Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham get Best Couple at the Nokia 15th Annual
Star Screen Awards. Gay Mumbai sees it as a sign

It was a first in the history of Indian cinema. A film featuring two men as
a gay couple (albeit fake) bagged the Nokia 15th Annual Star Star Screen
Award as the Best Couple.

John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan won the golden statuette from under the
noses of Aamir Khan and Asin, Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan, Katrina Kaif
and Akshay Kumar and Kaif and Salman Khan.

Interestingly, the award was handed out by the other halves of the two
men-actors Rai and Bipasha Basu, who giggled like school girls over their
men being called a 'couple', insisting they "don't mind at all".

"It's an unexpected award to get, and feels a bit strange. I am glad to be
here and I do miss Abhishek, especially his chest hair," joked Abraham,
stroking Khan's shaved chest, inciting hoots of laughter.

Amidst ribald jokes made by hosts Sajid Khan and Shreyas Talpade, much of
the evening was painted pink. The two hosts vied for Abraham's attention,
Khan dressed in his yellow trunks for a bit, and the hosts even made a few
presentations dressed in drag. And yes, it could've been cheesy but it
actually was a lot of fun. Perhaps it's light hearted banter but makes one
wonder, is this the tip of the iceberg? Are things really changing in
Bollywood?

"It is an achievement that a film like Dostana is redefining what
couple-hood means," says Malini Dabbas who works in the non-profit sector on
issues of health, gender and sexuality.

Vikram of Gay Bombay, a self funded organisation, says Dostana is an
exception but not the rule, adding, "One will always have to deal with
stereotypes. It's the spirit in which Dostana was done that is inspiring.
Not only did it take up the subject but that it did it so well. I do not
expect Bollywood to a Brokeback Mountain but this comedy not malicious.

"Bollywood has to go to catch up with the prevailing discourses on alternate
sexuality, however, they've made a good start with Fire, and now Dostana,"
says activist Lesley Esteves, who also believes even though the film invited
people to poke fun at stereotypes of gay men, it managed to do so without
offending many gay people. "I'm thrilled that Abhishek and John won the best
couple, and the style with which the award was bestowed on them was even
more exciting. I would love to see two women bag the award someday soon."

One cannot assume applause at an award function translates into a gay
revolution-yet a small step in a homophobic society.

The Winter issue of Trikone Magazine is out! Grab your

*NOW!*

*What's New?*

Well – the pages in full Technicolour are still there. We've added several
new columns from contributors in Oakland, Bangalore and Britain and a new
regular page featuring coming out stories. The global desi LGBT diaspora is
a varied bunch but you might be surprised by how similar our experiences can
be in many ways.
What's In It?

In this issue find out how the passage of a ban on gay marriage in
California may have led to the unintended and unwanted (by the conservative
right-wing) birth of a new, grass-roots led, vocal LGBT civil rights. We
talked to some of the leaders of the new movement to find out whether the
energy will last. Also, read an interview with our Person of the Year –
Sunil Babu Pant the first openly gay MP anywhere in South Asia.
In addition read eye- witness accounts and see exclusive pictures from the
first Gay sporting event in South Asia, the Solidarity Gaymes held in Sri
Lanka in Dec 08. Be it coverage of LGBT news from around the world, or
articles about hot issues such as the backlash against prop 8 or this issue
has it all! And for all those comic aficionados, there is the new excerpt
from the second Pride High comic featuring our favourite desi lesbian
superhero.

g_b "Pyaar Do Pyaar Lo" - Jaanbaaz

2009-01-18 Thread Tintin Mumbai India
Hi Guys
Today, being lazy, I was watching TV and while flipping the channels, I
stopped at "Zee Action" where the Song "Pyaar Do - Pyaar Lo" from the Movie
"Jaanbaaz" was being played.

What made me to stop at it, was its theme and the era it was picturised
in...

Surely when the song was picturised, the time was to show the female skin as
much as possible...
but opposite to that, the song was totally an Eye Treat for Gay and Girls...

During the whole sequence, In Background many well toned guys (they were
looking whites) guys were dancing in bare minimum cloths.
Infact I should not say they were wearing cloth.
They were wearing kind of G Strings (Yes, G Strings as when they did Cart
Wheel or Jumped showing their back, their butt cheeks were clearly visible).
Just to cover their crotch bulges and butt cheeks, they had additional layer
of febric, which was leaves like thing, made of some febric.

Shame on today's Bollywood movies, which are nowhere close to this...

Abhay

Dear colleagues,

*Missing pieces - HIV Related Needs of Sexual Minorities in India (UNDP
India) - * A National Consultation on the HIV related needs and concerns of
Sexual Minorities in India was held on October 24 and 25, 2008 at the India
International Centre, New Delhi. The participants at the consultation
discussed issues related to Men having Sex with Men (MSM) and Transgender
(TG), as well as the status of programmes and advocacy activities within the
third phase of the National AIDS Control Programme (NACP‐III). They
subsequently suggested action in strategic areas where UNDP can provide
support to the National AIDS Control Organization (NACO).
