second half..in Coach Meyer's, it's "silly, nonsense". This injury could
have happened in the first quarter itself.

Lets keep praying for Tim!

I apologize if this isn’t “news”, but it’s news to me that Tim Tebow is
running a distant 3rd in this award, with Colt McCoy in firm lead.

Folks, I recognize that Tebow is overexposed in the media today, but that
doesn’t take away from the character, commitment, and athletic excellence
we’ve seen from this young man. We surely need more like him in college
football today. Let’s show the nation how we appreciate who he is and how
he plays.

In fact this game was very similar to last year's 30-6. Tebow did struggle
last year too and this year's game would have been (very good probability)
30-6 too but for that stupid fumble by Tebow. Remember, we don't have a
Percy, Louis and more than that, Mullen!!!

That's exactly what I told my wife too...during the game (not that she was
totally listening to me or anything!!!)

I still think that if Tebow didn't fumble the second one, we would be
talking today about how Meyer took a couple of time outs at the end!!! [I
hear that Tebow text'd Coach Meyer and asked him to save a couple time outs
for the end Pat Forde of ESPN said that!!]

Maybe it was Monte's defense, but I did feel like the offensive play calling
could have been a bit more creative...but again, I am spoiled after watching
us trample the cup cakes.

One argument (monday morning...arm chair...whatever!) is the score would
have been 30-6 and that could affect the way a team plays/responds.

You say that from 20 yard line, they could have scored easily since they did
take it all the way fro 4 yard line...but anything "could have" happened!

I am just saying...

*There's an old saying that in the south, football is a religion. This
year's opening day proved it, as the faithful gathered in stadiums all over
the region, clad in their teams' colors and fervently dreaming of gridiron
glory.*

As an Air Force brat, I've lived all over the country and the South is where
football traditions come to life in glorious Technicolor. People in South
Carolina , in
Georgia,
in Alabama , in Mississippi -- in every Southern
state -- live for football. Their children are steeped in it and they grow
up to passionately support the "family team."

I'm currently dividing my time between San Antonio and Columbus, Georgia,
where I work at Aflac. The Aflac Duck is a familiar icon to gridiron fans,
because we advertise heavily during games and also sponsor "Aflac Trivia"
that features little-known football facts.

Since coming to Georgia three months ago, I've been reminded of the South's
passion for pigskin. Yesterday -- game day -- brought it fully into focus.
My husband and I visited the local Winn Dixie (by the way, I love grocery
shopping at Winn Dixie) and the SEC fans were out in full force. Game day
apparel was everywhere, with the loyal Auburn ,
Georgia, Florida and
Tennesseefans sporting their colors with
pride.

Later in the day, when we went out to dinner, the story was the same. I
sported my "Carolina Girls -- Sweeter than Sweet Tea" shirt and was
surrounded by a sea of SEC fans (some of whom congratulated me on my team's
Thursday night victory before rushing off to catch their own teams'
kick-offs). Here's something that's true of SEC fans: We support our
individual teams first and our conference -- including our rivals --second.
It's the way we roll.

So, that said, how did SEC teams fare in their 2009 openers? Fine and dandy,
thank you very much. The Florida Gators, as expected, recorded an easy 63-3
victory over their under-matched victims from Charleston Southern. As one
acerbic sportscaster put it, the Gators essentially took the day off.

Two other SEC teams -- Alabama and Georgia -- took a different route by
facing ranked opponents in their first showings. The strategy paid off in
spades for fifth-ranked Alabama as a flurry of fourth-quarter points put the
kibosh on No. 7 Virginia Tech, with a final score of 34-24. It looks like
the Crimson Tide, which went 12-0 last season before falling to Florida in
the SEC championship game, is the real deal and the team to beat in the SEC
West.

The then No. 13 Georgia Bulldogs employed the same strategy as Alabama,
taking on ninth-ranked Oklahoma State, but experienced a different result.
The Bulldogs looked dominant in the early action, taking a 7-0 lead in the
first quarter, before OSU woke up in the second and eventually claimed a
24-10 win.

The remainder of the teams in the SEC emerged victorious. In the SEC East,
Kentucky , Tennessee and
Vanderbiltenjoyed easy Saturday wins; as
did the SEC West's Arkansas, Auburn, Ole
Miss and Mississippi
State.
LSU's victory over Washington was a bit narrower than the rest with a final
score of 31-23, but -- hey -- a win is a win.

Just a couple of personal notes from Saturday's football extravaganza:

• Add the OSU Cowboy to the list of creepy humanoid mascots. That giant
plastic head -- reminiscent of the Burger King "King"-- is enough to give me
nightmares.

• That iPhone application that makes my phone chime every time an SEC team
scores was a mistake. It sounded like a Las Vegas slot machine Saturday as
the teams racked up points like crazy.

• No wild first-game upsets like last year's Appalachian State victory over
Michigan. Sure, Oklahoma fell to BYU, but that was after the Sooner's
Heisman-winning quarterback, Sam Bradford, injured his shoulder (leading
sportscasters across the nation to ask whether he should have chosen the NFL
draft over another year of college ball). And I felt a little sorry for Navy
in its l

[gatortalk] Re: Did you hear about this Oregon RB that went crazy?

2009-09-05 Thread dbadr...@gmail.com
Yes..it was followed before the game...but unfortunately that didn't really
help with what happened after the game!

IMO - I still like the idea of fostering good sportsmanship but am opposed
to pre-game handshaking especially for a up-temp, hyped up game like
football where on one side coaches are giving adrenaline pumping pregame
locker room talks to keep everybody in that highly amp'd mood...and on the
other side, they are being asked to go shake hands.

I am sure others on this list feel differently...

[gatortalk] Why the FSU-Miami game won't be a sellout

2009-08-27 Thread dbadr...@gmail.com
Why the FSU-Miami game won't be a sellout
 Reason No. 5:
FSU-Miami
is more of a national rivalry than a local rivalry. The
Seminolesand
Hurricanes make for great television, and great ratings, which is why
ESPN desperately
wanted to broadcast this game on Labor
Daynight.

Even when the programs aren't on top of the polls — and only FSU, at No. 18,
will enter this game ranked — Florida State-Miami is still great on TV. But
it's somehow different in this state. For FSU fans, Florida always will be
the Seminoles' chief rival.

Miami fans, meanwhile, are among the most fickle anywhere. Even when the
Hurricanes were competing for national championships every season, the
school had a difficult time filling the seats. But the game still might be a
sellout if it weren't for ...

Reason No. 4: The economy is bad.Even though Tallahassee-area hotels have
become friendlier in these difficult economic times, it remains an expensive
venture to come to Doak Campbell Stadium. Let's say, for instance, you're
driving from Orlando. That's about 230 miles or so. Throw in gas. A night at
a hotel. Food. Tickets. It adds up. And suddenly, watching the Seminoles and
Hurricanes at home on ESPN starts making more sense than spending hundreds
of dollars to watch it in person. But the game still might be a sellout if
it weren't for ...

Reason No. 3: Tallahassee is remote enough — but seems more so for a week
night game.Making it to Tallahassee is already a difficult trip. Anyone who
has spent a significant amount of time on I-10, pulling their eyelids open
during a late-night drive down a dark, lonely stretch of road, knows as
much. Tallahassee is four to five hours from Orlando and Tampa and Atlanta —
all cities with a lot of FSU alumni and fans — and about 2 1/2 hours from
Jacksonville. In short, Tallahassee is a ways away from any major population
center. This is a problem all season long for FSU officials trying to fill
Doak Campbell, but it's even more of a problem for the Miami game, which
comes on a Monday night. It will be difficult enough for the Tallahassee
natives to make it to work on time on Tuesday morning. For those driving
hours from out of town? Forget about it. But the game still might be a
sellout if weren't for ...

Reason No. 2: Doak Campbell Stadium is too big. With an 83,000-seat capacity,
Doak Campbell has about 10,000 more seats than is necessary. When Bobby
Bowdenarrived
at FSU in 1976, the capacity at Doak was 40,500. As he built the
Seminoles into a national powerhouse, stadium expansion followed.

In less than 10 years, the capacity went from 40,500 to 60,519. It remained
there through the 1991 season, and then Doak grew again, this time to 70,123
seats. It probably should have stayed right there. FSU last expanded the
stadium before the 2003 season, which brought the official capacity to
82,300. That might be OK if you're a top-5 program, or if you're playing a
rivalry game every week.

But if FSU slumps — like it did during 7-6 seasons in '06 and '07 — then it
will be stuck with thousands of empty seats. Like there were last season. A
smaller stadium wouldn't hurt demand and, in fact, might help it given that
tickets would become scarcer. As it is now, though, the stadium is too big.
But the game still might be a sellout if weren't for ...

Reason No. 1: FSU isn't back. Not yet.The Seminoles' 9-4 finish a season ago
was their best since 2003, but the program is a ways away from what it used
to be. If FSU were a national-title contender, ranked in the top 5, this
game would be sold out.

And you wouldn't have to worry about the lagging economy, remoteness of
Tallahassee or any other reason why there are still plenty of tickets
remaining.

Winning seems to take care of a lot of those issues.

*F*lorida State's season opener against Miami is not a sellout.

In fact, it apparently is not close to being sold out. This will surprise
people. After all, it's Florida State-Miami. One of college football's great
rivalries. There are lots of reasons why this game is not sold out, and why
it very likely will not be sold out come Sept. 7. Let's examine some of
them, in reverse order of importance.

[gatortalk] Re: Reverend Ike

2009-08-01 Thread dbadr...@gmail.com
When I was there in the early 90's ...almost broke...we ate lunch almost
daily at the plaza where the Hare Krishna guys/gals served free food...it
was really a boone for some of us with limited or no extra cash for eating
out!!!

Do they still serve free food? Anybody know?
