Re: [VOTE] Apache Ambari 1.2.2-incubating RC1

2013-04-09 Thread Mahadev Konar
+1 on the release.

One minor nit:

target/ directory is included in the source with rat.txt file.

Not a blocker for the release. We should probably add it in our docs
to make sure we ignore that next time.

thanks

This is an interesting idea. It does, however, assume that the person
who starts a thread is able to be sufficiently neutral to represent the
whole story, rather than their own particular take on it. Such
summarisation is something of an art.

Ahh, if only that advice that was given over a year ago were followed. I'm

What I am more worried about is where some new procedure or policy is enacted

We'd be fine if it weren't for a small number of participants "bulldozing" --
dominating a discussion by sheer volume of email.

IMO, it's time to enshrine this advice from Doug on the "email tips" page at
:

http://markmail.org/message/viluvkt6x2dhj4iv

Please do not feel obliged to answer every response to your messages here.
That does not scale well. There are a lot of people who read this list.
Each message sent is equivalent to taking the floor in a meeting with all
of these people in the room. Please pause to consider that before
responding or folks will start to leave this room.

A best practice on a list with this many members is to respond
thoughtfully on each thread just once per day. Try to keep your responses
short, sticking to the points which are most important to you. Then wait,
giving folks who might only read the list once a day a chance to respond
to each of your messages. Use this time to gauge the general response of
the community. Then try to respond to the list as a whole rather than
individually to each member of the list.

It would be an interesting experiment to run general@ on a listserv
which throttled authors to one email per thread per day. :)

Or to create a "bulldozer detector" tool which parses an mbox and prints
summary data for each thread:

* authors ranked by message count
* authors ranked by word count

Good idea, I'd even ask for a summary at regular intervals, i.e. when
meaningful progress has been made in the discussion.

I'll also add that the shorter emails have the more chances of being
read, at least on this side of my screen.

And proposals for new things work much better on wiki pages, with
comments here and wiki edits as the discussion progresses.

Re: [PROPOSAL] TL;DR editors

2013-04-09 Thread Benson Margulies
I assume that you will take that role for this thread.

Some people might claim that this is my job in general. However, my level
of enthusiasm for trying to sweep up after the elephant depends on the
elephant. I think that the harder case is the one in which there is,
apparently, no consensus. What we'd all like, I think, is to wind down the
thread rather than leaving it hanging. However, it's not trivial to decide
when we've learned that there's no consensus, and when all we've learned is
that everyone is just busy with real life.

[PROPOSAL] TL;DR editors

2013-04-09 Thread Alan Cabrera
The amount of email on this list has grown beyond ridiculousness. I propose a
new required process on this list whereby anyone who starts a new thread is
required to diligently monitor it and post a summary at the end. The person
would assume an editor role for that thread.

[SUMMARY] Incubator structure (was Re: Vote on personal matters: majority vote
vs consensus)

The joyous occasion whereby all participants hold that their feelings have been
honestly considered and a consensus has been arrived upon. Here is the gist of
the common view:

fugiat nulla pariatur. Excepteur sint occaecat cupidatat non proident, sunt in
culpa qui officia deserunt mollit anim id est laborum.

This way, those of us who don't have the time to read threads whose post counts
grow passed one hundred aren't on the hook to read all the drivel in order to
keep up. The summary must be kept at most a five sentence paragraph; please,
no Henry James like prose.

It also has the added effect of keeping people who aren't committed to seeing
an issue through from starting a thread to begin with.

Thoughts?

Alan
