g_b REMINDER: Bombay Dost Sunday High: 23 Nov '08: Film Screenings

2008-11-21 Thread Vikram Phukan

Hello Everyone,

The next Sunday High will feature two all-time camp classics. Both
films are essentially queer masterpieces that crossed over to the
mainstream and acquired cult followings, Rocky Horror through the
midnight screenings which led to it becoming the longest running
theatrical release in film history, Hedwig though hundreds of spin-
off rock gigs that proliferated across the world. These are films
about expressing your true self, no matter how flamboyant or quirky
it may be - so get your dancing shoes on and join us for the Bombay
Dost Cult Musical Double Bill.

Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
100 min English - with subtitles
directed by Jim Sharman with Susan Sanrandon, Tim Curry
What do a Transylvanian transvestite, a cryogenically-preserved
motorbiker and a Frankenstein's monster wearing golden underpants all
have in common? They're all crucial parts of this comedy cult classic
which is at once hysterical, indispensable and truly disturbing.
Innocent young lovers Brad and Janet are stranded when their car
breaks down, so they are forced to seek refuge in the castle of the
bizarre Dr. Frankenfurter, who is having a gathering of some kind...
What ensues is an unforgettable night of music and madness where,
like a circus act, you never know what's going to come next. By the
end of the night, fantasies will be realities, men will be women and
everything will be explained - or will it? ✒ IMDB

Hedwig And The Angry Inch (2001)
95 min English - with subtitles
directed by John Cameron Mitchell with John Cameron Mitchell, Rob
Campbell, Michael Pitt
Hedwig, born a boy named Hansel in East Berlin, fell in love with an
American G.I. and underwent a sex-change operation in order to marry
him and flee to the West. Unfortunately, nothing worked out quite as
it was supposed to - years later, Hedwig is leading her rock band on
a tour of the U.S., telling her life story through a series of
concerts at Bilgewater Inn seafood restaurants. Her tour dates
coincide with those of arena-rock star Tommy Gnosis, a wide-eyed boy
who once loved Hedwig... but then left with all her songs. ✒ IMDB

BONUS SHORT: Un Chant d'Amour [A Song of Love] (1950)
26 min Silent
directed by Jean Genet with Coco Le Martiniquais, Lucien Sénémaud
Two prisoners in complete isolation, separated by the thick brick
walls, and desperately in need of human contact, devise a most
unusual kind of communication. ✒ IMDB

BONUS SHORT: Matroos [Sailor] (1998)
16 min Silent
directed by Bavo Defurne with Joram Schurmans
A teenager adores his sailor friend. He dreams about the exotic
countries, marvelous starry skies and the inevitable homesickness
that would bring his friend back to him. In a colorful series of
mythical referential images, his fragile dreams get so unreal, that
the enthusiasm for seeing his friend again turns into anxiousness. ✒

There is always a wink and a nudge, but I am not saying anything about any
one out loud, as that would open me up to being sued for defamation. But as
they say, samajhdaar ko ishara hee kaafi hai...

And ishara... is also about opininions. Like for example, the first gay kiss
on screen (Dostana) not withstanding, my personal opinion is that John
Abharam is not a good kisser.

Best,
Aditya B
