Re: [DISCUSS] Graduate Apache AGE Incubating as a Top Level Project

2021-12-20 Thread Eya Badal Abdisho
Hello Justin,

Thank you for your feedback. Please find more information following:

- Indications that the committer/PPMC bar may be too high and not all forms
of contribution recognized → Comment noted. We will no longer insist that
committers are code contributors.

- A new PPMC member is not being added in the correct way → Are there any
additional steps that need to be taken to complete this process?

- Other than that recent addition no other PPMC members added → The voting
process for Pieterjan De Potter (Ghent University) and Nick Sorrell (Cintio
Ltd) to become PPMC members will begin immediately.

- May be some concern about the employment diversity of the PPMC members.

The proposed new PPMC members above are not affiliated with any other PPMC
in any way.

   -

John Gemignani [Bitnine] → Initial member of the project at the time of
   donation
   -

Josh Innis [Bitnine] → Initial member of the project at the time of
   donation
   -

Eya Badal [Bitnine] → Initial member of the project at the time of
   donation
   -

Mason Sharp [Immuta] → Initial member of the project at the time of
   donation
   -

Jasper Blues [Libration Data] → Initial member of the project at the
   time of donation
   -

   Dehowe Feng [Bitnine]
   -

Pieterjan De Potter [Ghent university] → Soon to be PPMC
   -

Nick Sorrell [Cintio] → Soon to be PPMC

- Issues with headers and licensing a few months back → All were fixed at
the time when 0.6.0 was released.

-People not signed up to the right mailing lists → All the active people
did. Jasper (initial member) and Mason (initial member) have been mainly
following and supporting the project and will sign up to the mailing lists.
Raphael (mentor) and Suneel (mentor) have not been active at all.

- I see in the maturity guide under releases it mentions docker files but
these don’t seem to be documented on the website? Where are these located?
This related JIRA is a little concerning [1].
The docker image is available at
https://hub.docker.com/repository/docker/joefagan/incubator-age and a link
is provided on the website on the Releases page. The image (>800MB) cannot
reside on age.apache.org because it exceeds the file size limit of 25MB.

- There are some minor trademark issues on the Bitnine site e.g [2] → All
will be fixed in a day.

- Releases of Age-viewer not following ASF policy → The first official
Apache release for the Age-viewer is in the voting process and it follows
the ASF policy.

- Links to download 0.5.0 and 0.6.0 on the download page are not correct
[3] They are fixed now

- I notice one person who replied to this thread had a agedb.io email
address - what is it relationship with the project?

Agedb is a US startup (incorporated in California May this year) and is
affiliated with Bitnine Global, who contributed the original AGE source
codes to the Apache Software Foundation. The purpose of Agedb is not yet
clearly defined but it is expected to be to provide graph database
solutions and related services.

The agedb.io email address belongs to Andrew Ko (also a consultant to
Bitnine) who is one of the committers. He has been helping the project,
consulting on the roadmap and website, and nurturing technical
collaboration with other Big Data related Apache projects.

Thank you very much again for your time and support.
Eya

Hello Justin,

Thank you for your feedback. The issue with hashes and Signatures on the
website for each download is fixed. We created a download page and
added the required information as mentioned before: http://age.apache.org/
<http://age.apache.org/#> It is under the download then versions page.

Based on your feedback should we remove "Postgresql Copyright" from our
NOTICE and add "Copyright 2020 Bitnine Co., Ltd.”?

Please advise.

Best regards,

My pleasure, I am glad it is clear now :) So the difference between AgensGraph
and AgensGraph Extension when it comes to user experience is that In AgensGraph
user needs to migrate their existing data, if any, and follow some steps in
this regard whereas in Agensgraph Extension all these steps such as migration
are eliminated. In AgensGraph Extension user can use existing data without
migration to enable graph database.

AgensGraph Extension has "Extension" in its name because it is being developed
as an extension of PostgreSQL. AgensGraph is a fork of PostgreSQL.

AgensGraph Extension has "Extension" in its name because it is being developed
as an extension of PostgreSQL. AgensGraph is a fork of PostgreSQL.

It is also updated on our proposal:

Looking for Champion and Mentors

2020-01-28 Thread Eya Badal Abdisho
Hello all,

I am Eya, a software engineer working with the AgensGraph Extension team
(Multimodel Database)

We propose to contribute AgensGraph Extension as an Apache Incubator project,
and
we are still looking for possible Champion and Mentors. If anyone would like to
volunteer, we would greatly appreciate it.

Best Regards,
Eya

===
The draft of the proposal can be found on wiki:
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/INCUBATOR/AgensGraphExtension
===

You may also find following the draft(work in progress) version of the proposal
as well

*This proposal is the first draft and is a work in progress*

Abstract
AgensGraph Extension will be a multi-model database that enables graph and
relational models built on PostgreSQL.

Proposal
We propose the AgensGraph Extension to the Apache foundation. AgensGraph
Extension is to provide an extension for PostgreSQL to give the users the
ability to leverage graph database on top of the existing relational database
with minimal effort. The basic principle of the project is to create single
storage that can handle both relational and graph model data so that the users
can use the standard ANSI SQL along with openCypher
(http://www.opencypher.org), the Graph query language.

Background
To provide some background, the AgensGraph extension project is being actively
developed. This project is a new generation of a multi-model graph database for
the modern complex data environment. A graph database can solve problems from
very different angles, thanks to its different approach to data and its
organization. By preparing data in graph models the users can apply graph
algorithms that provide forte in handling complexity. Moreover, Graph data is a
suitable form to apply machine learning.

Prior to AgensGraph extension, there is an existing forked project which is
publicly available on the following link:
https://github.com/bitnine-oss/agensgraph

While working on the fork version of this project, we found out that there are
increasing voices asking for an extension of AgensGraph. It was then when we
decided to develop and work on the extension version to provide more benefits
to PostgreSQL users such as easy installation and compatibility.

AgensGraph Extension is a multi-model database designed to be simple and
user-friendly, which supports the relational and graph data model at the same
time that enables users to integrate the legacy relational data model and the
flexible graph data model in one database. AgensGraph Extension supports
ANSI-SQL and openCypher (http://www.opencypher.org). SQL queries and Cypher
queries can be integrated into a single query in AgensGraph Extension.

Currently, we have active users and contributors that forked and used this
project to build other projects. Some examples could be found in the following
links: https://www.nuget.org/packages/FSharp.Data.AgensGraph/

Rationale
AgensGraph mainly offers a multimodel database, eliminating the migration
efforts while having relational and graph models.

There is a strong need for a cohesive, easy to migrate multimodel for a
relational and graph database. AgensGraph Extension is an extension of
PostgreSQL which supports all the functionalities and features of the
PostgreSQL and offers a graph model in addition. Users with a relational
background and data model who are in need of having a graph model on top of
their existing relational model can use this extension with minimal effort
because they can use existing data without migration to enable graph database.

Since AgensGraph Extension is based on the powerful PostgreSQL RDBMS, it is
very robust, fully-featured and ready to use. AgensGraph Extension is optimized
for handling complex connected graph data and provides plenty of powerful
database features essential to the database environment including ACID
transactions, multi-version concurrency control, stored procedure, triggers,
constraints, sophisticated monitoring and a flexible data model (JSON).
Moreover, AgensGraph Extension leverages the rich eco-systems of PostgreSQL and
can be extended with many outstanding external modules, like PostGIS.

Initial Goals
A complete implementation of openCypher language specification in a PostgreSQL
extension:

Implementation of openCypher parser
Implementation of internal AgensGraph Data Types
Implementation of expression logic
Implementation of Cypher language Clauses (Return, Create, Delete, Update,
Match)
Implementation of variable length expressions (VLE)
Implementation of graph-related functions (such as aggregation)

Current Status

Meritocracy:
Our current practices align with the meritocracy principles of Apache.
AgensGraph Extension was originally created by Junseok Yang in June 2019.
Committers have the freedom to work on a task independently and consult any
other member of the team when necessary. Once committers have finished, a git
patch is sub

Champions and Mentors for New Project Proposals

2020-01-22 Thread Eya Badal Abdisho
Hello Community,

I hope you are all great. I would appreciate you all to take a look at the
following project summary and background/draft proposal that we are trying to
propose to the Apache Community.

Currently, we are looking for mentors and champion and we would appreciate it
if someone who is interested to join us in this journey.

Project Abstract/Proposal/Background:

We are working on the rest of the proposals and waiting to gain write access
for wiki so we can post it there.

I would greatly appreciate it if interested people to support and help us
through this process.

Hello there,

This is Eya Badal, I would appreciate your time if you can guide me on some
steps. I am trying to create a proposal and I found out that I need to have
a champion and two mentors. I was wondering how should I find those people
and ask them to my mentors and champion?

I tried to send a thread in general@incubator to seek some information but
I had no luck so I would greatly appreciate it if you can help me.

In addition, I created an account on cwiki and I want to request to
edit/write permission to create m proposal over there.

I would appreciate any help on this matter.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.
