Re: [VOTE] Release XML Graphics FOP 2.0 (2nd attempt)

2015-06-01 Thread Andreas Delmelle
For the sake of completeness, if we really insist on fixing it, it does
appear to be possible...

In the meantime, I discovered that it is related to the way the zip targets in
our build.xml are specified.

Currently, the format used for the binary zip, for example is:

  zip zipfile=${name}-${version}-bin.zip basedir=${dist.bin.dir}
includes=**/

Now, if we were to employ Ant's zipfileset, and specify it analogously to the
tarfileset:

  zip destfile=${name}-${version}-bin.zip
zipfileset dir=${dist.bin.dir} filemode=755
  include name=${name}-${version}/fop/
/zipfileset
zipfileset dir=${dist.bin.dir}
  include name=**/
  exclude name=${name}-${version}/fop/
/zipfileset
  /zip

I have verified that that would suffice to address the issue, i.e. make the fop
script executable out of the box.

Still, I am OK with the current artifacts for 2.0 and postponing said tweak to
a later release.

Indeed. I had never noticed it before, but same thing here.

That said, I quickly checked the zips for 1.1, and they were that way as

BTW - Forgot to mention that it is already that way *in* the zip archive,

If nobody raised this as an issue before, one would guess the zips are only
downloaded by people on Windows, and the *nix folk instinctively opt for the
gzipped tars (?)

As you said, a minor problem, and seen that it was already that way in 1.1, I
would not let this hold back this release.

Just my 2 cents...

So before I spend time checking and testing the package I would like us to
reach a consensus here whether this vote still stands.

For what it's worth: from my end, the +1 would stand.

I was merely expressing a preference, and even offered to assist with resolving
the warnings, but Simon had another solution in mind, which works fine for me.

In my opinion, and given the fact that the number of warning/errors with
checkstyle and findbugs is dependent on the version used, having a litmus
test on checkstyle and findbugs warnings for a release only makes sense if we
were to use the most recent released versions of checkstyle and findbugs

For FB, does it make sense to make that the most recent version that works
with the minimum JVM requirement of 1.6 ?

As long as there is no minimum requirement of 1.7+ for FOP itself, that should
be 2.0.3, then?

That said, those committers who want to use a more recent version, should be
free -- and even encouraged -- to do so.

Just my 2 cents...

on the website, but its easy enough for us to change that back :-)

Aha, that could be the first change to commit, then…

Re: [VOTE] Matthias Reischenbacher for committer

2015-05-05 Thread Andreas Delmelle
Hi PMC

DISCLAIMER - No presumptions here as to whether this counts. I fully accept
that I probably lost my PMC vote due to a long period of inactivity.
Apparently, I am still subscribed to general@, so saw this one come by and
thought that now was as good a time as any to speak up.

For what it’s worth, Matthias does indeed seem like a valuable addition to the
team. Going back, he has actually been contributing for 4+ years now. I had
good contacts with him when he collaborated with me on a Bugzilla issue related
to the (lack of) support for orphans/widows (= currently FOP-1488 in JIRA). As
I recall, at the time he provided me with some very helpful real-life examples
that enabled me to refine the initial patches. Unfortunately, I did not get
around to committing that patch back then, so the current support for
orphans/widows in FOP is still somewhat deficient.

I cannot give any guarantee at this point as to how deeply I will become
involved again. Some people very dear to me just recommended that I try and go
back to doing things I used to care about, and working on FOP was one of those
‘things’, so here we are…
I did post an updated patch for FOP-1488 over the weekend, to see for myself
how easy/difficult it would be to get into programming and debugging Java
again. Almost like riding a bicycle, so far…
I also re-subscribed to fop-users@, and definitely intend on offering help when
I am able to.

In the meantime, if anybody has a particular JIRA entry in mind where you
suspect I can offer insights, valuable or otherwise, feel free to let me know,
either directly or via fop-dev@.

Later,

Andreas

 Hi PMC,

I propose to make Matthias Reischenbacher a committer on the FOP project.
Matthias is already on the active contributors list and has been for a few
months. I just did a quick tally of his activity. He's submitted 9 patches
including one last week, and reported 12 other bugs. I think he should be a
committer. Here's my +1 vote. Vote to general@ please. The vote will
 conclude in 7 days

Hi Simon

Thanks for the hint. I see that, indeed, the files in build/site
(produced by 'ant docs') do not have the problem, while the files in
build/forrest-docs (produced by 'forrest -f publish.xml build') do
 have it.

I am not entirely sure if it will help, but you could try running Forrest with
forcing the Java system property file.encoding, just to make sure that any
reads or writes from/to streams using the 'default platform encoding' are
always using UTF-8.
