I'll repeat here what I said during the discussion: I'd like to say
how delighted I am in the quality of the discussion here, on the
sensitive topic of one of our own (albeit one of our own who seems to
have no enemies in the project, as opposed to some of us more prickly
types who have gotten on many folks' nerves and/or stepped on their
toes).

Much as I like Sarah, I don't think she qualifies as notable to the

Re: [Gendergap] My second Wikipedia article: Sarah Stierch

2013-01-21 Thread Sarah Stierch

This is really one of the weirdest things ever. I have to admit.

I also remember when Danese Cooper wrote an email to this list
complaining about her article and I rewrote it and it's never had a
problem since. Sadly, I can't write my own article. ;)

I'm flattered anyone would even consider writing about me. I'm also not
surprised that it's OrangeMike who has nominated it for deletion.

By the time I hit 16 technically I had met notability guidelines, but, I
don't expect anyone to go digging into my past that deep. If anyone
wants a list of reliable sources independent of the subject, let me
know. I have coverage about me dating back to when I was in my early
20's. That probably sounds crazy, but, they don't call me DJ Sarah
Vain (I DJ'd for 10 years and promoted concerts nationally for longer)
for no reason. ;) I even have content about me that was published in
old punk rock fanzines that are notable from the 90's someplace. Ha ha
ha ha.

I can also provide you a list of 10 other people you probably know who
deserve their articles deleted if I do. ;)

I have to say, the sad thing is watching people nominate you for
deletion and not even bother actually researching you. And yeah, as
Carol said, there are a lot worse people out there with coverage. I
actually had to nominate Alolita Sharma's article after I tried to
improve it for hours on end, because of lack of reliable coverage. So
it's not like I don't know what I'm talking about.

I suppose watching myself get nominated for deletion just makes me want
to say try to improve before you delete. But, when I graduated high
school I was voted most likely to be serial killer, the US president,
and the class clown. So.. whatever ;)

Ha ha. I think the only thing I have from that is from some little tiny
flier that went out announcing who was named what in high school. So no.

Here's one if you can dig it up: My father and I are featured in the
book Awkward Family Photos. If you can find that one I'll buy you a

I find my thoughts about this heading in so many different directions,
I'm not really sure where to start.

Of all the people on Wikipedia, I would have thought that people on this
list would be intensely aware of the hazards of having a biographical
article about oneself on Wikipedia, particularly one that will likely be
little-watched, and for whom huge numbers of editors will have significant
conflicts of interest in editing. This is particularly true of articles
about women, it seems, and especially women of borderline notability. This
is a target painted on Sarah's back. She may not realise it yet, but
having spent a good chunk of the last several years dealing with vandals
and trolls, she's a really juicy target.

Indeed, one could easily say that the creator of this article had a
significant conflict of interest in writing an article about someone who is
an advisor to the author's non-profit, AND who has made significant edits
to the author's article. Imagine if Jimmy Wales went around writing
biographical articles about the WMF Board's advisory council members - we
all know what digestive products would hit the oscillating ventilator. (Of
course, the major variable is the quality of writing - I am happy to grant
that it's well written.) Conflict of interest is already a very major
battleground on the project, although we've not really discussed it much on
 this list.

I'm sorry but I think this was a bad idea. It seriously increases the
risk that other wikimedians will find themselves with an unwanted biography
that will be pretty well impossible to remove from the project. That might
be fine for some, but it's a significant concern for a lot of others, and I
know of several wikimedians who are similarly borderline notable but who go
out of their way to avoid media or turn down speaking engagements because
they do not want a Wikipedia article about them. I'm afraid this low bar
to notability is so unhealthy that it's had an effect on our own
 community.
