Agreed. I thought that getting Rainey and Demps out in space would be an
excellent thing. They proved me wrong today. They did not break a single
tackle. Think that is the difference between Harvin and Rainey/Demps -
Harvin could break some tackles.

<< Drayton = fumbles>>

Don't know that I can blame Drayton. Gillislee had a fumble where the guy
did an excellent job of stripping the ball. I am shocked but glad that
they

put Gillislee right back in. I guess Moody dropped a pitch. I think the
screwed up exchange between Brantley and Moody - don't know if you can
blame

Drayton. Most of the fumbles were bad snaps. We shall see as the season
goes on. But you are correct - we did hire Drayton's replacement because
he

was some specialist about holding on to the ball.

<< Deonte Thompson looked like he dropped that TD pass early>>

I was thinking - here we go again ... same way he started last year ...

<< I like what Omarius Hines brings to the table>>

Agreed. I would ask Hines which WR position he wants to play - and put
him

there. The other WRs can fight for a position. Hines is the only WR that
wants to play.

I would start Gillislee over Demps and Moody.

Moody did nothing. He's suppose to be healthy, this is his money year -
and

he played like that?

Demps kept getting arm tackled. The one long run Demps had - I don't
think

anyone touched him.

If it were not for a
great

defense - we might have lost to Miami of Ohio !

I thought considering the snaps being dribbled back to him - Brantley did
very well. I think at the half he was 9 of 11 and of the two
incompletions
- one was the drop by Thompson and the other was a drop by Moore? Hits
them

in the hands and they drop it.

Burton looked good - but I would have rather seen him focusing on - and
taking snaps at QB (real stuff - not just goal line) for when Brantley
gets

hurt.

I can see now why they closed practice. 26 yards in 3 quarters? That is
shameful.

What happened to our kicking? We are suppose to have incredible punter
and

place kicker. IN fact, all the special teams - did not look special.

The only bright spot was our defense - but again - it was Miami of Ohio -
which was the about the worst offense in division one last year.

Other than the Gillislee fumble, I was thinking of Rainey fumbling after

Both Rainey and Demps would go down with a stiff breeze. I give Brantley a
pass on today, he was of course hampered by numerous bad snaps by a senior
starter and seriously conservative gameplan which apparently considered
most passes thrown beyond the line of scrimmage a serious risk.

2010-09-04 Thread Arthur Polhill
A very thoughtful post, Jong.

The offensive line was shuffled for this game and will get fixed.  Rainey did
make the tip-catch for our final touchdown.  As for fumbles, I believed we had
about 8 of them, losing two.  Most of them were by Brantley as a result of a
bad
snap, so you can't really blame those on the running backs coach.

I agree that we will improve greatly next week.

Definitely not the best game I've ever seen the Gators play.

I can't explain why the snaps from center were so bad, but as far as the OL
performance overall, I saw a lot of names I didn't expect to see.  For example,
I saw a lot of Halapio.  I also saw Harrison and Silberman.  Maybe some of the
starters got injured, and that's why there was no push from the OL.  I know
Wilson was injured, but they didn't mention the extent.

I don't care what the coaches say, Rainey is no Harvin.  That's not a knock on
Rainey; Harvin is simply the best football player I've ever seen.  Rainey got a
number of touches, but didn't make a significant play that I can remember.

Drayton = fumbles, in my book.  As soon as he left, the fumbles went away.  As
soon as he returns, the fumbles come back.  He may be a good recruiter, but he
leaves a lot to be desired as a running backs coach.

I saw Carl Moore take a big hit to his back.  Hopefully, he didn't get injured
again.

Deonte Thompson looked like he dropped that TD pass early, but it was clearly
interference that wasn't called.  From what I saw, he caught everything else
today.

I like what Omarius Hines brings to the table.  He made several good plays.

All that being said, I'm sure this team will get better.  Everyone wrote off
Oregon last year after their first game, but they got better over the course of
the season.  I think this team will as well.

You're correct in your assessment, Jong.
I would only add the defense was spectacular today. Janoris Jenkins, of course,
and Jay Howard up the middle. Who needs defensive ends when you've got him.
And, the linebacker, number 51. Can't remember his name, played great.

That last "drive" was completely embarassing. They should be handing out
free game passes at the exits. In fact the whole dang offense is offensive.
If you need 5 yds for 4th down conversion how about throwing it 5-6 yards
instead of 3.

This is just all around the absolute WORST we HAVE ever looked in a quarter of
football. Dropped passes, bad shotguns snaps, 2 failed 4th down conversions, 2
fumbles lost, 4 fumbles total, and ONE FIRST DOWN?!?!?!?

Did we not even practice catching, holding on to the ball, receiving a pitch
from the QB?

How about "Games People Play" by Joe South. I'm thinking it was popular
around 1968.

I am pretty sure it was in the fall of 1968 when I was in 9th grade. I
remember dancing to the song at a post football game dance, and I know who I
was dancing with. Weird how just thinking about one song can bring back so
much information, isn't it?

In an amazing turn of events, that same boy found me on Facebook last week,
even though I moved from that area in 1969 and haven't seen him since.
Um... I don't think it's a match made in heaven or anything after reading
his profile. He lives in Montana now and seems about as far to the right as
I am to the left, but it was kinda fun that he'd still look for me on FB
after more than 40 years.

And, to connect this thread to another you guys had me laughing thru today,
I believe that boy was wearing Hai Karate that night. LOL.

I'll start it out with Tommy Edwards' "It's all in the game" from the
1950's.

How many 'game' songs can we list before kickoff?

I got to do something while Randoo learns to boil one cup of water and

Two Daves Pick the SEC

September 4, 2010

Welcome to Two Daves Pick the SEC! If the weatherman isn't a lying SOB, we
should have some nice weather for opening kickoff at most of the SEC games
this weekend. I'm not sure what the deal is, but it seems LSU is involved
somehow with hurricanes at the start of football season. This time its
Earl, in North Carolina, where the Tigers play on Saturday. At least its
far from the coastline.

It appears that The Blind Eye may not be produced after all, it seems that
the NCAA has emphatically told Mississippi to go screw themselves, Jeremiah
Masoli is not playing football this year. I rarely agree with something
the NCAA does, but on this one, I do. Masoli has had his second, third and
fourth chances. Allowing him to transfer after he was kicked out of Oregon
sets a dangerous precedent. So Houston Nutt can cry like the little bitch
he is, but that's not gonna change the outcome.
