wikimedia movement? We did that for Coyau in France.

Very sorry to hear about their passing.

I've been involved with handling the 'administrative side' for a few 
Wikimedians from the Dutch community we lost last year, and the people that 
handle the en-Wikipedia page saw my edits and reached out to me and asked if I 
could write a small in memorial about two of them who also were internationally 
active: the team is quite pro-active in this. The in memorials were published 
in the English Signpost.
Also, since a few years Jimmy mentions the people we lost as a movement in his 
speech on Wikimania (after an email on wikimedia-l, and maybe other places, to 
share the usernames of the people we lost in the past year) and we even had a 
small memorial site at Wikimania 2019. Very nicely done, under a tree, in the 
grass field next to the main building. 

I guess every community needs to find it's own way in this, the en-wp page is 
imho a good point to start if you would like to create a page for your lost 
ones.

I hear you. Excellent point. Maybe there is a way to do both, but in
different ways. One place as you suggested in most direct context specific,
community tied and original language of person, with one that maybe
connects the movement's wide losses and serves as appreciation to all of
them? If Meta still sounds as wrong (understanding that some experience it
also as toxic) maybe a new space can be established as part of
WikiSpore.org? (maybe with subdomain RiP)
It is not an easy topic to discuss at the time at all and let alone at the
time of loss, so I would hope this can be considered as a mid-term
incentive.

So sad to hear that Sarah/Slim Virgin has passed. I wish I could leave my
condolences. I wasn't aware of her until she invited me to join the Gender
Gap Task Force, but from then on she was someone whose take on Wikipedia
and Wikipedians - including myself - was important to me. I especially
appreciate the hard work she put into improving the articles' and the
community's gender representation.

is a project they have never gone to, where they are mostly unknown, and it
is disconnected in almost all cases from the project where the deceased
editor worked and called home. Their home project(s) or projects where they
have made significant contributions are the best place to recognize them.
There are a few Wikimedians who have worked at what may be considered the

recognized, in addition, on Meta or through a blog post or similar.

Certainly, most of the contributions of our deceased colleagues are, in
fact, preserved forever in the edit histories of the content areas in which
