Re: lucene

2004-08-23 Thread Sebastian Ho
Hi

Indexing JSP files is the same as any other files (e.g. text).
If you do not want to include the JSP or HTML tags, you will need to
parse the file to extract all texts before indexing.
There are a lot of open source parsing for this purpose.

Please ask this question on the lucene-users list ([EMAIL PROTECTED]). To join this

Beofre doing that, I'd recommend reading all the online documentation for Lucene here

I'm getting the list together now. I've had a few responses so far so
hopefully the list will be complete soon. I will pass the info on to Sam

I believe that all the active committers are on board. There were some
mertius committers that could not be reached, but I understand that the
decision was to just proceed based on the consent of the people working
on Lucene now.

I think if we give them a working Jakarta Web site and a CVS, the rest
will quickly follow.

I'm stepping through the Jakarta-Site2 default configuration, and
setting the docs up in a jakarta-lucene directory, that I can upload
when the CVS is online.

I'm not a Velocity guru, but reckon you can help with that if I get
stuck ;-)

Jason,

I see that zenplex has a NYC address, but don't know if that is where
you are situate. So if I don't hear from you, I'll assume you're caught
up in the turmoil.

Meanwhile, I'd say we should get the site and CVS setup for them, but

If you are in a position to get the intial mailing lists and CVS setup

Part of the reason for the fact that there hasn't been a lot of Jakarta
project adoption is that the current license for Lucene is LGPL.

We are skirting that in Scarab because we have made it a 100% optional
dependency and we also do not have a real distribution of Scarab yet. It
could be done the same way in other Jakarta projects, but that hasn't been
the general theme for projects.

The only major risk I could see is that the developers may or may not like
living under Jakarta, but that is something we won't know until after it
happens and is a common risk regardless of whether or not it is a top level
project or not.

Lucene is an independent reusable component.

There are many measures of size - lines of code, size of community, etc.
By these measures, it would appear that lucene could either be considered a
slighly largish commons component, or a slighly smallish jakarta
subproject.

Re: sourceforge; there are a number of differences. Has a community and a
relationship or affinity with other Jakarta projects are key
differentiators. Again, by the latter measure, Lucene is a slightly weak
Jakarta subproject (IMHO) - the only direct linkage I am aware of is by a
non-Apache project, namely Scarab. If this were a big concern to me, I
would be insisting on a sandbox until the project grows up.

But, all things considered, I don't see significant risk. That's why I
gave my +1.

Why? It seems that commons-sandbox is becoming a mini sourceforge. I thought
commons was about small independent reusable components. I don't know if
Lucene fits that bill, although it sounds "bigger" that that. IMHO, even
Cactus doesn't really belong there - it should probably be a top-level
project.

It can also be embedded within stuff. For example, we have it embedded
within Scarab.

Just to rephrase myself.
Don't want to offend any htdig ppl. The term "limited scope" is in
reference to it's projected application. htdig is a web searching & index
application.
Lucene is a searching and index application aimed at any information
retrival application.

I think that you will find that htdig's scope is limited compared to what
lucene can do. Lucene is far more than websearching and indexing. It
utilizes some searching algorithms that htdig doesn't.

Lucene isn't a command line util. But it can easily be added on.

Here is an idea.
There can be a lucene war file that you can drop into Tomcat or any
java/jsp container. It can be deployed with it's own admin to setup the
searching and indexing module for you.
Sophisticated web searching done quickly. With plenty of room for
enhancements.

+1 It's a great project. If it has a community around then even better ;)

I had heard of Lucene previously. I have not tried it myself but it sure sounds very
impressive. Regards, Ceki
