            Bug ID: 87050
           Summary: Bump wwwdocs to html5
           Product: gcc
           Version: unknown
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: enhancement
          Priority: P3
         Component: web
Assignee: unassigned at gcc dot gnu.org
Reporter: jb at gcc dot gnu.org
  Target Milestone: ---

Currently the GCC website is "XHTML 1.0 Transitional". This specification has
been superseded in favor of the latest HTML version, currently 5.2 (see
https://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/ ). Reasons to update

- Easier to hand-edit, e.g. in many cases no need for closing tags, and in
general more forgiving parsing.

- XHTML, and in particular XHTML delivered as text/html, is a technological
dead end. People will only get less and less familiar with it.

For a relatively simple set of pages like the GCC wwwdocs that doesn't use any
particularly exotic features, HTML5 is more or less completely backwards
compatible with XHTML 1.0 (for details, see https://www.w3.org/TR/html5-diff/
). So apart from the headers, little work ought to be needed for the conversion
itself.
