g_b Daddy, Whats Gay ?

2006-01-02 Thread ridgeet roy

My Cousin recently faced a very difficult situation. My 10 year old nephew asked him what was the meaning of "Gay"... naturally the parents was alarmed and asked where did he come across this word... and he said that he heardfrom some TV Channel that Vin Diesel was Gay ......As my sister-in-law explained me this new age dilemna of parenthood, I was wondering about another friend of mine who is battling the decision of explaining his teen son that being gay is not cool ... but a hard choice... apparently the son was caught in a compromising position by his mother recently and the teens rebelled to their respective parents... I wasnt much surprised .. they were in UK ... and very recently I got to date some1 from London, who said that it has now become a fad ...
But whatever it is, the new age parenting is gradually facing this questioning from the impressionable minds ... and the trouble arises with those parents who are themselves leading a two lives ...I know some guys who are trying to bury their past and move on... and once I did ask one of them... what would shedo ifshe happens to come across such moments ... and she promptly repliedthat encouraging would be out of question ... Anyway, so my cousin seemed to explain that it is a decision that a man or a womantakes that he or she will not marry and stay with another friend whois manor women .. who will share the cooking and cleaning and other things... just like how mom andme does it .. but since we dont like such a lifestyle ... we shouldnt talk about it or be like it ...
When I asked my sister-in-law whether it worked .. she smirked and said ... anyways he would come to know about it very soon in school .. so let this be the cover story ... but I know both of them are fearing that this should not encourage or influence ... and I know countless others are also fearing the same ...So they all tend to cover the definion by covering it as a taboo... I remember my mom once classifying it as a psychiatric disorder... and my sister literally ran with a broom after me when I firmly announced her favourite Actor (Shahrukh Khan) having an affair with another Director (which is Karan Johar) .. (which was said as a joke though ... but could be possible anyways ...)So with all such defensive answers we are guarding our children ... and the ones who have already been a part of
that lifestyle .. or are still is ... tries to keep a straight face and say ... ...But would it be possible for you to explain it as simply as the birds and bees ... and whatsmore important ... accept if the son or the daughter turns out to be one too ...Rij

g_b One Sky - Chapter 8 : Just another day

2006-01-02 Thread ridgeet roy

Just another day --As Manish helped his brother up the stairs to his room, Shelly smirked at the thought of her half-brother being bed-ridden for weeks. After all, what could be a bigger punishment to a hardcore party boy but to make him chained to his bed … especially with all the Christmas and New Year Parties around the corner. “Serves him
right”, mused Shelly.“Now wipe off that grin, Miss”.Shelly was brought back to reality by the gruff sound of Margaret, their housekeeper, nanny, maid, cook and a thousand other roles. A role she has been playing for 3 decades now. She has followed Madhavi Kumar with dedication, picking up the pieces of her life, raising her three children, and occasionally, lending her shoulders at certain week moment for the now famous criminal lawyer to cry on …
“What’s your problem?” retorted a bitter Shelly. She had always detested the saintly disposition of Margaret, and especially the fact that she was the one who had been instrumental in convincing Madhavi to bring Aayush in this family. And thus driving away Daddy…“The least you can do is to show your brother a little sympathy.”
“He is not my brother!”“Please Miss. Do not have such thoughts in your mind.”“Mind your own business.”Margaret sighed after Shelly stormed out of the room. She was once such a sweet pretty girl. If only she would understand that Aayush didn’t cause her parent’s to divorce, but it was …Margaret shuddered when she entered Aayush’s room. They didn’t allow her to visit him in the hospital. She prayed that whoever has done this must be punished. She motioned Manish to leave his brother alone for sometime, and quickly opened the windows. After all, he had never been able to stay in a closed room.Aayush grinned at Margaret’s action. She had always been there for him. Margaret pretended not to look at him, and continued to do tid-bits around the room. Aayush sensed she was shocked to see his condition, but continued to wait and watch. Manish guessed that the two needed some time alone, so left the room.“Are you angry on me?”“Why should I be angry, Master Aayush? You stood up for your brother. Even though he was at fault, but still you supported to correct his steps, and that’s not a fault in the eyes of our lord.”“I am sorry.”Margaret looked at Aayush. She had never been lucky to bore a child. But when she took this child in her arms 25 years ago, she never felt any void in her life.
“There is nothing to be sorry about, Master Aayush. Please rest. I will bring you some soup shortly.”Aayush watched Margaret leave the room. Now he was all alone. …“I cannot understand why you need that girl’s number. You gave her advice, and now its over. Sajan, you are taking this issue a bit too seriously.”I gave Urmi a cold stare. She rolled her eyes in frustration and then nodded and proceeded towards her desk. I was determined to
locate that girl, Sweta. After all, it was hard for her, or anyone, as a matter of fact, when one feels that their parents are heading for a divorce. I knew how tough it had been for me, and now I know someone else out there is going through the same. As I waited for Urmi’s signal to start today’s show, my mind kept going back to her words. “Good Morning, Bangalore! Welcome to today’s show with me, Dr. Sajan
Grewal. If you have some problems you wish to share, and also help guide others out there who are possibly going through the same, just dial …”…“Dear Dr. Sajan, this is Hamida. I am working for a call center in electronic city. I am having some problem with the recent developments. You can understand right.”“Yes! I can guess. Go ahead Hamida.”“After that rape, my parents are pressuring me to leave the job. They are really worried. I know they have a point, but I don’t want to leave my work. I love it you know, it gives me a sense of achievement and independence. What should I do?”Sajan didn’t notice Jai
watching him. He was carefully observing the most talked about radio psychiatrist of the town. A psychiatrist who is definitely not fashionable, yet subtly sober in appearance. A psychiatrist who is definitely not handsome, but has a boyish charm about him… and something in his eyes. Something, that Jai has been feeling for some time now. Something that is makes him long to spend some more time with him. Something that he hasn’t felt for quite some time now. “Well! As you rightly said, your parents definitely have a right to worry. It is a sad event. And naturally the safety of our children is a matter of great concern. But if you don’t want to leave your job, then my suggestion would be to speak openly with
your parents, show how your organization is taking steps to ensure your safety. If necessary ask your boss or HR to speak to them.”“Do you think it will work?”“Why don’t you try it out once? You will never know unless you take a chance.”

g_b The cutest guy at the party, where are you ?

2006-01-02 Thread handsomewellbuilt
At the GB New Years party, there was this really cute and extremely
good looking tall guy wearing a black suit with a blue shirt. I just
can't stop thinking about it. I think his name was David, not too sure
on that one coz i didn't get a chance to speak to him but got to know
through a friend. I thought it would be nice if i spoke to him towards
the end of the party, just incase he rejects me or decides to ignore
me then i wouldn't have spoilt my day but then he was gone. At around
3am,I was searching for him n he wasn't there or at least i didn't see
him. I forgot to checking the lounging area. He must have gone to eat
dinner or must have left. If anyone can tell me how i could get in
touch with him, i'd be eternally grateful and if i am extremely lucky
he would probablly be reading this and email me .

g_b What you should know about web searches

2006-01-02 Thread gaybombay

What You Should Know About Web Searches
A Guide to Hidden FeaturesOf Google and Yahoo Engines;
Avoiding the 'CHiPs' LinksDecember 28, 2005;PageD1
Doing a search in Google or Yahoo seems as easy as falling off a log. You just type in a word, and almost instantly you get a page of links to Web sites that bear some relevance to that search term.
But too often your search results aren't exactly what you'd like. Irrelevant links can clutter the page, especially when your search term is ambiguous. If you type in chips, the search engine has no way of knowing whether you mean computer chips, potato chips or chocolate chips. In fact, when I tried searching Google for that term a few days ago, the top result was a reference to the old CHiPs TV show.

A few simple tips and tricks can help you get much more out of a Web search without becoming a professional researcher. Some are better techniques for general searches, others are simple ways to do more-targeted searches, which can often yield answers, rather than merely links. For instance, most people don't know that Google and Yahoo (the biggest, most-popular search engines) can perform math calculations and currency conversions, look up addresses based on phone numbers, and more.

The easiest way to get better search results is to use two or three words, every time, instead of just one. Search engines do much better when they have a little context to help narrow the results. If you're thinking of going golfing in Scotland in the summer, a search on Scotland is a waste of electrons. But using three words -- Scotland, golf and summer -- is much more on target and takes only a few seconds more. Similarly, typing in chocolate chips or computer chips yields a results list on which that old CHiPs TV show is nowhere to be found. (You don't have to type the word and between your search terms, because Google always assumes it's there.)

Another great tip is to surround your search terms with quotation marks if you're looking for an exact name or phrase -- say a song title made up of common words. When Google or Yahoo (or most other search sites) see words in quotes, they interpret the words as an exact phrase and look only for instances where the words appear in their entirety, in the order you entered them.

Combining these techniques is even better. If you're looking for lyrics to the Bob Dylan song I Want You, the best thing to do is enter the title in quotes, followed by the words Dylan and lyrics not in quotes.

You can also sharpen searches in Google by instructing the search engine to exclude certain topic areas that might clutter the results. This is done by following your search term with a space, then a minus sign followed by the topic you want to exclude. For instance, my search for chips would have excluded its very top listing, for the old TV show, if I had typed chips -TV.

Or, you can focus your Google search on a certain topic area by using the + sign. A search for Washington +mountain is very different from a general search on Washington. (You'll get narrow info on mountains in the state, rather than links ranging from the University of Washington to the Washington,
D.C., transit authority.)
Other search-sharpening methods can be found on the Advanced Search pages of both Google and Yahoo. These are essentially forms you fill out that let you customize your search in numerous ways.
Both Google and Yahoo also are packed with hidden search tricks that make getting information faster. They aren't foolproof, but they will frequently turn up an answer right on the results page, without requiring you to click on a link.

Here are some examples:
In both search engines, typing in a stock symbol gets you the company name, latest price and a price chart, right at the top of the results page.
Typing in a U.S. street address in Google gets you a link to a map of the location. Yahoo goes one step better -- it actually shows the map on the results page.
Entering a U.S. land-line phone number in Google or Yahoo gives you the name and address of the person to whom it belongs.
Current weather conditions for U.S. cities can be displayed in Yahoo by typing the city name followed by the word weather. In Google, you type the word weather first, followed by the city name.

In Yahoo, if you type in the name of a sports team and the word scores, you will get the current score of a game in which the team is involved.
In Google, you can type in certain fact-based questions, like population of Boston or birthplace of Tom Brady and you get the answer, not just a link to the answer.
If you type simple math problems, like 5x8.1999, into the search boxes of either search engine, the sites act like calculators, spitting back the result.
Both sites will also perform conversions of weights and measures, and currency conversions, right in the search box. In Google, you just type in questions like 37 centimeters in inches or 7,000 yen in us dollars. In Yahoo, you begin such questions

g_b Brokeback mountain

2006-01-02 Thread queercommando
Isn't anyone else slightly uneasy about a gay film written by a woman
and starring two straight (correct me if I am wrong)actors?

I haven't seen it and expect that I am wrong. But anything so hyped I
often find is a dissappointment.

From the common sense angle, any work of art which portrays
homosexuality in a positive light gets my vote.

I am terrible. I thought it was called Bareback Mountain with sexual
connotations

g_b From The Observer's New Year issue: Lovers in law

2006-01-02 Thread Vikram
Not more articles on gay marriage in the UK... well just a few, since
these are two good ones from The Observer's New Year issue. The first
was on what an ordinary revolution gay marriage was - ordinary in how
the changes it has effected will be felt by ordinary couples, not
just celebrities too, and ordinary too, in that it is such an obvious
thing that many people can hardly see it as a revolution at all.

The first article is an overview, but the second one is the really
moving one, for the personal story of two men who met in 1951 and
have been together since. Marriage in such a circumstance seems just
an afterthought to a relationship far deeper established than
anything legal could be.

Lovers in law

We know about Elton and David, but what about Ben and Dick, Mark and
Shaun, Karen and Joanne? This is the story of how 'Pink Wednesday'
validated the love of three gay couples

Louise France
Sunday January 1, 2006
The Observer

Ben Duncan proposed to Dick Chapman in the summer of 1952 but he
still remembers the occasion vividly. He'd chosen the perfect place,
the perfect time of day: Oxford's Christ Church meadow at sunset. In
the distance, punts floated by on the River Cherwell. 'What I had
wanted all my life was to find one other person, and I knew I had
found him,' he recalls. 'We went for a walk and sat on the benches
under the walls of Merton College to look at the wonderful view. I
thought to myself, this is the right moment to ask. After a suitably
dramatic pause, I turned to him and suggested we spend the rest of
our lives together.'
Ben was over six foot tall, a romantic and impulsive American from
Alabama, bewitched by England: 'It was the country of my dreams. I
had built up a unrealistic idea of it based on literature but I had
stepped into a dream, and Dick was part of that dream.'

As for Dick, he was handsome and practical, the son of high-achieving
Cambridge academics. 'There are moments in your life you remember
absolutely, for ever after,' he says, taking up their story. 'And
Ben's proposal was one of them. I thought it was wonderful but I also
thought how could this possibly be? Ben had no rights to stay in
England, no visible means of support, no family.'

Furthermore, Ben was suggesting they live as a couple - two men in
the kind of relationship that could land them in prison if discovered
by the authorities; the kind that would remain illegal for another 15
years.

Over half a century later, at 9.30am on 21 December 2005 in a
brightly lit office in Cambridge, Ben and Dick were one of the first
couples in the country to register as civil partners. There was
little fuss, no lavish reception or meandering speeches. At their
request, no family members were present. Instead, a younger gay
couple acted as their witnesses, and Ben and Dick were theirs.
Afterwards, all four returned home for lunch and the chance to talk
about what the day had meant to them all. 'I never imagined this
moment would come,' says Ben, 78. 'I suppose during the early years
of the gay movement the idea was floating around, and I
thought Wouldn't it be wonderful?, but I never really believed I
would live to see it happen.' Dick, 75, agrees: 'I can still hardly
believe it,' he says.

Judging by the media coverage the following day, one might have
imagined the only ones to walk up the aisle on 'Pink Wednesday' were
Elton John and David Furnish (not forgetting their black and white
spaniel Arthur, nipping at their polished heels). However, almost 700
other same-sex couples across Britain also took advantage of the
historic new legislation. Over the last month I've followed three of
them: Ben and Dick, Mark and Shaun Johnson from Liverpool and Karen
Carter and Joanne Ellerington, who live in Blackpool.

On a purely practical level, all have spent their first Christmas
together secure in the knowledge that they can now automatically
inherit from each other without a will, benefit from their partner's
national insurance contributions and pension, be exempt from
inheritance tax and treated as a couple for immigration purposes.
Nine other European countries already have similar legislation but
for the first time in British history privileges which have been the
right of any married couple - most poignantly, the right to register
a loved one's death and to be automatically consulted about hospital
treatment - are now enshrined in law for gay partners, too. In the
event that any of them should decide to divorce, they won't be able
to until 2007. As with any doomed marriage, they must give the
relationship a go for at least a year and expect the same division of
assets if it does go wrong.

But talking to these newly hitched couples, it's clear the
legislation is as much to do with love and romance as any of the
legal small print. 'Civil partnership' might be one of the least
sentimental phrases ever concocted, and filling in a form might not

GayBombay Goes Kite Flying on Sunday 15 January 2006!
~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~

Time: 4.30 pm onwards.
Venue: Juhu beach. We'll assemble near the Shivaji Statue outside
the Ramada Palm Grove Hotel between 4.30 - 5.00 pm and then proceed
to the main beach. Look for someone wearing a black cap.
Location: Vile Parle (West) is the closest train station.

SANKRANTI: It's January and in Gujarat and Maharashtra that means
just one thing: its time to start flying kites again! At this time of
the year the breezes are strong and the weather is pleasant enough
for people to spend all day flying kites from their rooftops. Go to
Bhuleshwar, one of the older districts in Bombay, and you'll find the
streets full of makeshift kite shops and the skies full of kites.

In particular people fly kites on Makar Sankranti in Maharashtra and
Utraan in Gujarat. It symbolises the begining of the Sun's journey
towards the northern hemisphere. This year Makar Sankranti falls on
Saturday 14 January and, for the fifth time, Gaybombay will be
celebrating it by flying kites on the following Sunday.

Everyone who came last year can tell you what a blast we had; after
we finished flying the kites we looked for other means to have fun on
Juhu beach.

Kite flying is a delicate thing: it's all about the skill at handling
the wind, knowing how to handle the manja (the thread), when to let
it go slack and when to pull abruptly. We have some pretty good kite
flyers among us. So it's going to be an interesting evening.

~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~`~

There's obviously no cost for this meet. We'll be buying a certain
number of kites. But you're welcome to bring your own kites and, even
more important, your manja (the kite flying thread). Just try to make
sure the kites are pink! See you there.

g_b Hearing Aid

2006-01-02 Thread naughty confessions

An elderly gentleman had serious hearing problems for a number of years. He went to the doctor and the doctor was able to have him fitted for a set of hearing aids that allowed the gentleman to hear 100%. The elderly gentleman went back in a month to the doctor and the doctor said, "Your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again." The gentleman replied, "Oh, I haven't told my family yet. I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I've changed my will three times!"
