Trailblazers redefine sexuality

Sunanda Kumar

Desirable, devilish and daring, the women who changed the face of sexuality as we know it!

Zeenat Aman

Few women have been able to do what Zeenat Aman did. Her brazen sexuality in Satyam Shivam Sundaram burnt up screens across India as she slithered about in a strategically wrapped sari.

While some might argue that her sexiness was too in-your-face, it must also be said that she was a trailblazer who couldn’t care two hoots about what people thought of her.

Demi Moore

Demi Moore exuded a subtle boyish charm in Ghost that many have tried to imitate since, but not succeeded the way she did. Her petite frame, ‘bowl cut’ hairstyle and porcelain skin combined with her powerpacked performance made for a combustible mix. Up until then, few brunettes were perceived to be sex symbols.

The raven-haired beauty has since donned several avatars; the stripper, the combat officer, the object of desire and has carried off each role with sensuous élan.

Britney Spears

‘Hit me baby, one more time’ blew the nation away with Britney Spears personifying every guy’s sexual fantasy - the naughty schoolgirl. Her plaits, short plaid skirt and midriff-baring tie-knot white shirt changed the cliché that sex symbols only dress in barely-there flamboyant outfits.

Spears created a huge controversy with her subsequent albums - all featuring her in practically nothing and had women’s groups around the world campaigning against her. They all claimed she was ruining the youth with her raunchy act.

Gwen Stefani

The punk alternative rock scene never had a star as sexy and bizarre as Gwen Stefani. Everything about her - the platinum blonde hair, milky white skin, psychedelic bindi and wacky clothes created an out-there aura that was still very mainstream considering her smashing body.

While Stefani has been accused of imitating Madonna, she herself has had several women emulate her, Pink being the leader of the pack.

Smita Patil

Her glistening skin, chiselled face and voluptuous figure are not the only reason why Smita Patil inspired a generation of young men to watch ‘art’ flicks. It was her smouldering eyes and mindblowing histrionics that really got to everyone. Smita Patil exuded a raw sexuality that seeped into her every performance.

Adding to her sensuality, Patil played a mentally troubled character in Arth (presumably inspired by Parveen Babi’s life) which played on men’s protective instincts.

Jennifer Lopez

Nobody has brought Latin beauty into mainstream pop culture the way Jennifer Lopez did. Flaunting her ample booty, J.Lo sashayed onto our television screens wearing big hoops, thigh-high boots and big voluminous hair - all very trademark of Latinas.

Lopez’s love life became the centre of focus for a while, overshadowing her musical talent. Her loss was Beyonce Knowles gain, who was initially accused of being a J.Lo wannabe.

Lucy Liu

Asian erotica took form in the petite frame of Lucy Liu who bust onto the scene with the hit show Ally McBeal. Up until then, Asian women were reduced to doing ethnic roles in Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan films and could never really hold their own.

Liu changed all that and successfully made the Asian woman an object of ultimate desire. Her wicked expressions, taut and diminutive body and bad-ass attitude makes her the ultimate dominatrix.

Madonna

She will always be the trailblazer who showed the world what a woman truly is. Her outspoken sexuality is the stuff legends are made of. Madonna’s trampy look with dishevelled blonde hair, smeared bright red lipstick and provocative clothing made the bold and brazen look desirable.

She has publicly explored various aspects of herself and has never shied away from her true self. Madonna’s care-a-damn attitude is what makes her truly the ultimate sex symbol.

Sinead O Connor

Bald became sexy, thanks to the doe-eyed Sinead O Conner. When she first burst onto the scene, many reporters asked about her shaved head. She responded that when she recorded her first album, the label wanted to doll her up and make her into a sex symbol like Sheila E. She responded by cutting all of her hair off. From the beginning this was part of O'Connor's appeal.

But a series of defiant protests against political and religious tyranny that soon followed her initial success left a bad taste by many fans mouths. She was branded a troublemaker.

Lucy Lawless

Muscles were never so sexy before. Xena - The Warrior Princess has sparked off many a male fantasy with her brown leather outfit, armed with her mighty Chakram.

At 5’10’’, the athletic Lucy Lawless’ tall and broad frame is definitely not the norm when it comes to sex symbols, yet the beauty from New Zealand has managed to create a cult following the world over.
