George Michael is so happy with his boyfriend he can't write sad songs.

The Fastlove singer has to rely on tales of other people's tragic love lives
to inspire him because life with Kenny Goss is so blissful.

He said: I have this wonderful partner. Through rows, misunderstandings and
pain we have actually reached a fantastic place.

So recently I've had to write about other people's lives when I want to hit
that lonely mood. I have to refer to other people's pain.

George - who has been dating Kenny since 1996 - also admits his happy personal
life has stifled his creativity and cost him chart success.

He added to the Los Angeles Times newspaper: I was most successful when I was
the loneliest. And I think most people are lonely, even in love.

We all know the difference between great sex and something which is totally
about loving someone.

And by a certain age, we know that kind of love is not a lifelong pattern for
many people.

George, 44, has previously revealed he and Kenny, 49, enjoy an open
relationship and are free to see other people.

He said: Gay relationships are a bit different. I'm sure we'll be allowed to
roam if we want to. But we love each other dearly.

UK / Survey reveals that 41% of HIV infected men are unaware of status

By Adam Lake • June 17, 2008 - 13:05

Curiously, undiagnosed men were more likely to report their most recent HIV
test was in the 12 months prior to the survey than HIV-negative men, but
were less likely to report never having tested
No Comments Yet on Survey reveals that 41% of HIV infected men are unaware
of status

A recent survey has revealed that HIV positive men who are aware of their
diagnosis are more likely to have unprotected sex then men who are unaware
of their status.

The survey, which took oral fluid samples from over 3500 men in gay bars,
clubs and sauna's around the UK, found that 9% of men who took part in the
survey were HIV positive.

The surveys were carried out in Glasgow and Edinburgh by the MRC, and in
London, Brighton and Manchester by the UCL Centre for Sexual Health and HIV
Research.

Of the 3501 men who took part in the survey 318 (9%) were found to be HIV
infected and of these 131 (41.2%) were unaware of their status. 92% of those
who were found to be HIV infected have previously had and HIV test and 62.3%
thought that they were still HIV negative.

The results also found that men with undiagnosed or diagnosed HIV positive
status were more likely to have unsafe sex then men who were HIV negative.

The results show that although persuading more men to find out there status
is important, more work needs to be done to persuade men who are aware or
unsure of their HIV status to practice safer sex.

In all five cities, trained fieldworkers distributed anonymous,
self-complete questionnaires, and oral fluid collection kits to collect
samples to be tested for HIV antibodies.

The comparable questionnaires included demographics, HIV testing history,
perceived HIV status, and experience of STI's in the previous year.
Questions on sexual behaviour included number of partners, partner type, and
knowledge of partners' HIV status.

The survey found that HIV-negative men were generally younger than
undiagnosed and diagnosed HIV-positive men. The majority of the men surveyed
had some education beyond secondary school, but this was significantly lower
among the men diagnosed with HIV.

There was a similar pattern for employment, with fewer men with diagnosed
HIV being currently employed.

Curiously, undiagnosed men were more likely to report their most recent HIV
test was in the 12 months prior to the survey than HIV-negative men, but
were less likely to report never having tested.

Men who were aware of their HIV-positive status reported the highest levels
of sexual risk.

The research also adds that these results may only be the tip of the
iceberg, stating:

It is possible that men who only have safer sex could have been more
willing to participate in the surveys than men who do not, therefore
underestimating actual levels of sexual risk behaviour.

There is no way to determine this but the anonymous, self-complete nature
of the surveys hopefully limited this bias.

The report concluded:

The suggested reductions in new HIV infections that would result from
decreases in undiagnosed infection rely on an assumption of lower sexual
risk among those aware of their HIV-positive status, as well as the likely
reduction in infection amongst those well controlled on antiretroviral
therapy,

However, in our study, it was men who were aware of their HIV-positive
status who reported the highest levels of sexual risk, and the higher
likelihood of unprotected anal sex with two or more partners among men
diagnosed over a year earlier, suggests that maintenance of safer sex
behaviour may be problematic for men living with HIV.

Terrence Higgins Trust's Will Nutland, who is the Strategic Lead in Health
Promotion for the sexual health charity, told PinkNews.co.uk:

All of the data shows that at the point of HIV diagnosis it is men who
practice unsafe sex who are more likely to be found to be HIV positive,

Men who are testing positive for HIV infection are more likely to be
practicing unsafe sex, I don't believe it is the case that men start to
practice unsafe sex after their find out their status.

What is most concerning about these results is the large amount of gay man
who are unaware of their HIV status,

The Terrence Higgins Trust is about to review our policy on this but we
believe that men who have sex with men should have at least one annual
sexual health check up and those in high risk groups should be thinking
about having three or four.

Earlier in the year THT announced that it is to offer a range of paid-for
sexual health tests and treatments by post.

THT by Post offers testing and treatment for chlamydia and gonorrhoea,
testing for HIV and treatment for genital herpes and non-specific
urethritis.

g_b one step closer to the gay gene

2008-06-18 Thread jhfraj
If these findings hold true, it may be another step closer to proving
that we are born gay and it's not choice. On the other hand, it may
also be a step closer to science wanting to fix the gay gene through
genetic manipulation. If it comes to that, it's only a matter of time
before the only gay children being born are of parents too poor to
afford genetically altered sperm/ eggs or liberated parents who
welcome a natural child whatever his orientation.

Part of their research puzzles me: Both gay and straight men, for
example, tend to prefer younger partners.
Doesn't each younger partner want an older one?

What the Gay Brain Looks Like
Tuesday, Jun. 17, 2008 By ALICE PARK

What makes people gay? Biologists may never get a complete answer to
that question, but researchers in Sweden have found one more sign that
the answer lies in the structure of the brain.

Scientists at the Karolinska Institute studied brain scans of 90 gay
and straight men and women, and found that the size of the two
symmetrical halves of the brains of gay men more closely resembled
those of straight women than they did straight men. In heterosexual
women, the two halves of the brain are more or less the same size. In
heterosexual men, the right hemisphere is slightly larger. Scans of
the brains of gay men in the study, however, showed that their
hemispheres were relatively symmetrical, like those of straight women,
while the brains of homosexual women were asymmetrical like those of
straight men. The number of nerves connecting the two sides of the
brains of gay men were also more like the number in heterosexual women
than in straight men.

Just what these brain differences mean is still not clear. Ever since
1991, when Simon LeVay first documented differences in the
hypothalamus of gay and straight men, researchers have been struggling
to understand what causes these differences to occur. Until now, the
brain regions that scientists have come to believe play a role in
sexual orientation have been related to either reproduction or
sexuality. The Swedish study, however, is the first to find
differences in parts of the brain not normally involved in
reproduction — the denser network of nerve connections, for example,
was found in the amygdala, known as the emotional center of the brain.
The big question has always been, if the brains of gay men are
different, or feminized, as earlier research suggests, says Dr. Eric
Vilain, professor of human genetics at University of California Los
Angeles, then is it just limited to sexual preference or are there
other regions that are gender atypical in gay males? For the first
time, in this study it looks like there are regions of the brain not
directly involved in sexuality that seem to be feminized in gay males.

Vilain, who studies the genetic factors behind sexuality and sexual
orientation, notes that it may turn out that the brains of gay men
possess only some 'feminized' structures, while retaining some
masculine ones, and this is reflected in how they act on their
sexuality. We know from studies that men, regardless of their sexual
orientation, retain masculine characteristics when it comes to their
sexual behavior, he says. Both gay and straight men, for example,
tend to prefer younger partners, in contrast to women, who gravitate
toward older partners. Most men are also more likely than women to
engage in casual sex, and to be aroused by visual stimuli. So I
expect that some regions of the brain will remain masculine even in
gay men, says Vilain. For something as complex as sexual orientation,
it's no surprise that everything from genes to gender to environment
may play a role in ultimately determining your perfect partner.

It's good news and bad. Bad news is that the only gay children would be from
liberal parents and those who would resist science when it comes to
reproduction.

Good news is that Gay parents would also be able to use the same science to
alter the gene to produce gay children from the straight gene. Let's see where
science would take us from here.

I don't think we should hit the genetic panic button yet!
