[gentoo-amd64] Kernel 2.6.25

2008-06-24 Thread Mark Haney
Just out of curiosity, what's taking so long with releasing the .25
kernel to stable? I don't recall any kernel before taking this long to
be released.

Good question. BTW I'm running 2.6.25.8 (vanilla) and it works
perfectly...

I'm getting ready to do the same. I'm pretty sure it will work great,
as always. The fact is, it wasn't until I realized that I had not
received a stable copy of the kernel in quite a while that I asked. I
don't always go with ~amd64 just because I don't think about it.

There were at least some major VMware issues. I don't know what else.
But yeah, Fedora and OpenSUSE both shipped with 2.6.25.

well you could just try it out when it gets out. just put it in
package.unmask and remove the symlink use flag. in this way you could just
test it out whenever you like. i do the same and if the new versions
satisfie me then i stay with them.

FWIW, while using 2.6.25 I encountered a problem that was resolved by
switching to 2.6.24.

With a 2.6.25 kernel and linux-headers-2.6.25, vmware-server wasn't
happy. More precisely, attempts to load vmnet.ko (for example using
'modprobe vmnet.ko') would log the following:

vmnet: disagrees about version of symbol struct_module

in /var/log/messages. This occurred even with rebuilds of the kernel
and the module. Since switching to 2.6.24 (with 2.6.25's .config file
as the basis of the 2.6.24 .config file), all has been fine.

Regards,

David
