news reorganization
i've just committed the reorganization i proposed last week. i've moved all the news documents into the news subdirectory and all now have date-related names (so no renaming should be necessary and therefore the urls will be permanent). the html versions of the old pages now redirect to the new ones. i'm considering adding some other redirects into the .htaccess file. - robert - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This release is a minor bugfix release. The prior release was compiled with JDK 1.4's compiler, making it incompatible with previous JDKs About Avalon: The Avalon project is Apache's Java Server Framework. It is separated into five sub projects: Framework, Excalibur, LogKit, Cornerstone, and Phoenix. Its purpose is to simplify server side programming for Java based projects. It formalizes serveral best of breed practices and patterns for server side programming. For more information about Avalon, please go to http://avalon.apache.org";>http://avalon.apache.org. About Avalon Framework 4.1.1: The Avalon Framework formalizes the contracts and patterns used in the other Avalon projects. It is derived from modern software engineering techniques and aims to provide a solid basis on which to build server products. What that means is that we define the central interface Component. We also define the relationship (contract) a component has with peers, ancestors and children. This documentation introduces you to those patterns, interfaces, and relationships. The Avalon Framework raises the abstraction level from Object-Oriented Programming concept one notch to the Component-Oriented Programming model. This enables programmers to concern themselves with assemblies of classes, rather than the classes themselves--thus reducing the number of things the programmer must keep in mind, and speeding up application development. The Avalon Framework is already used in http://cocoon.apache.org/2.1";>Cocoon2, an XML publishing framework. The Avalon Framework is also used in http://james.apache.org";>Apache JAMES, a Java(tm) Mail Server. Another project that is built on Avalon Framework is http://www.jesktop.org";>Jestkop, a cross-platform replacement for your ordinary desktop. If you are evaluating Avalon and want the proof that it's claims are valid check them out. Details are: Date: 2001/01/16 (Tuesday) Time: 1:00 PM PST Location: CollabNet Offices, Burlingame CA (in the SF Bay Area) CollabNet has graciously donated some space for us to have this meeting. You can get directions to the CollabNet offices http://www.collab.net/about/contact.html";>here. Even though this is a meeting of the Jakarta PMC, all ASF Members are welcome to attend. Also welcome are developers in any of the projects that fall under the jurisdiction of the Java Apache Project and the Jakarta Project. I am currently starting to investigate conference call-in numbers so that people that are geographically not close to the Bay Area can call in as well to follow what is going on. I'll have more info on that a few days before the meeting. Further information announcements will be sent to the [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list (see the mailing list page for instructions on how to subscribe). James Duncan Davidson (PMC President) 19 December 2000 - ECS 1.4.1 Release The latest release of http://jakarta.apache.org/jakarta-ecs/";> Element Construction Set, has just been made http://www.apache.org/dist/jakarta/jakarta-ecs/release/v1.4.1/";>available. This is a minor packaging update where the ecs.properties file was not included in the .jar file. 18 December 2000 - ECS 1.4 Release The latest release of http://jakarta.apache.org/jakarta-ecs/";> Element Construction Set, has just been made http://www.apache.org/dist/jakarta/jakarta-ecs/release/v1.4/";>available. 13 December 2000 - Tomcat 4.0 Milestone 5 Release The latest milestone release of http://www.apache.org/dist/jakarta/jakarta-tomcat-4.0/release/v4.0-m5/";> Tomcat 4.0, milestone 5, has just been made available. This release includes two major new areas of functionality (the initial release of a web connector for Apache, and a JNDI naming context for use when running outside of a J2EE application server), performance improvements, and many bug fixes. With this release, we also announce a feature freeze for Tomcat 4.0, and will start a cycle of beta releases immediately, culminating with a Tomcat 4.0 final release as soon as we're satisfied with its quality and performance. 12 December 2000 - Tomcat 3.1.1 and Tomcat 3.2.1 Security Fix Releases Recently, several security vulnerabilities have been identified in both Tomcat 3.1 and Tomcat 3.2. To deal with these issues, maintenance releases of each Tomcat version have been prepared: http://www.apache.org/dist/jakarta/tomcat/release/v3.1.1/bin";>Tomcat 3.1.1 and http://www.apache.org/dist/jakarta/tomcat/release/v3.2.1/bin";>Tomcat 3.2.1. Please see the file doc/readme in each download to read the Release Notes for that version. In each case, you will not need to modify any native code components used to integrate Tomcat with a web server -- all of the changes affect only the Java components under the $TOMCAT_HOME directory. 29 November 2000 - Tomcat 3.2 Final Release Available The most anticipated release from the Jakarta project yet! We hereby announce the availability of the final release of version 3.2 of the Tomcat servlet container and JSP engine. Tomcat implements the Servlet 2.2 and JSP 1.1 specifications, and represents the most current release quality build of this project. Compared to version 3.1, there have been substantial improvements in performance, many new features (including support for SSL connections), and well over one hundred bug fixes. Pick up the binary distribution at http://www.apache.org/dist/jakarta/tomcat/release/v3.2/bin";>http://www.apache.org/dist/jakarta/itomcat/release/v3.2/bin. 27 November 2000 - Jakarta Regexp 1.2 Available We proudly announce the release 1.2 of the Jakarta Regexp project. Please see the Changes document for more information. 26 November 2000 - New Website Design We finally have a new website design! The old one was getting stale and we needed to update our look. We also have a new process that allows our sub-projects to easily

Apache Cocoon is a web development framework built around the concept of separation of concerns (that is: allowing people to do their job without having to step on each other toes) and component-oriented web RAD. Cocoon implements these concepts around the notion of 'component pipelines' modelled after the 'process chain' concept where each worker specializes on a particular operation. This makes it possible to use a Lego(tm)-like approach in building web solutions where these components can be hooked together into pipelines without requiring further programming. We like to think at Cocoon as "web glue" for your web application development needs. But most important, a glue that can keep concerns separate and allow parallel evolution of the two sides, improving development pace and reducing the chance of conflicts. The latest version is downloadable from here For more information about Apache Cocoon 2.1.4, please go to Apache Cocoon Home Page. The Apache Cocoon Project 12 February 2004 - Ant 1.6.1 Released Ant 1.6.1 has been released on February 12th, 2004. Apache Ant 1.6.1 is available for download from here The ASF Board has approved the new Apache License 2.0. For a copy of that license, please here. The Ant 1.6.1 release is delivered with the Apache License 2.0. Ant 1.6.1 fixes several bugs, most notably the handling of the default namespace for nested elements. Ant 1.6.1 also introduces initial support for compiling with Java 1.5. Thanks to all the committers and the ant community for helping us develop this release. 1 February 2004 - Xerces-J 2.6.1 Released The Xerces-J team is very happy to announce that version 2.6.1 of Xerces-J is now available. This release contains support for OASIS XML Catalogs and now includes the XML Commons Resolver (version 1.1) with the distribution. It also provides an experimental implementation of the latest drafts for Document Object Model Level 3 Core and Load/Save (see beta2-dom3-Xerces-J-bin.2.6.1.zip). This will be the last release that supports JDK 1.1. Future releases of Xerces-J will require at least JDK 1.2. Specifically, the significant changes introduced in this release are: Added support for XML Catalogs. [Michael Glavassevich] Implemented some remaining XML Schema errata and fixed several schema related bugs. [Sandy Gao] Fixed various DOM Level 3 bugs. [Neil Delima, Kohsuke Kawaguchi, Michael Glavassevich, Elena Litani, K. Venugopal] Implemented well-formedness checking for LSSerializer (DOM Level 3). [Elena Litani] Modified the XJavac task used by the build file so that Xerces can be built on Mac OS X with Apple JDK 1.4. [Alex Milowski] Fixed possible security hole: the features and properties set on the parser were not propagated to the XMLSchemaLoader. [Elena Litani] Implemented the latest XInclude draft, excluding support for XPointer. [Michael Glavassevich, K. Venugopal] Implemented missing support for supplemental characters in XML 1.1 names. [Michael Glavassevich] Fixed a bug which caused the parser to overwrite some of the user's configuration with default values when namespace support was disabled. RE: [HiveMind] There's that grant!
Discussing things with Prashant ... because of the four month gap, we think it would be wise to resubmit the proposal. Part of the proposal discusses the current code base and home page; the code base was being stored in Apache CVS but that was brought out pending the software grant. I'm hoping that can be restored. Likewise, the home page was brought down. If necessary, the proposal can be pointed to the temporary home page I've set up, but I'd prefer to get HiveMind live, so it can be examined by interested parties, before we initiate a new vote. In addition, I have a considerable number of code changes "trapped" on my home workstation, waiting for a CVS server to become available. This includes changing the license to ASL 2.0 and changing the root package from org.apache.commons.hivemind to org.apache.hivemind. -- Howard M. I guess this is as much of a notification as we get? In any case, the grant appears to have been recorded. -- Howard M. HiveMind software grant faxed -- received?
Prashant faxed the HiveMind software grant last week, but we've heard no word of it being recieved. I'm anxious for this to happen so that we can, for starters, bring the HiveMind CVS and home page back up. Who is the person who actually receives the fax? What is the process once he or she receives it? -- Howard M.
