GAY FILM FESTIVAL : DISCUSSIONS, DEBATES WERE HELD

Wide response for gays

Express News Service

Pune, December 4: THE Samabhavana Society working with people of
alternate sexual preferences showcased the same-sex-love culture
existing in India via films, posters, photo exhibitions, discussions
and debates. The event titled Astitva 2005 was held on Saturday and
Sunday at Udyan Prasad Karyalay.

``The gay community faces stigma. Besides, having low acceptability
they are regarded as being impotent,'' says Jasmir Thakur, member of
the Samabhavana Society. The posters created by Rudra K M,
information, education and communication officer with Sambhabhana
society, were aimed at promoting a more tolerant attitude and
stopping violence against AIDS-affected individuals apart from
promulgating safe sex.

Three short films on homosexuality, produced by Samabhavana Society
and HIVOS, a Holland-based agency, and directed by Sachin Kundalkar
were shown at the festival. The first one, Dhruv and I deals with
emotions of homosexuals while The Bath is based on male sex workers
and their emotional issues. The third film, Positive Portrait is a
silent musical spot of five minutes dealing with the problems of an
HIV positive man.

The posters displayed at Udyan Prasad Karyalay contain illustrations
on HIV, safe sex, stigmas attached with the homosexuals and
discrimination against the gay community. The posters on condoms
reflected ingenuous ideas like a poster showing a condom posed as a
gladiator and another one depicting a mirchi in a condom with a
catchline- ``Condom mirchi, its hot.''

Discussions were also held to remove misconceptions generally
associated with the gay community. ``People must be sensitised
towards homosexuals. They must realise that gay persons are inormal
human beings differing only in their emotional and physical needs,''
says Thakur.

The festival saw a good response particularly from women and the
city's gay community. Several elderly men and women also
participated in the discussions.

The festival will move to Delhi, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Bangalore,
Calcutta and Manipur to create awareness.

Re: g_b Is the West finally suffering?

2005-12-05 Thread john haddock

I suggest that this contribution by from the British Health Protection agency is load of hogwash. I cannot believe it is posted with the intent to encourage gays to celebrate and accept their sexuality, but rather to prick us again with the same 'shame stick' that has been stuck into our souls for the last 2000 years. If that is its intent, let me encourage you all to defy its advice.     This spurious piece of nonsense is taken out of context from a paper dealing in great depth with sexual activity in the British Isles. It is extremely important that governments of the world correctly assess the sexual activities of their peoples. This way they can forecast health care needs and birth rates. The Indian government makes a pigs meal of this assessment regularly.  I cannot help but think that this governing care is not the major concern that drives 'priyom dey' to post thisor maybe i just
have a suspicious mind.      The fabricated view point that this truncated message gives is that the British government is preaching to its populous that they should abstain from sex before marriage. They are not, and they do not. The only governments who do that are self righteous entities like the UAE, Iran etc.     In western countries the stigma of illicit sexual congress has gradually receeded under unlightened laws, and therefore the health ramifications of sexual activity are now able to be truely monitered. In countries like India and Pakistan, where sexuality is a socially tainted activity, true health assessment is impossible because of the consequences of telling the truth. You don't admit to rape. You don't admit to sodomy. You don't admit to incest. You don't admit to pedophilia. The result is rampant sexual abuse, misogynic
law making, and creeping, unmonitered, untreated sexual plagues.     Apart from this is the social stigma. I have a friend In Rawalpindi who has lost all through having loved a man for 12 years, then finally given into his desires and lain with him. He has lost business, money, acceptance, friendsand now the earthquake has finished off what his 'friend' did not.     I denounce anyone who tries to supplant free and accepted sexuality with the chains of 'abstainence'. If abstainence means acceptance, then it also means every Indian should wear white make up for acceptance into the Oxford Law school and change his/her name to its anglicized form. Just another form of prejudice, clothed in sweet smelling clothing.     angry     John (Sydney Australia) priyom dey <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: UK urges young people to avoid sexBy Sarah Boseley, Dec 2004London: Young people should be encouraged to considerabstaining from sexoutside marriage as one of the options for protectingthemselves againstthe epidemic of sexually transmitted infectionssweeping the UK, theBritish Health Protection Agency (HPA) suggestedyesterday.Figures from the HPA, released in its annual reportyesterday, show thatteenagers and young people are disproportionatelyaffected by infectionssuch as chlamydia, which can make women infertile, andgonorrhoea. Atelevision advertising campaign to try to change thesexual (and itsrelated social) behaviour of young people will belaunched in the spring, the UK government said yesterday. The pounds Sterling50m campaign will beas big as that of the 1980s which alerted people
tothe dangers of Aidswith graphic images of tombstones and icebergs. It comes at a time when there is concern about theignorance andcarelessness of teenagers and young adults towards sexand an alarmingrise of sex outside marriage. Chlamydia, gonorrhoeaand genital warts areall commonest in women aged 16-21 and men aged 20-26,according to the HPAreport.    __ Start your day with Yahoo! - Make it your home page! http://www.yahoo.com/r/hs

g_b Mumbai City’s homosexual community will continue fighting for Section 377

2005-12-05 Thread gaybombaygroup
Government response doesn't surprise them

City's homosexual community will continue fighting for Section 377
to be repealed.

http://cities.expressindia.com/fullstory.php?newsid=159769

Ameta Bal & Monica Mercer

Mumbai, December 2: THE most popular face of the gay community in
both TV and Bollywood is rather unaffected by the long standing
legal battle around Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

``It doesn't matter what they (law) keep on saying. Most people are
coming out into the open about their sexual orientation. Many are
even experimenting with their sexuality,'' says Bobby Darling.

The general response to the recent affidavit from the
Union Home Ministry—which says India does not favour the deletion of
the said offence from the statute book—seems to be unsurprised
acceptance.

``This is the same old story,'' says prominent gay-rights activist
Dr Ashok Row Kavi, director of Humsafar Trust.

But the government's repeat act has failed to squash spirits.

Gautam Bhan, the Delhi-based editor of the Anthology of Queer
Writing feels that despite the fact that the wording of the UPA's
response almost echoes the words of the NDA, the present
government's stance is more dispassionate and legalistic.

``It could have been much worse. With the previous government, the
gay community didn't even exist,'' he says. ``And considering the
average length of court cases in the country, we haven't been
fighting for very long.''

While a petition was filed to repeal Section 377 by various members
of Mumbai's homosexual communities at a Pride March on August 15
this year, nobody's clear about how many individual appeals have
been made. ``I think at least eight or nine times,'' offers Kavi.

According to Naz Foundation, which was recently in the news for
challenging the validity of Section 377 of IPC, a petition to repeal
has been filed twice. ``The government is in denial,'' says Rahul
Singh, programme director, NAZ, MSM (men who have sex with men
programme).

Film-maker Onir, who directed My Brother Nikhil—the film tackled
AIDS and homosexuality—seconds NAZ's viewpoint.

``The law is so regressive and totally against democracy,'' says
Onir, ``We forget that it (gay sex) has even been a part of our
culture. There's evidence in Indian art, sculpture. Next, they'll
say sex is a western concept so ban it.''

High-profile make-up artist Sylvie believes that by not legalising
homosexuality, the government is promoting promiscuity and an
unhealthy lifestyle.

``So many people commit suicides because of the homophobia that
exists in our society. If only the government removed its blinders,
it would be a step towards helping the rest of the people understand
too,'' he says.

The petition will be sent to the Supreme Court next year, according
to the Lawyers Collective, Mumbai.
