[Bug lto/77821] New: C++ binary size increase or LTO not working?

2016-10-02 Thread tulipawn at gmail dot com
https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=77821

Bug ID: 77821
   Summary: C++ binary size increase or LTO not working?
   Product: gcc
   Version: 7.0
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P3
 Component: lto
  Assignee: unassigned at gcc dot gnu.org
  Reporter: tulipawn at gmail dot com
  Target Milestone: ---

I've just revisited the compilation from issue #69082 and all's fine and good
but I can't seem to produce a similarly sized binary as in the past:

$ du -h ufo-gcc*
1716ufo-gcc4.9-lto
2404ufo-gcc4.9-nonlto
2384ufo-gcc6-lto?
2348ufo-gcc7-lto?
2340ufo-gcc7-nonlto

In case it's simply about LTO not being used, the regular code is actually
getting smaller.
For 4.9 it was enough to put `-flto` among C(XX)FLAGS but now, also passing
those as LDFLAGS to the latter gcc's doesn't help. What gives?

2016-10-02 Thread segher at gcc dot gnu.org
https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=77820

Bug ID: 77820
   Summary: A jump threading opportunity with conditionals
   Product: gcc
   Version: unknown
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: P3
 Component: tree-optimization
  Assignee: unassigned at gcc dot gnu.org
  Reporter: segher at gcc dot gnu.org
  Target Milestone: ---

Consider the following code:

===
void g(void);

void f(long a, long b, long c, long d, int x)
{
int t;
if (x)
t = a < b;
else
t = c < d;
if (t)
g();
}
===

On aarch64 we generate: (it is worse on PowerPC, but this is shorter code)

===
f:
cbz w4, .L2
cmp x0, x1
csetw0, lt
cbnzw0, .L6
.L1:
ret
.p2align 3
.L2:
cmp x2, x3
csetw0, lt
cbz w0, .L1
.L6:
b   g
===

while if jump threading was a bit smarter we could generate:

===
f:
cbz w4, .L2
cmp x0, x1
blt .L3
.L1:
ret
.p2align 3
.L2:
cmp x2, x3
bge .L1
.L3:
b   g
===

(i.e., do the "if (t)" in both branches of the first "if").

[Bug c/77817] New: -Wimplicit-fallthrough: cpp directive renders FALLTHRU comment ineffective

2016-10-02 Thread jim at meyering dot net
https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=77817

Bug ID: 77817
   Summary: -Wimplicit-fallthrough: cpp directive renders FALLTHRU
comment ineffective
   Product: gcc
   Version: 7.0
Status: UNCONFIRMED
  Severity: minor
  Priority: P3
 Component: c
  Assignee: unassigned at gcc dot gnu.org
  Reporter: jim at meyering dot net
  Target Milestone: ---

Normally, adding a comment like /* FALLTHRU */ works fine to mark a switch case
that is intended to fall through. But if a cpp directive appears in the
vicinity of that comment, the comment becomes ineffective and we get the
warning anyway.

Here is a minimal example (without the "#undef", that comment *does* suppress
the warning):

int
foo (int x)
{
  switch (x)
{
case 1:
  x = 3;
#undef X
  /* fallthrough */
case 2:
  x = 4;
}
  return x;
}
$ gcc -c -O -Wimplicit-fallthrough /t/ft.c
/t/ft.c: In function ‘foo’:
/t/ft.c:20:9: warning: this statement may fall through [-Wimplicit-fallthrough]
   x = 3;
   ~~^~~
/t/ft.c:23:5: note: here
 case 2:
 ^~~~

The above was compiled with yesterday's GCC 7:
  gcc version 7.0.0 20161001 (experimental) (GCC)

I encountered an actual instance of this in gnulib's vasnprintf.c:
http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/gnulib.git/tree/lib/vasnprintf.c#n4823

Jack,

Did you get any feedback from Apple?

[Bug tree-optimization/59650] Inefficient vector assignment code

2016-10-02 Thread glisse at gcc dot gnu.org
https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=59650

--- Comment #2 from Marc Glisse  ---
Actually, we have a regression, BIT_INSERT_EXPR causes a spurious warning

a.c:13:10: warning: 'tmp' is used uninitialized in this function
[-Wuninitialized]
   tmp[0] = v[0];
   ~~~^~
And we don't vectorize any function. We would vectorize the second if tmp was a
global variable. The main difference I see since 4.8 is that 2 of the 4 movs in
set1 got merged to an unaligned mov.
just for anyone finding this later, note this has been raised at the level of
the C++ Standard - http://wg21.link/p0375r0 - with the conclusion being:
> EWG pointed out that most enumerations are exhaustive, and
> we want to be annotating the exception, not the norm.
> However, there wasn’t much appetite for a “non-exhaustive”
> annotation, either; implementers were of the opinion that
I suspect that "most enumerations are exhaustive" is an overgeneralisation that
only holds for some people you could ask, but hey.
