g_b Rajpipla prince to set up old-age home for gays
Rajpipla prince to set up old-age home for gays From Mumbai Mirror, 11 June 2008: Rajpipla prince to set up old-age home for gays Prince Manavendrasinh Gohil also plans to employ gay men and will train them to look after senior citizens Dhwani Pathak Bangalore: Prince Manavendrasinh Gohil of Rajpipla, the country's first known gay royal, is planning to set up an old-age home for gay senior citizens in his hometown. There's no place for homosexuals in this heterosexual world. What'll happen when we turn old? We require a strong support system, he says. Isolation, he feels, is worse than death. Gohil believes gay couples need to lead a happy life at least during the last phase of their life since they would have had a humiliating first phase. Manavendrasinh Gohel In India, gay rights is still seen as a perverted western practice being imposed on vulnerable minds. That's one reason, Gohil decided to come up with a place for elderly gay couples. A home for elderly gays is important. There are so many gay men whose families have disowned them. They need to be looked after when they are old and feeble, says Gohil, who also works for HIV/AIDS organisation in the state. He plans to employ gay men and train them to take care of the senior citizens. Men belonging to this sexual orientation group have a natural inclination towards nursing people. If they are trained properly, they can take care of the elderly very well. It'll also provide employment opportunities to younger gay men, he says. Initially, we'll have 50 inmates and we can expand as and when needed. It'll be a home away from the city and will be located by the river Narmada. There can't be a better location for the home. Gohil has been talking to sponsors about the project and will also be lending as much financial support as possible. He also plans to set up a crematorium nearby. There have been lot of enquiries and as soon as the funds are ready the construction will begin.
g_b Fwd: UN calls for lifting travel restrictions on HIV carriers
*UN calls for lifting travel restrictions on HIV carriers* 5 days ago http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5iYcq1TVit1bEKek4glkc8ntxZgMA UNITED NATIONS (AFP) — UN chief Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday called for an end to discrimination against people carrying the AIDS virus, including travel restrictions imposed on them by some countries. I call for a change in laws that uphold stigma and discrimination, including restrictions on travel for people living with HIV, he said at the opening of a two-day, high-level meeting in the General Assembly on UN targets set in 2001 to roll back the disease worldwide. Halting and reversing the spread of AIDS is not only a goal in itself, it is a prerequisite for reaching almost all the others (poverty-reduction Millenium Development Goals by 2015), he added. He said that 60 years after the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted, it is shocking that there should still be discrimination against those at high risk, such as men who have sex with men, or stigma attached to individuals living with HIV. I am a person living with HIV, and by revealing my HIV status publicly, I am taking a risk of being banned from entering this country and over 70 other countries around the world, said AIDS activisit Ratri Suryadarma of Indonesia. A letter signed by 345 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) was sent to leaders and ambassadors of concerned countries to urge them to lift the restrictions. According to UNAIDS, the global standard-bearer in the fight against HIV, 74 countries are subjecting HIV carriers to restrictive measures, including a mention of the disease on their passports. Twelve among them -- Armenia, Colombia, Iraq, Oman, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Solomon Islands, South Korea, Sudan, the United States and Yemen -- barred entry to HIV carriers, often citing public health concerns and the high cost of treatment. Innocent Laison, a member of the Senegalese NGO Africaso, denounced such restrictions, pointing that countries which impose them allow their own HIV-infected nationals to go abroad. Salvadoran President Elias Antonio Saca, who lifted such restrictions in his country four years ago, backed the NGOs' call. I appeal to the international community and all governments for the scrapping of walls and barriers which restrict the free movement of people living with HIV, he said. Meanwhile AIDS expert Anthony Fauci, the head of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, stressed the importance of prevention and continuing research. He recalled that AIDS was discovered 27 years ago and that considerable funding was still needed to combat the disease.
g_b Fwd: Indian Parliamentary panel unhappy with under-utilisation of funds for AIDS programme
And we have been crying hoarse for years now, that State AIDS Control Societies do not spend even the money allocated for MSM HIV work, prefering to keep the money un-utilised than give it to some CBO of MSM to work for HIV prevention. I call it state exhibited homophobia at its best... - Aditya B -- Forwarded message -- *Parliamentary panel unhappy with under-utilisation of funds for AIDS programme* June 14, 2008 *Joseph Alexander, Pharmabiz, New Delhi** *Expressing displeasure over the under-utilisation of funds for the national AIDS control programme in the last financial year, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Family Health has drubbed ministry by backing the World Bank report on poor implementation of projects. The panel has turned down the argument of the ministry on the World Bank detailed implementation report in January that pulled up the projects, including one related to AIDS, for its deficiencies. The Health Ministry had spurned the report claiming that it suffered from several infirmities and claimed that WB did not take into account of the penal measures in this regard. The Committee is not fully inclined to agree with the contention of the Ministry. Some of the corrective measures in centralized procurement clearly indicate that besides deficiencies at the state level, implementation at the Central level was also not upto the mark, the panel said in its recent report on demands for grants. The panel also expressed its displeasure for not achieving the physical targets and utilizing the funds fully during the last financial year. The plan provision of Rs 815 crore was increased to Rs 953.89 at revised estimation stage. But only Rs 769.34 crore could be utilized during the entire year. During 2006-07 also, the department failed to achieve optimum utilization. The AIDS control programme accounted for nine per cent of the national health budget. It seems that weekly monitoring meetings at NACO level and quarterly monitoring meetings with the State SACs followed by visits of teams of officers to the States to ascertain the progress of work and level of expenditure have failed to make any noticeable improvement, the report said, while asking the department to make sure that Rs 1100 crore allocation would be used fully. Analysing the physical targets, the committee found a big gap between goals and achievements. Though modernization of 39 district level blood banks was planned, only one could be done. Out of the 40 blood component separation units, none has come up. Likewise, 154 district units were planned, not even single one could be established. The committee is dismayed to note that progress made under several components of the programme is abysmal and the trend has been continuing irrespective of the issue being raised again and again. The committee has been viewing with serious concern the trend of targets remaining under-achieved in the past few years, the report said. The panel was told that the department would set up a National Blood Transfusion Authority and 4 metro blood transfusion medical and banking centres with component separation facility, besides a plasma fractionation plant during the current year. The committee also expressed alarm over the increasing number of NGOs being blacklisted and sought a detailed status report. -- Do not print this mail unless really necessary. g_b When it comes to sex, men don't have all the answers
When it comes to sex, men don't have all the answers Tue, Jun 17 01:15 AM AT A time when the government is trying every possible method to bring down the ever-increasing population, curious young men who are turning to it for answers on sex and related matters may just do the trick. An analysis of data collected by the government's first interactive call centre of the Indian Population Stabilisation Fund, run by international BPO Vcustomer, shows men - especially those from the not-so-affluent sections - are seeking more information on sex than their female counterparts. Of the 1,655 calls received till June 11, the first week of the call centre, about 60 per cent were from young men asking about things like the ill-effects of masturbation or oral sex, homosexuality and orgasms. Women, on the other hand, wanted to know about abortion and contraception options, including natural ones. Among older men and women, infertility was a major issue of concern, the data shows. The call centre also received some strange calls. About two-three per cent calls were from adolescents who wanted to know how women react in bed if satisfied after intercourse, said Shailaja Chandra, executive director of the Fund. How to abort a baby was another frequent query from youngsters, she added. That a majority of the queries came from young men is understandable, as they live in a society where talking about sex is still taboo, an official of the United Nations Population Fund said. Normally, girls have their mothers who tell them about important issues like menopause. But boys don't find such a framework in their families. It shows there is paucity of information for youngsters who want to know more, Chandra explained. Another interesting aspect noticed was the eagerness among young Indians to opt for modern contraceptives like condoms and pills. Till recently, a health ministry study had shown the participation of men in contraception going down.

Re: g_b What can we do? Or what we CAN do?
This is a very good idea Nishant. I think we shoud extend this beond Orkut to also Facebook, and other networking sites that have users here. The gudelines that you have set up is a good one and should apply to all such sites. Best, Aditya B 2008/6/17 Nishant Jain [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Dear Members! You must be knowing that a fight against section 377 is going on in Delhi high court. We are having some time before Delhi high court gives its final verdict. If we loose this chance, don't know when the next chance will come. Govt of India opposes gay right because according to the officials, it will hurt public morality. If that is the case we must reach the public for heir support. We have seen in recent past that support from the mass can change a lot. I was wondering how we can reach a broader spectrum of people in general. We discuss all gay right related issues in the forums whose members are mostly gay/bi. We must reach those people who are having all wrong notions about homosexuality and homosexuals. Otherwise nothing will change. How about going to different orkut and other net communities, like human rights, youth initiative for peace, or youth India and put our views there? If we can convince at least a section of netizens, I guess we can build a huge mass support. Can we send letters to newspapers at least one letter from each members of this and other gay right groups? We don't need to come out our closet for that. We have to think of different avenues so that we can reach straight people without coming out. My proposal for orkut users: 1. To clear all the offensive pics and videos from the profile before we start canvassing. 2. We will check for different communities and wherever we will feel suitable, we will post our views. 3. No attack on religion. 4. If one feels that he is not good at canvassing/ writing, can copy paste from different websites and then post. 7. We don't have much time. So we should start it latest by this coming monday. 8. Can the moderators send this message to other Gay forums? 9. If somebody has some media connections please use that to bring gay right issues centerstage. Please spread the message to all other gay related communities. we must do a vigorous propaganda to bring the issue in center stage. -- Messenger blocked? Want to chat? g_b Bombay Dost Sunday High film screening: 'relax... It's Just Sex' (22 June 2008)
Info from: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0159696/ Synopsis: The story revolves around the lives of a coterie of friends of various sexual orientations and temperament. After two of the gays are attacked and fight back their attackers, the group becomes divided on their actions. Jennifer Tilly is the mother hen of the group who tries to hold everyone together. Reviews: Relax...It's Sex has all the elements of a good film. The first scenes grab you with their hilarity and contrast and the last with honest emotion that seems to summarize the intent of the film. What's between is very good as well. The film has believable characters in believable situations that show a wide range of emotions from to joy to sadness, from fear to liberation, from rage to empathy, as well as many others. It is also laugh outloud funny. Highlights include a dinner party where the meaning of AIDS is debated—after one in the group announces his HIV+ status; a breakfast with a lesbian, her new boyfriend and her parents, where the parents are aghast that she's dating men now, after breaking up with her lover of 9 years whom they adored; a meeting between one of the main characters and Aunt Mahalia, played wonderfully by Paul Winfield; and a rape scene which leaves the viewer to answer very uncomfortable questions about violence and retribution. Wisely, the film does not answer any of the weighty questions it presents. It only presents them in a sometimes funny, often poignant way. Run time: 110 mins Note: This event was rescheduled to 22 June due to the heavy rains on 8 June. --- Screening time: 5.30 p.m. onwards Venue: The Humsafar Trust's Drop-in Centre, 4th floor, Municipal Transit Building, Vakola Municipal Market Building, Near Raheja Point and Vakola Masjid, Santacruz (East), Mumbai. g_b Boy Victims of Commercial Sexual Exploitation
Boy Victims of Commercial Sexual Exploitation Though they often go unreported, boys around the world also face the trauma of trafficking for commercial sexual exploitation. According to ILO and UNICEF, two percent of those forced into commercial sexual exploitation are men or boys, but the practice might be far more widespread than reported due to social stigmas associated with sex with boys. The sexual exploitation of boys may take place in informal, unorganized settings, making them both vulnerable to abuse and less likely to be identified by authorities charged with assisting them. Young street boys form relationships with older boys for protection, and are sometimes forced by these boys to have sex with older men for profit as part of the relationship. Public meeting places are often arranged, including parks, markets, bus terminals, rail stations, hotels, beaches, and movie theaters. When boys have pimps, they may endure injections with hormones to accelerate physical maturity and increase sexual performance, with painful results and long-term health consequences. Traffickers have also been known to lure boys into prostitution by making them dependent on drugs and alcohol. Culture and stigma play a significant role in the victimization of boys in prostitution. Some researchers, for instance, believe that strict gender-segregation can foster the sexual exploitation of boys in situations when adult men do not have access to women for sex. In Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India, for example, boys are sometimes forced into prostitution behind the cultural practice of bachabazi or launda dancing—where boys dressed as girls dance at weddings and private parties for men. A different concern was highlighted by a research study on commercial sex in Costa Rica, which concluded: Local demand for young boys arises because homosexuality is heavily stigmatized in Costa Rica, so `respectable' Costa Rican men prefer to pick up boys from the street and take them somewhere discreet to use them rather than to enter into open homosexual relationships with their social and/or age equals. Sexual exploitation of boys is also found in tourist destinations. The beaches of Sri Lanka, Mexico, and Dominican Republic are host to men seeking sexual encounters with boys who are pimped by men or other boys. In Thailand, boys aged between 10 and 15 can earn $280 a night having sex with foreign men. In some European cities, including in Great Britain and the Czech Republic, rent boys, often very young, are exploited in train stations by incoming tourists. According to NGO sources, Ghana and the Gambia face a growing problem of boys in prostitution. The hidden nature of these boys' trauma means they receive little or no help. Social stereotypes that presume boys cannot be exploited in prostitution often result in their exclusion from assistance, forcing many to remain silently in the sex trade. http://www.state.gov/documents/organization/105501.pdf
