 The ambari-1.2.1-incubating.tar.gz.mds file is wrong; there should be
 separate files for each hash type.
 Normally only MD5 and SHA are provided.

 The archive file does not match the source tag, as it contains lots of
 .pyc files, i.e. compiled Python source.
 These should not be present in the source archive, and I would not
 expect to find them under a /src/ directory in any archive.

 The NOTICE file does not have the correct format - in particular the

 Also the year looks wrong, and there is a typo in the 4th line.

 The file should start

 As far as I can tell from the quoted license, it looks to me like the

 The KEYS file does not have a header for the second key

 There are a lot of files without AL headers.
 Some of these are the Puppet source; some are JSON which unfortunately

 = Tez =

 == Abstract ==
 Tez is an effort to develop a generic application framework which can be used
 to process arbitrarily complex data-processing tasks and also a re-usable set
 of data-processing primitives which can be used by other projects.

 == Proposal ==
 Tez is a proposal to develop a generic application which can be used to
 process complex data-processing task DAGs and runs natively on Apache Hadoop
 YARN. YARN is a generic resource-management system on which currently
 applications like MapReduce already exist. MapReduce is a specific, and
 constrained, DAG - which is not optimal for several frameworks like Apache
 Hive
 and Apache Pig. Furthermore, we propose to develop a re-usable set of
 libraries of data-processing primitives such as sorting, merging,
 data-shuffling, intermediate data management etc. which are necessary for Tez
 which we envision can be used directly by other projects.

 == Background ==
 Apache Hadoop MapReduce has emerged as the assembly-language on which other
 frameworks like Apache Pig and Apache Hive have been built. However, it has
 been well accepted that MapReduce produces very constrained task DAGs for
 each
 job which results in Apache Pig and Apache Hive requiring multiple MapReduce
 jobs for several queries. By providing a more expressive DAG of tasks for a
 job, Tez attempts to provide significantly enhanced data-processing
 capabilities for projects like Apache Pig, Apache Hive, Cascading etc.

 == Rationale ==
 There is an important gap that Tez fulfills in the Apache Hadoop ecosystem of
 allowing for more expressive task DAGs for data-processing applications such
 as Apache Pig, Apache Hive, Cascading etc.

 With emergence of Apache Hadoop YARN, there is a strong need for a
 common DAG application which can then be shared by Apache Pig, Apache Hive,
 Cascading etc.

 == Initial Goals ==
 The initial goals for this project are to specify the detailed requirements
 and architecture, and then develop the initial implementation including the
 DAG ApplicationMaster to run natively inside Apache Hadoop YARN.

 == Current Status ==
 Significant work has been completed to identify the initial requirements and
 define the overall system architecture. There is a patch available in the
 internal Hortonworks git repository which can act as the initial seed.

 === Meritocracy ===
 We plan to invest in supporting a meritocracy. We will discuss the
 requirements
 in an open forum. Several companies have already expressed interest in this
 project, and we intend to invite additional developers to participate.
 We will encourage and monitor community participation so that privileges can
 be
 extended to those that contribute.

 === Community ===
 The need for a generic DAG application for data processing in the open
 source is
 tremendous, so there is a potential for a very large community. We believe
 that Tez's extensible architecture will further encourage community
 participation.
 Also, related Apache projects (eg, Pig, Hive) have very large and active
 communities, and we expect that over time Tez will also attract a large
 community.

 === Core Developers ===
 The developers on the initial committers list include people very experienced
 in the Apache Hadoop ecosystem:

 There are setup steps mentioned at
 https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/AMBARI/Ambari+Development for
 getting Ambari to build.
 The web layer requires node.js and brunch.

Re: Ambari status (Was: [Incubator Wiki] Update of November2012 by mahadev)

2012-11-19 Thread Mahadev Konar
Hi Jukka,
 Sorry missed this email.

 Sounds like you're doing pretty good, and congratulations for the
 release! I'm also happy to see many sign-offs on your report.

Thanks

 + Issues that must be addressed before graduation are:
 +
 +   - Making a release
 + - Attracting users and developers
 + - Increase diversity of developers outside of Hortonworks

 You already have an Apache release out, so you can cross the release
 from that list.

Sorry that was meant to be more of Apache releases on a regular
cadence rather than just saying no Apache Release. I am hoping to
start a discussion on the dev list for regular cadence on the
releases.

 In terms of diversity, how heavily are people from Hortonworks
 currently present in the PPMC and among active committers (i.e. are
 there many/any commits being made by people not employed by
 Hortonworks)? And on the other hand, how many patches are you seeing
 from potential new committers?

Mostly the patches are from folks employed by Hortonworks. We do have
PPMC members employed by IBM/EMC and others, though patches from non
hortonworks people are very few currently. We are hoping to fix that
with good documentation on Ambari project (for dev's and users) pretty
soon (within a couple of weeks) so that will encourage more people to
collaborate.
We also intend to start public meetups to build a stronger community
for Apache Ambari.

Hope that helps.

thanks
mahadev

 Jukka Zitting

Re: [VOTE] Accept Helix into Apache Incubator

2012-10-11 Thread Mahadev Konar
 and is in production use.

 === Inexperience with Open Source ===
 Only one of the core developers has experience with open source
 development. Kishore has been actively involved with the ASF as a
 committer and lead developer of S4.

 === Homogeneous Developers ===
 The current core developers are all from LinkedIn. However, we hope to
 establish a developer community that includes contributors from
 several corporations and we are actively encouraging new contributors
 via the mailing lists and public presentations of Helix.

 === Reliance on Salaried Developers ===
 Currently, the developers are paid to do work on Helix. However, once
 the project has a community built around it, we expect to get
 committers, developers and community from outside the current core
 developers. However, because LinkedIn relies on Helix internally, the
 reliance on salaried developers is unlikely to change.

 === Relationships with Other Apache Products ===
 Helix uses Apache ZooKeeper to coordinate its state amongst the
 managed cluster components and for leader election to provide fault
 tolerance, and uses Apache Maven for build management.

 === An Excessive Fascination with the Apache Brand ===
 While we respect the reputation of the Apache brand and have no doubts
 that it will attract contributors and users, our interest is primarily
 to give Helix a solid home as an open source project following an
 established development model. We have also given reasons in the
 Rationale and Alignment sections.

 == Documentation ==
 Information about Helix can be found at
 [https://github.com/linkedin/helix/wiki]. The following links provide
 more information about the project:

  * Home Page: http://linkedin.github.com/helix/
  * Github source: https://github.com/linkedin/helix
  * Documentation: https://github.com/linkedin/helix/wiki
  * Javadocs: http://linkedin.github.com/helix/apidocs/

 == Initial Source ==
 Helix has been under development at LinkedIn since April 2011. It is
 currently hosted on github under the Apache license 2 at
 [https://github.com/linkedin/helix]
 Helix is written in Java. Its source tree is entirely self-contained
 and relies on Maven as its build system and dependency resolution
 mechanism.

 == External Dependencies ==
 The dependencies all have Apache compatible licenses.
  * log4j
  * zookeeper
  * xstream
  * jackson-core-asl
  * jackson-mapper-asl
  * commons-io
  * commons-cli
  * commons-math
  * zkclient
  * camel-josql
  * camel-core
  * gentlyweb-utils
  * josql
  * commons-management
  * commons-logging-api
  * org.restlet
  * com.noelios.restlet
  * net.sf.jsqlparser

 Non-Apache build tools that are used by Helix are as follows:
  * Cobertura: GNU GPLv2
 Note that Cobertura is optional and is only used for calculating unit
 test coverage.

 == Cryptography ==
 Not applicable.

 == Required Resources ==
 === Mailing Lists ===
  * helix-private for private PMC discussions (with moderated subscriptions)
  * helix-dev
  * helix-commits
  * helix-user

 === Git Directory ===
 Since Git is now available to be used as primary repo type, Helix
 would be available in the git repository instead of svn.
 [https://git.apache.org/helix.git]

 === Issue Tracking ===
 JIRA Helix (HELIX)

 === Other Resources ===
 The existing code already has unit and integration tests, so we would
 like a Jenkins instance to run them whenever a new patch is submitted.
 This can be added after project creation.

 == Initial Committers ==
  * Kishore Gopalakrishna
  * Shi Lu
  * Zhen Zheng
  * Adam Silberstein
