Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Celeborn(Incubating) 0.4.0-incubating-rc4

2024-01-21 Thread Cheng Pan
Xuan wo, thanks for voting and verification.

The provided gist indicates you are using Java 21 with the command
`sbt compile` to build the source code, which does not match the
assumption.

> :) sbt compile
> [info] welcome to sbt 1.9.4 (N/A Java 21.0.2)

The attached link in the voting mail provides the System Requirements
and build guidelines

> The SBT build documentation is available at
> https://celeborn.apache.org/docs/latest/developers/sbt/.

> ... supports Scala 2.11/2.12/2.13 and Java 8/11/17.

In short, please use Java 8 or 11(we use 8 for releasing) to build the
source code with the command `./build/make-distribution.sh
--sbt-enabled --release`.

Thanks,
Cheng Pan

2023-09-19 Thread Cheng Pan
Hi PJ Fanning,

Thanks for pointing out this issue, it was considered but seems broken
recently, unfortunately.

The proposed NOTICE and LICENSE files are under [1], would you mind taking a
look? If it's OK, I’m going to investigate and fix the packaging issue then.

Given it’s a license issue, I suppose this RC has failed, but it would be nice
if you could help to check if other things are OK before starting the next RC.

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Celeborn(Incubating) 0.3.1-incubating-rc2

2023-09-15 Thread Cheng Pan
Hi, Duo,

Thanks for voting and verification.

> 'mvn test -Pflink-1.17', I'm not sure whether this is the correct

it probably works, it’s recommended to use `build/mvn` instead of bare `mvn` to
build and test, which will use or download the `mvn` with the exact
`maven.version` declared in `pom.xml`.

the community is exploring migrating the building system to sbt, the sbt
building doc is located at
https://celeborn.apache.org/docs/latest/developers/sbt/

The same thing occurred in Spark 3.1.0[1], and they choose to treat it as an
invalid version, which may be a good example to follow up.

2023-07-23 Thread Cheng Pan
+1 (non-binding)

I checked

- signature and checksum of source artifacts are good
- DISCLAIMER exists
- artifacts' name contains "incubating"
- no unexpected binary files inside source artifacts
- building succeeded from source on Ubuntu 20.04 with OpenJDK 8
command: build/mvn clean package -DskipTests -Pspark-3.3

Additionally, I tested it with 1T TeraSort[1], and everything looks fine.

 Hi Li Gang,

Kyuubi maintains document[1] and website[2] using git repo[3][4], we does
not use the Wiki system like Confluence.

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Kyuubi(Incubating) v1.6.1-incubating rc0

2022-10-26 Thread Cheng Pan
Hi Justin,

Thanks for checking, it was definitely an accident to track
mysql-connector-java-8.0.30.jar to the git repo and include it in the
source release tarball.

I have created a blocking issue[1] to track and solve this problem ASAP.

BTW, are there some convenient scripts/tools to check binary files? I think
we can put them into our release process to avoid the same issues happening
again.

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Kyuubi(Incubating) v1.6.0-incubating rc1

2022-09-05 Thread Cheng Pan
Hi Duo,

Thanks for your patience, I checked the two failed test cases you
mentioned, but I can not reproduce the first[1] failure, it may be a
flaky test or something depending on your environment.

And we confirm that the test case[2] is a bad test case, but it does
not mean a bug, we opened an issue[3] to track it.

BTW, the whole test cases passed in GitHub Action, you can check the
result on [4].

[1] support to interrupt the thrift request if remote engine is broken
[2] all hadoop related environment variables are configured except

2022-09-03 Thread Cheng Pan
The recommended testing command is `build/mvn clean install test`. The
`install` is required because some moudules depend on the shaded jar
of one module, it's the limitation of Maven I think.

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Kyuubi(Incubating) v1.6.0-incubating rc1

2022-09-01 Thread Cheng Pan
+1 (non-binding)

I checked the following things:

- all links are valid.
- incubating in the name.
- LICENSE looks good.
- NOTICE looks good.
- DISCLAIMER exists.
- the source tarball ships changelog under `docs/changelog/v1.6.0-incubating.md`
- signatures are good.
```
gpg --import KEYS
gpg --verify apache-kyuubi-1.6.0-incubating-bin.tgz.asc
gpg --verify apache-kyuubi-1.6.0-incubating-source.tgz.asc
```
- checksums are good.
```
sha512sum --check apache-kyuubi-1.6.0-incubating-bin.tgz.sha512
sha512sum --check apache-kyuubi-1.6.0-incubating-source.tgz.sha512
```
- build success from source code (ubuntu 22.04, openjdk-8).
```
build/dist --tgz --spark-provided --hive-provided --flink-provided
```
- kyuubi spark tpcds connector works as expected

@tison, I just make the mysql connector license issue clear, it helps the
StreamPark team to make decisions about how to resolve the issue.

Re: [DISCUSS] Incubating Proposal for StreamPark

Hi Justin,

> The issue is not if it in the release package or not, it cannot be a
> dependency.

Could you please elaborate more about "dependency"? I can imagine the
following use cases:

1. the project hardly depends on mysql-connector, w/o mysql-connector,
the project can not work totally.
2. some optional functionalities of the project require
mysql-connector, w/o mysql-connector, the project still works.
3. the project use mysql-connector for testing-only purpose,
mysql-connector is not required in runtime at all, e.g. the project
implements MySQL transport protocol, it uses mysql-connector for
testing to ensure compatibility.

Are the above use cases allowed/forbidden by the apache project?

Cheng Pan

2022-03-05 Thread Cheng Pan
BTW, there are other examples and I think they can help you to think
about how to name your project components.

1. spark-cassandra-connector_2.12[1], does not make the spark minor
version be part of the artifact name, but documents the support
matrix[2] instead.
2. elasticsearch-spark-20_2.12[3], elasticsearch-spark-30_2.12[4],
adds the minimal supported spark minor version into the artifact name,
but uses `20` to represent spark 2.0
3. spark-sql-kafka-0-10_2.12, similar to elasticsearch, but uses
`0-10` to represent kafka 0.10
4. kyuubi-extension-spark-3-1_2.12, similar to spark-sql-kafka

Re: Re: [VOTE] Release Spark Connectors v1.0.0 for Apache Doris(Incubating)

2022-03-05 Thread Cheng Pan
Usually Spark keeps good binary compatibility in the same minor
versions, it says that the downstream project builds against spark
3.1.2 is also expected to work with spark 3.1.3, but not spark 3.2.x,
so, it's rare to keep a patch version in the name.
I think Apache Iceberg does a good job in this area[1][2], I would
suggest changing the artifact name to
`doris-spark-connector-3.1_2.12`, and the GAV(group, artifact,
version) should be
`org.apache.doris:doris-spark-connector-3.1_2.12:1.0.0`.

Re: [VOTE] Release Spark Connectors v1.0.0 for Apache Doris(Incubating)

2022-03-05 Thread Cheng Pan
Hi,

One question about the name of artifacts, it seems does not follow the
common practice, the recommended artifact name pattern is
"{aritifact_name}_{scala_binary_version}", e.g. `spark-core_2.12`,
this is the default behavior defined in sbt[1] and the de facto
artifact name pattern in scala world, and the mvnrepository.com can
recognize and extract scala binary versions from the name.

[2] https://mvnrepository.com/artifact/org.apache.spark/spark-core

One further question, as we already have such declarations in our NOTICE

does it mean we can eliminate other declarations if we use code from Apache

Hi Justin,

Thanks for voting and questions.

the NOTICE file correct?

It is from Spark NOTICE files.

Because Kyuubi copies some source code from Apache Spark, then we append
the content of
Spark NOTICE into the Kyuubi NOTICE file.

Correct us if it's not correct practice.

Will fix it.

As Kyuubi copies some code from Apache Spark, so we also copy LICENSE and
NOTICE content from Apache Spark and append them to Kyuubi's LICENSE and
NOTICE. I don't know if it's the right way?

Setup JDK8, then run `build/mvn clean install -DskipTests`

[CANCEL][VOTE] Release Apache Kyuubi(Incubating) v1.3.0-incubating RC7

2021-09-04 Thread Cheng Pan
Hello Incubator Community,

We need to cancel the RC7 vote due to one blocking issue of pom.xml[1],
and we also got some very valuable feedbacks and suggestions[2][3].

I opened the following GitHub issues to track them, and will start the next
round vote once all of them got addressed.

- `ServiceDiscoverySuite` fails if hostname contains uppercase letter. [4]
- Enhance shell script to improve error message when `SPARK_HOME` is absent
or invaild. [5]
- Remove developers info from `pom.xml`. [6]
- "Incubating" is not in NOTICE file. [7]
- "incubating" is in file names but "apache-" is not. [8]
- The sha512 file contains the absolute path of the file. [9]

Thank everyone who helped vote.

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Kyuubi(Incubating) v1.3.0-incubating RC7

2021-09-03 Thread Cheng Pan
Hi Duo,

Thanks for verification and voting.

  Run UT: mvn test -fn
  org.apache.kyuubi.ha.client.ServiceDiscoverySuite in kyuubi-ha failed with
  "kentyao/zhangduo-[virtualb]o...@apache.org" did not equal
  "kentyao/zhangduo-[VirtualB]o...@apache.org"
(ServiceDiscoverySuite.scala:128)
Should be something related case sensitive/insensitive domain name?

The issue has been reported[1] and got fixed[2] just a few hours after
cutting RC7.

And a minor problem that, the sha512 file contains the absolute path of
the file, like

/Users/chengpan/Projects/apache-kyuubi/work/release/kyuubi-1.3.0-incubating-bin.tgz
  Better just name it kyuubi-1.3.0-incubating-bin.tgz

Got the same suggestion from Zhenxu, will fix it in the next release.

For the pom issue, I created a PR[1] to remove the developers from pom.xml,
it should include in the next release.

Hi Justin,

Thanks for the explanation. Do you think it's a blocking issue for
incubator release?

If yes, I'm going to cancel this vote and raise another one once it
gets addressed.

Or it's not a blocking issue, then I will fix it before the next release.

Thanks,
Cheng Pan

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Kyuubi(Incubating) v1.3.0-incubating RC7

2021-09-02 Thread Cheng Pan
Hi Calvin,

Thanks for the verification.

I saw some projects like Apache Zookeeper and HBase have the
same practice.

I also want to know if this practice is allowed, or just not recommended?

Thanks,
Cheng Pan

RE: [DISCUSS] Incubating Proposal of Kyuubi

2021-06-02 Thread Cheng Pan
Hi all,

Thanks for the review and questions.

I'm one of the Kyuubi committers, and have participated in the recent 6 months,
include code changes[1], PR reviews,
documents improvements, discussions, etc.

I'd like to say, both Kent and other committers are nice and patient persons,
and most of the discussions and
code reviews happen in GitHub, I got many benefits from the contribution of
Kyuubi.

Kyuubi community is still young, but growing.

From GitHub statistics[2], in the last 6 months, there are over 20 people
participated in Kyuubi code development, include
6 people over hundred lines change, 4 people over thousand lines change.

As a new committer, besides on code contribution, I'm also trying my best to
extend the community. I recommend those engineers
who are finding the way to migrate ETL infrastructure from Hive to Spark SQL to
have a try on Kyuubi, and collect the bug
reports[3][4] and some feature requests from them. I'm also looking for some
potential contributors from the open-source
community. For example, there is a project[5] build on top of Kyuubi to
simplify to the deployment of Spark SQL on Kubernetes.
And there is a blog[6](in Chinese) written in recent days that analyzed the
architecture design and code implementation of Kyuubi.
And from the mail lists in Apache Incubator discussions, I also see some people
are interested in this project.

I know there is still a long way to go to building the community, and hope to
get helped by Apache Incubator.
