Tennessee freshman defensive back Nyshier Oliver was charged with theft by
shoplifting just hours before the Vols hosted Memphis on Nov. 7.

Oliver is the fourth UT football player from the 22-member 2009 signing
class to be involved in a police incident. He joins receiver Nu'Keese
Richardson and defensive backs Janzen Jackson and Mike Edwards, who were
arrested and charged with attempted armed robbery on Nov. 12, five days
 after Oliver was cited.

The citation was issued at Dillard’s department store in West Town Mall at
 1:45 p.m. The UT-Memphis game kicked off at 7 p.m.

He was cited to court after a police officer spotted him trying to conceal
a brown polo shirt worth $110 in a Dillard’s bag.

Oliver, 18, will make a court appearance on Nov. 23.

Oliver has played in one game this season, against Alabama on Oct. 24.

Oliver had an odd recruitment. He originally committed to UT in June under
former coach Phillip Fulmer. He changed his mind and committed to Notre Dame
in October after Fulmer was fired. Then, he committed to UT again just days
before signing with the Vols on National Signing Day in February.

1 month down. Switched to the 14mg patch last week and then tore that off
Saturday afternoon. That means I have ½ a box of 21mg’s, over ½ box of the
14’s and an unopened box of the 7’s at home. I wanted to get off the
nicotine entirely and not wear the 7’s for a week. Really not that bad at
all. Not sure what to expect as all nicotine eliminated, but hope it just
keeps getting easier. Sent notes to ALA and ACS to get a feel for some local
volunteer work. It would be nice to help some other kick this biotch. Thanks
for your support. Day 2 with no patch—I need a beer.

I don't grouse. Just win baby.

A point that writers have not made is that, in our last two title runs, we
have needed style points. We had to jump Michigan to prevent an Ohio State -
Michigan rematch, and last year we needed to jump ahead of Texas.

This year, we don't need style points. We could win every game by 1 point
and still be in the MNC game.

I think that it is not a coincidence that master planner Urban generated
style points in the years where we needed them, and has become very vanilla
this year, especially when the opponent is overmatched; or we are up by two
scores. Notice how many game we have won by exactly 10 points this year?

 My Gator Friends,

Easy boy, it’s called an analogy. I’m not calling him incompetent, I’m
saying he’s inexperienced as an OC calling plays, which he most certainly
is. I was commenting on a specific theory that maybe we’re holding back our
‘real’ offense in a clever ploy to hide our plays from future competition. I
don’t agree. My point is that you don’t have to look for sneaky behavior
when a simple and obvious explanation exists.

Now you may object to my entire premise, citing our 9-0 record, but I
maintain that we’re 9-0 largely because of our defense and that this offense
has not yet come close to meeting its potential (except, perhaps, in the
Georgia game). I also believe that play-calling has a lot to do with that.
Meyer obviously agrees since every offensive change he suggested they would
employ after the MSU game involved a change in play-calling. I’m happy we’re
undefeated, but I would be happier still if our offense were playing to
their potential. We’ll need that to beat Alabama and Texas.

For the record, I’m not unhappy or disgruntled, nor am I complaining. These
are amazing times to be a Gator and I’m having a great time this season. I’m
just objectively discussing the strengths and weaknesses of our team,
something fans have done as long as sports have existed. I guess we could
all limit our comments to ‘Go Gators’ all week, but I’ve always enjoyed a
 little more depth in discussions.

This is such wishful thinking… It reminds me of the old adage, never
attribute to conspiracy that which can be easily explained by incompetence.
Addazio and Meyer aren’t holding anything back. We simply have a new OC who
happens to be an offensive line coach and who calls plays like one. As was
already pointed out, it would backfire as a plan anyway because you must
practice these skills to get good at them. If they did hold back the ‘real’
offense all season, they’d be unable to run it effectively in the
post-season anyway. Like Mullen before him, Addazio will improve over time.

Well that just shows how clueless I am. It wasn’t until I read your
message, Zeb, that I even thought of the standalone word ‘boy’ in that
phrase and all the negative connotations that go with it. I grew up riding
and training horses and ‘easy boy’ was something you said when a horse got
agitated to calm him down. Where I live, it’s just a common way of saying ‘
hold on, don’t get upset, let me explain’ when someone starts to get angry
about something. Seriously, Oliver, if you took it as the pejorative use of
‘boy’ then I do apologize. Nothing could have been further from my mind.

Don't forget...some of the sacks are not totally deep behind the line of
scrimmage...but they are result of TT trying to run but getting stuffed
(meaning, these sacks were not due to OL failing to protect the QB kind of
sacks). Right?

On Tue, Nov 10, 2009 at 12:47 AM, Rob Alexander ga...@wldrth.us wrote:

I think if you’re going to compare stats, you need to look beyond total
yards and look at red zone production. In the MSU game, we moved the ball
freely between the 20’s, but just couldn’t punch it in when we needed to. In
the Georgia game we opened it up enough that we were scoring mostly from
outside the red zone and we turned more conservative against Vandy, and once
again weren’t as productive in the red zone as we were last year. So while
total yards have been consistent, scoring hasn’t been.

I’m wondering about your other point, with the OL. Red zone production is
down this year and sacks are up. Is the loss of Trautwein and Watkins really
making the difference? Maybe so. Haven’t we also lost a couple of good
offensive linemen to injuries this year as well?

Yet, we had 374 total yards in our offensive explosion against Georgia a
 week ago?

I might be mistaken, but I would wager that we also had more possessions
against Georgia due to the multiple INTs.

Basically, 400 yards or so of offense is exceptional. Anyone who thinks
 otherwise needs help.

As was mentioned in this forum, the big difference between this year and
last year is not so much the offense, or the lack of Percy. It is the
defensive scoring and field position. I remember a number of turnovers and
big punt returns that set our team up inside the opponent's 10 yard line.
That as much as anything, led to some of the big scores we put up last year.

I think this stat is remarkable:

 Total Offense

 375 yards - vs. Vanderbilt

 374 yards - vs. Georgia

376 yards - vs. Miss. St.

Could we be any more consistent?

We (I mean our section!) weren't subdued at all.at least in the first 2
quartersbut I did hear a lot of frustrated comments about
no-creativity offense at all...but again, we all were shouting loud...even
though some parts of the stadium became a bit chilly (you know...the
tunneling effect that blows cold air on your face!)

I also thought that a lot of the times, TT didn't have enough time scan for
open receivers (I am not saying there were open wide outs all the time...).

I hear from other Gator fans.
I was not at the Swamp Saturday, but the TV announcers repeatedly commented
on the crowd being subdued. Maybe some of you who were there would have some
take on that. Maybe we fans are uptight and anxious like the team: we're
making them anxious and they're making us anxious. We do need to put it in

 a great year.

One thing the author misses is that it's not about the pursuit of a glass

We just played 2+ games without Spikes, winning them both. Our D was
nothing short of astounding, even without Spikes.

We're playing Vandy this week, for Pete's sake. Spikes could suit up for
the other team, and we would still win.

Meyer disciplining Spikes for a half instead of the entire game had nothing
to do with the desire to win.

We could have suspended him until the SEC Championship and I doubt anyone

The winner of this Saturday’s Florida-Georgia game will get a wooden oar to
 go along with bragging rights.

The University of Florida Student Government announced Wednesday that the
“Okefenokee Oar” would be presented to the game’s winner starting this year,
in the hopes of establishing an annual tradition.

“It’s just a way to increase the friendly competition in the game,” said
 Eric Conrad, student government spokesman.

Presenting such a trophy follows in the tradition of other rivarly
 gameshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NCAA_college_football_rivalry_games.
The winner of Michigan-Minnesota gets the Little Brown Jug, the winner of
Minnesota-Wisconsin gets Paul Bunyan’s Axe and other teams have also
exchanged quirky items in longstanding rivalries.

The oar, which will be presented to the student government president of the
winning university, is carved from a 1,000-year-old cypress tree cut from
the Okefenokee Swamp http://www.fws.gov/okefenokee/, according to
student government. The swamp straddles the Florida-Georgia border.

The oar is “supposed to symbolize the area that has always been fought over
 by the states,” Conrad said.

Is Joe Cox pointing to the next Gator he'll be throwing the ball to? (Bob
 Andres / AJC)

Florida defeated the Georgia Bulldogs again Saturday in Jacksonville with a
large assist from … the Georgia Bulldogs.

After spotting the Gators two touchdowns in the first quarter, Georgia
managed to pull back within four points. But the two bugaboos that have
plagued the Dogs all season derailed any chance of staying in the game:
 penalties and turnovers.

The Dogs had eight penalties in the first half. They fixed that problem in
the second half, drawing only one flag, but switched to their other favorite
way of shooting themselves in the foot, turnovers, with four.

I don’t think that’s what they had in mind when Mark Richt and his staff
have said the Dogs need to play “balanced” football.

Starter Joe Cox was lifted halfway through the fourth quarter after
throwing his third pick of the half, and then we got the answer to the
question of why we haven’t seen more of Logan Gray at QB this season. He is
an absolutely terrible passer. The interception he threw from the Georgia
end zone to Brandon Spikes, who literally walked in for a score, should
become part of an instructional video on how not to play quarterback.

Here’s another reason to hate Georgia.

One could think of many reasons to hate them: Lind… sorry, I can’t type
 the rest of his name.

1942 and Frank Sinkwich, the end zone dance, etc.

But, since the evil butt sniffers are complaining about Urban Meyer
calling time out last year, let’s look at 1968.

The Gators were infighting over two different quarterbacks. We were
playing lousy. It was raining hard and with a few seconds left to play,
while the butt sniffers were ahead 48-0, Vince Dooley called a time out so
that one of his linemen could kick a field goal and run up the score to
 51-0.

I was at that game, dressed in a Boy Scout uniform. Our scout troop had
 volunteered to usher.

Do I want to “hang 50 on ‘em” every chance we get?

 Oh yes, Come On Gators!!!

But why stop with recruiting help? Now that he's been bound and gagged by

Lil Wayne's past is dotted with controversy, including being arrested three

He's expected to serve a year in prison. Notwithstanding his criminal

 triumphed.

I agree with Steve AND Randy. If Dustin had tucked that ball the way he is
supposed to and waited until after he crossed the goal line to relax/show
off, we wouldn't be having this conversation. We might be having one about
the 15 yard penalty he might have gotten for celebrating, but his touchdown
 would not be in question.

It wasn't overturnable(?) as I said, but there is no doubt in my mind that
if those two shots were indeed taken at the same time, that the ball came
out of his hands before he had a chance to carry it over the line.

I'm glad that we got the call. I don't think that you can extrapolate that
if it had been reversed that we would have been in danger of losing.

My orange and blue glasses have lenses as thick as anyone's, but there's no
way that I can conclude that we didn't get away with one in that instance.

 Can you believe those refs?

What a week for Tennessee! Volunteers coach Lane Kiffin coached the team
in the ugly orange uniforms to yet another moral victory, beating Alabama
10-12 when the Tide’s gargantuan defensive tackle Terrence Cody (6-foot-5,
354 pounds) busted through for his second blocked kick of the game on a
potential game-winning field goal by Tennessee kicker Daniel Lincoln.

Who needs actual wins when you can get moral victories over the top two
 BCS teams?

If there is one thing Kiffin has proved at Tennessee, it’s that nepotism
can work. The Vols have played some very good teams close this year. The
biggest reason? He was smart (or related) enough to get his father Monte
Kiffin to join his staff. The elder Kiffin, the defensive mastermind behind
the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ famed Cover 2 defense, has the Volunteers playing
 some stifling D this year.

After the loss to Alabama, Lane Kiffin shockingly opened his mouth in
regard to perceived bias by SEC officials, who failed to penalize Cody for
removing his helmet after the final blocked kick ended the game. He also
pointed out that the officiating crew called eight penalties for a total of
68 yards on Tennessee, while Alabama was flagged just once for 10 yards.

SEC commissioner Mike Slive responded by reprimanding the first-year
Volunteers coach, and warning him of a possible suspension if he is
 disciplined again this year.

So in honor of Kiffin’s latest reprimand, I’m using a picture of Lane
Kiffin doing what he does best: talking. This week’s Caption Planet
selection has the Vols coach giving some important advice to Tennessee
quarterback Jonathan Crompton on the sideline.

Man, I heard the Big Ten was supposed to be a cakewalk.

pointed out that the officiating crew called eight penalties for a
 total of
68 yards on Tennessee, while Alabama was flagged just once for 10
 yards.

   On to this week’s winners.

Our Gatorsports.com readers clearly have a soft spot for former Florida
coach and current (for now) Illinois coach Ron Zook because I got a
 record
number of responses to this week’s photo.

This week’s best caption goes to Steve McKibben of Melbourne, FL. “Any
 of
you frat boys want a piece of me?”

   *Honorable mentions*

“Hey, I used to be the head coach at Florida! Don’t forget that!”
 swampem

“You guys are making it look like I can’t coach”. John C

“You sorority girls leave my football players alone or I’ll kick your
 butt.
You heard what I did to that frat at UF. Ummm, e.” Jim

“Hey, let’s get that corrected out there!” TRG

“Don’t worry guys, I’ll probably find a way to blow this game too!”

He has inexplicably taken a sack *several* times when he could have easily
thrown the ball away. Something is just not quite right with Tim. I'm
wondering if he's just not quite over the concussion, but it seems like he's
really frustrated, too. Maybe he is as aggravated with Addazio and

Tim seems to go down easier. Doesn't break as many tackles. Seems

Freshman guard Nimrod Tishman has been cleared to play for the Florida
men's basketball team by the NCAA Clearinghouse, UF coach Billy Donovan
 announced on Tuesday.

The 6-foot-6 Tishman, who is from Tel Aviv, Israel, averaged 18.6 points,
4.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists at the Under-18 European Championships in
 France this past summer.

Donovan has been pleased with Tishman's passing ability in practice but
said he needs to improve on the defensive end in order to gain more
 significant minutes.

It wasn't overturnable(?) as I said, but there is no doubt in my mind
that if those two shots were indeed taken at the same time, that the ball
came out of his hands before he had a chance to carry it over the line.

I'm glad that we got the call. I don't think that you can extrapolate that
if it had been reversed that we would have been in danger of losing.

My orange and blue glasses have lenses as thick as anyone's, but there's no
way that I can conclude that we didn't get away with one in that instance.

No, the officials didn’t have that technology available. Nor does it prove
 anything.

As it is, Doe was credited with a touchdown. If that’s bad, I’ll volunteer

I can’t believe the football game this evening. F$U has no offense or
defense. Carolina is winning?! It will not be pretty in Gainesville.
Does College football have a mercy rule? Bobby will announce his retirement
date within the next week I bet.

If I was F$U, I would be tempted to have Bowden retire immediately, let
Jimbo take over, then fire him at the end of the season. He is calling a
 horrible game.

Finally, I can’t believe what is happening to F$U’s defense. I know
Andrews can coach defense. What is going on? NC is scoring at will and
they have the bottom ranked defense in the ACC. I will take exception to
Franz Beard who calls the ACC the Almost Competitive Conference. They have
a ways to go before they can be almost competitive.

I believe that the word longer in this sentence is redundant.

This is the first season I have seen him try to check off to the second and
third receiver. Perhaps that was intended to make him a better NFL QB, but
it may have made him a worse college QB.

Sacks are up, and when TT does take off to run, it is later in the play
 with less effective results.

Vols coach Lane Kiffin said Alabama is a more complete team than Florida.

 The Associated Press

 Published: Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at 7:30 p.m.
 Last Modified: Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at 7:30 p.m.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin says the AP Top 25 has it
right — Alabama, not Florida, is the No. 1 team in the nation.
He’s practically an expert. By vaulting over the Gators into the top spot
in The Associated Press poll, the Crimson Tide set up the Vols’ second game
against the No. 1 team in the nation this season.
“I think one poll got it right,” Kiffin said. “If you watch football and
pay attention, I don’t think there’s any doubt who the No. 1 team is.
Alabama has a great team — very well-coached, extremely talented, great
special teams, great on offense, great on defense.”
The Gators are ranked second in the AP Top 25 but first in the USA Today
coaches’ poll and Bowl Championship Series standings.
Kiffin said it’s hard to draw many comparisons between the two teams
besides talent. Alabama favors size, Florida relies on speed.
He said the Crimson Tide (7-0, 4-0 Southeastern Conference) is a more
complete team and says the teams’ games against Arkansas reveals Alabama’s
strength. The Tide beat the Razorbacks 35-7 on Sept. 26 and the Gators
narrowly beat Arkansas 23-20 on Saturday.
“While they’re both great teams, one team kind of beats you in all three
phases: Alabama,” Kiffin said. “The other team will beat you at times but
then a lot of times nobody’s open and the quarterback runs around, makes the
play. These guys are much more balanced.”
The Vols (3-3, 1-2) lost 23-13 at Florida Sept. 19, when the Gators were
No. 1. The fact that Tennessee was competitive when much of the football
world predicted a Florida blowout coupled with a big win over Georgia in its
last game, gives some Vols players hope.
“We let one slip by against Florida, but we’ve put that behind us now,
because we have another opportunity,” guard Vladimir Richard said. “If we
would have just corrected a few things, we’d have won the game. So now we’re
like, ’Let’s not come in Sunday ... and say the same thing.”
A win by the Vols could mean redemption on several levels. It would be
Tennessee’s third all-time win over the top team and would snap a two-game
losing skid against its biggest traditional rival.
Tennessee is the first team to play No. 1 twice in the same season since
Baylor in 2000, when the Bears lost to Nebraska 59-0 and Oklahoma 56-7. In
1992, Arizona beat No. 1 Washington 16-3 (Nov. 7) after losing to No. 1
 Miami 8-7 (Sept. 26).
For Alabama coach Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide, the ranking doesn’t
 really mean anything, though.
“Nothing’s really changed for our guys. I mean, what does it matter? What’s
changed? What’s changed from this week, from this Monday to last Monday?”
 Saban said.
Before this season, the Vols hadn’t played a No. 1 team since losing at
home to Miami 26-3 in their 2002 homecoming game. They’ve twice lost to
Alabama when it was No. 1.
Tennessee has upset only two of the nine top teams it’s faced. An unranked
Vols squad beat Auburn 38-20 in 1985, and 13th-ranked Tennessee beat LSU
 14-13 in 1959.

Yes, they are what they are. So, this year we’re putting up better
numbers against better teams. We’re also undefeated at this point. The
2008 team, as we all remember, was not at this point of the season.

They had one bad game and still won. I think this team has the potential
to do better than last year’s team, and the ’06 team and the ’08 team and
even the ’96 team. They can still go undefeated through the regular
season. They can still win the bowl game. If they do, they will have to be
recognized as the best team in Gator history.

That said, if you think Arkansas was a trap game, you’re going to see a
bigger trap game in StarkVegas this Saturday. MSU has improved each week
since the season began and… we’re playing there!

I think we’ll win, but it’s going to be another difficult SEC game.

I haven’t looked at the Pick’em yet (dumb game) but I’ll bet we’re favored
by a lot less than 24 this week.

So, we get by them and we’ve got the leg humpers, FIU, Vandy and the semis
left. I see the potential to go into the SECCG looking pretty good.

The WRs have to quit dropping those long bombs eventually. They’ll get
better and that should open up the running game even more.

 I’m looking forward to a great rest-of-the-season.

At about the same time last season, a loss to Ole Miss seemed to unite the
Gators and send them speeding off in the right direction after some
early-season struggles. Will a near-loss to Arkansas on Saturday have a
 similar effect?

Will the Gators start opening things up and turning things on like they did
during their national championship run a year ago?

It’s possible. But probably not likely. That’s not to say the Gators won’t
run the table and reach the national title game. What I’m saying is don’t
expect this UF team to become the offensive juggernaut that last year’s team
did after the Ole Miss loss.

Six games into the season, it’s obvious the Gators are what they are.
They’re a very good defensive team that can shut down opponents when they
don’t have breakdowns and mental lapses like a week ago. They’re a
struggling offensive team that doesn’t have the playmakers (especially in
the passing game) they had a year ago to roll up all kinds of points.

Somehow the Gators won a game they probably should have lost Saturday. Like
Tim Tebow said Monday, it took a lot of heart and character to somehow earn
a victory with those four lost fumbles and six sacks.

Maybe the near-loss will take off some of the pressure and UF will start
making some of those plays they’ve been just missing on offensive. Maybe
that will lead to more relaxing games and a wider margin of victory.

But the thinking here is that was just the first of what could be several
down-to-the-wire games for UF the rest of the way. The Gators know they can
win those games, just like they did Saturday.

To win the national championship, the Gators probably will have to do it
the way they did in 2006, when they managed games so well offensively and
found a way to win each week.

Buckle your seatbelts, because it could be a thrilling (and scary) ride the
 rest of the way.

The question that needs to be addressed by the talking heads is whether
UF/Bama could lose a game, win the rest (including the SEC Championship) and
still make the BCS NC game.
It's not clear to me whether that lets Boise/Cincy/TCU into the game.

 Well, well, well.

There is such a thing as a Media Guide that UF still publishes.

In 2006, UF scored 416 points. This is the 8th best offensive performance
in the history of UF. Not sure if the bowl game is included, but this works
out to an average of 35 or 32 points per page.

The 2006 UF defense is not in its all-time top 10 in either total yards or
points allowed (it does make an appearance in rushing defense - 2nd all
 time).

I think that it would be incorrect - and a bit demeaning to Chris Leak - to
state that our 2006 team won the MNC due to its defense.
