[Bug debug/33861] Debugging info for C++ template parameters is incorrect

2007-10-22 Thread nathan at gcc dot gnu dot org

--- Comment #2 from nathan at gcc dot gnu dot org 2007-10-22 14:32 ---
the testcase is valid. [14.3.2]/2 essentially gives it as an example. A
literal '' is optional in this case (para 1).

para 5 tells us that array to pointer decay happens here, and GCC internally
represents that as CAST_EXPR (type, ADDR_EXPR (array_obj)). It could have
used ADDR_EXPR (ARRAY_REF (array_obj, 0)), but it doesn't.  That alternative
is equally invalid as a non-type template argument.

explicitly writing '(char *)name' in the source is ill-formed though.

[Bug c++/32658] Supposedly illegal conversion compiles without errors

2007-08-01 Thread nathan at gcc dot gnu dot org

--- Comment #5 from nathan at gcc dot gnu dot org 2007-08-01 19:42 ---
The standard is unclear about exactly why this is ill-defined. Does the
conversion operator take part in overload resolution (and then be rejected, if
it is selected), or is it never entered into the overload set.

I shall query CWG.

--- Comment #4 from nathan at gcc dot gnu dot org 2006-03-03 12:49 ---
I find it a surprise that when not optimizing, the compiler has examined the
printf string and determined it can replace the printf with a puts call. This
seems more than mere constant folding.

[Bug c++/25855] template specialisation not always found (partial ordering)

2006-01-19 Thread nathan at gcc dot gnu dot org

--- Comment #9 from nathan at gcc dot gnu dot org 2006-01-19 14:22 ---
The bug appears to be not in the deduction machinery, but in the instantiation
machinery. In all cases we end up calling _Z8qCompareIcEiPKT_S2_, but the body
of that function differs! Using the example in comment #4, we get a return
value of 1. If either of the two alterations are done, we get a return value
of 4.

Another difference in the assembly is that the unmodified code of comment #4
contains an instantiation of _Z8qCompareIccEiPKT_PKT0_, whereas the other two
do not.

[Bug c++/25855] template specialisation not always found (partial ordering)

2006-01-19 Thread nathan at gcc dot gnu dot org

--- Comment #11 from nathan at gcc dot gnu dot org 2006-01-19 14:43 ---
comment #10 is incorrect. Regardless of the validity/invalidity of the code,
the fact that comment#4 shows us producing different code depending on the
ordering of the template decls indicates a bug. (I also fail to see the
relevancy of DR214, as there are no undeduceable template parameters, nor any
reference arguments.)

[Bug c++/22136] [4.1/4.2 regression] Rejects old-style using declaration

2006-01-15 Thread nathan at gcc dot gnu dot org

--- Comment #11 from nathan at gcc dot gnu dot org 2006-01-15 14:04 ---
What's happening is that we parse IT::B as a type specifier and then squirrel
away a preparsed template type specifier, but because IT::B is a
non-dependent type, the preparsed specifier becomes simply ::B, losing the base
path information.

I think the bug is that the preparsed template id is saved regardless of the
check_dependency, is_declaration and type_p flags. I spent some time looking
at this and got confused. I really must allocate some time to look again.

simplest test case

This appears to be tickling a latent bug in the dwarf code. Before my patch I
discover that the structure's dwarf information appears to be a child of
comp_unit, whereas afterwards it's a child of a namespace. the latter seems
correct to me -- I am investigating.

[Bug c++/25386] New: packed structs

2005-12-13 Thread nathan at gcc dot gnu dot org
g++.dg/ext/packed3.C fails on default packed targets.

I don't think this is the case. The questionable code (from the test
case) really is

struct Unpacked { int i; };
struct  __attribute__ ((packed)) Packed
{
  char c;
  int i;
  Unpacked u;
};

and the test expects that you cannot bind Packed::u to Unpacked (error
expected), but that you can bind Packed::u::i to int (not even a
warning expected). No warning is expected on the definition of Packed's
u member.
Not exactly. My problems are

(a) the above mentioned inconsistency in allowing binding to the whole
structure but not to its members, and

(b) on a default-packed target (or with -fpack-struct) getting reverse
behavior in allowing binding to Packed::u but not allowing binding to
Packed::u::i.

% ah, I think that warning should only be given on non-default-packed
 arches. Is this your problem Jan?

I think the warning should be given only if the base class does not
itself have the minimum alignment for the artchitecture. (So that you
would get the warning on a system that was packed by default if you used
a base class which was explicitly aligned on a wider boundary.)

[Bug target/25126] New: -msoft-float does not work

2005-11-27 Thread nathan at gcc dot gnu dot org
The -msoft-float option is accepted on i86, and causes calls to the soft fp
library routines. however those routines are not built so one ends up with
link errors.

I don't mind if soft-float is rejected, but I think it should be if it's not
supposed to work :)

2005-11-20 Thread nathan at gcc dot gnu dot org

--- Comment #8 from nathan at gcc dot gnu dot org 2005-11-20 19:29 ---
I've come to the conclusion that my 21166 patch was overzealous. What I now
think is that packing a decl always changes its type except for one case
described below. Even when the field's placment happens to work out right, the
decl should remain packed (it's just an accident of placement, which is
fragile).

The exception should be were BITS_PER_UNIT == TYPE_ALIGN (TREE_TYPE (field)).
Packing such a field is a no-op, so should not be reflected in the type system.
 We can place this check when we first attempt to set DECL_PACKED.

I think this is sufficient to fix the original problem 21166 was trying to
solve.

[Bug libstdc++/20647] Wrong typeid for incomplete types

2005-11-06 Thread nathan at gcc dot gnu dot org

--- Comment #10 from nathan at gcc dot gnu dot org 2005-11-06 17:54 ---
A * is not a reference to an incomplete type, but a pointer to one, so 5.2.8.4
does not apply. I'm fairly certain the correct output should be 'OK'. The two
type id objects should have different addresses (one should be weak, one should
be local static). The typeid strings should have the same address (and be
emitted weak)

the overflow happens in the static constant assignment 'int b = 0x8000'
assigns an unsigned long to an int, and overflows. The int_cst as b's
DCL_INITIAL has the overflow flag set. I rejected clearing the overflow flag
at that point, because I was worried about other overflow paths on the case
label expression (although I failed to excite any).
