Since the complainant hadn't signed on Vijay as his lawyer, Vijay had no standing in the case, but we thought it was worth going anyway to see what happened and if necessary see if the judge would listen to Vijay's statement that Shehzaad was a habitual offender and that there were others who would be filing cases against him (so far no one has come forward to do this, but we're still hoping. If you know anyone willing to help, get in touch with me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]). Luckily we didn't have to do this. Shehzaad seemed quite confident in court, he had engaged a local lawyer and was with a woman who might have been his wife. When his case was called it was almost comical 0 suddenly he started limping heavily as he approached the magistrate. He seemed to be appealing for clemency from the judge on the grounds that the stolen items were all recovered by the complainant and that he, Shehzaad, had fractured his legs and was in deep pain. The judge didn't seem too impressed. He told Shehzaad that he seemed to be able to stand on his two feet quite well, but Shehzaad kept insisting and it looked like the judge would agree to defer things till he had a medical exam. This was a problem for us since we couldn't keep hanging around all day. But then a constable walked in, saluted the judge and said he came from the Andheri railway police and they had identified Shehzaad from the list as someone wanted by them for impersonating a police officer (something we know that Shehzaad has done in the past)! That did it for Shehzaad - no chance of bail today, though he's being produced again before a magistrate in Bandra. Vijay was of the opinion that he may not get bail for a few days, because of this Andheri police intervention. This gives us a few more days to try and get people who have been blackmailed by him in the past to get in touch with us and to consider filing a case. So if this has happened to you or you know someone it has happened to, PLEASE get in touch with me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Ideally we would like you to file a case (with the help of ICHRL), but even if you are willing to talk, anonymously, to the media that would help since we are trying to get some of the papers to do a big piece on this.
