+1, renaming before incubation makes things much easier.

I think it's fine for the incoming podling to use a
https://issues.apache.org/jira/projects/PODLINGNAMESEARCH ticket for
that name change, to avoid having to do that again later.

Agreed. Is there anyone against doing both a VOTE and a PODLINGNAMESEARCH in
parallel, with the understanding that even upon a successful VOTE, the Infra
will not be done until the name is changed? This will prevent the (potential)
podling from having to go thru the rigamarole of changing their name if the are
NOT accepted.

Dave, is that OK?

FTR, I agree, which is obvious since I am someone who frequently points out the
concern w/ many podlings graduating w/o a clear (IMHO) understanding of the
Apache Way. And I know that the general concern was one reason and rationale
for the Petri proposal as well. Also, FTR, I lately have not been encouraging
potential projects to join the ASF, but this one seems well suited, and is one
reason why I agreed to Champion it.

I just wanted to ensure that this particular podling proposal was not being
unduly focused upon, for whatever reason, consciously or unconsciously.

Cheers.

All recent podlings have been asked to make sure that their name is suitable
before joining incubation. If we don’t do this Infra may insist that a posting
name search be done before enter incubation, given that can sometime takes
months, I don’t think that’s a workable solution. This has been discussed
before on this list.

The naming was not the focusing upon part which I was referring to... sorry if
that was not obvious based on what I quoted and what I wrote.

Petri is intended to help existing open source project communities decide
within their community if the Apache Way and the ASF is right for their
community. The community can choose to do this publicly or privately. There are
three possible results: become a TLP, incubate, or something else. It is not
designed to replace the Incubator.

We are all volunteers and need to make our own choices.

I think that all of us bring some biases from our experience. Perhaps the
Incubator should discuss the proposal process and score which aspects of the
Apache Way are in good shape vs which are more of a concern.

Some areas;
- Few active developers.
- Single company development.
- Licensing issues in the code base
- Licensing issues with dependencies

[VOTE] Project proposal - Apache AgensGraph Extension

2020-04-15 Thread Jim Jagielski
We would like to propose AgensGraph Extension as an Apache incubator project.
As such, I am calling a VOTE.

The AgensGraph Extension provides an extension for PostgreSQL to give the users
the ability to leverage graph database on top of the existing relational
database with minimal effort. The basic principle of the project is to create
single storage that can handle both relational and graph model data so that the
users can use the standard ANSI SQL along with openCypher
(http://www.opencypher.org), the Graph query language.

The proposal can be found here:

   o https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/INCUBATOR/AgensGraphExtension

Please cast your vote. I will leave the polls open for at least 72 hours.

PS: Please note that before the podling enters the Incubator, assuming a
positive vote response, the actual project name will be changed to something
acceptable as determined by VP Brand.

PPS: If you are interested in mentoring, please let us know. We are looking for
additional mentors...

Cheers!
Jim
