Hi,
I got interested in looking at Wine again this week. Netflix has
changed their over the net policies for watching movies, changing it
for a specific number of hours per month to an unlimited service. I
haven't used the service much in the past (watched maybe 40 hours over
the last year) because it required me to both go into Windows AND use
Internet Explorer instead of Firefox. With an unlimited watching
policy it now becomes far more interesting to me if it could work in
Linux.

With a lot of forum threads about how much better Wine has gotten
on games I thought I'd give it a try. I emerged the newest stable
version of Wine, downloaded Internet Explorer 7.0 and tried to get it
started. The immediate result was Wine failed to install IE7. I looked
around the WineHQ site but didn't find much specific on Wine in a
64-bit environment so I'm wondering if many people here are using it
that way and what the tricks are these days to actually getting
something to work AND work well?

Even if IE7 works then I'll have to see if the NetFlix integrated
player works. I suspect it won't but I'm taking this one step at a
time.

Thanks,
Mark

i use wine on amd64, without any major problems...
i use it for playing some old games i have, without having to switch to
windoze...

guitar pro 5 also plays well...

if anything goes wrong, i check the appdb in winehq.org...
usually there are guides and howtos to work around the problem...

Thanks for the info. That's good to know and it sounds like you're not
doing much of anything AMD64 specific?

Also, if you are using the newest version of Wine have you ever tried
setting it up from scratch with your apps instead of relying on
existing .wine directories? It seems to me that the wine developers
often want it both ways. They say that an app works, but it turns out
it works only with either an older version of Wine or a new version of
Wine but only with an older, prexisting .wine directory. When I go to
set up the same app on a new machine from scratch I cannot duplicate
what the AppDB says.

Just my experience.

Thanks again!

Cheers,
Mark

well...
i have never tried to set it up from scratch...so i don't know what

winecfg doesn't help?

what do you mean amd64 specific?

Today I got this:

$ equery d portaudio
[ Searching for packages depending on portaudio... ]
app-office/openoffice-2.2.0
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/equery", line 1754, in ?

AttributeError: 'list' object has no attribute 'join'

I had a quick look at /usr/bin/equery but I couldn't see anything
obvious. Is equery broken, or do I need to rebuild something?

Hmm... you don't mention which version of gentoolkit you have merged, but
here, with the newest 0.2.4_pre4 (merged today, but it might be a few
days old as I hadn't updated in a week or so), I get something similar.
portaudio is NOT merged here, but here's my output:

equery d portaudio
[ Searching for packages depending on portaudio... ]
media-sound/timidity++-2.13.2-r4
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/equery", line 1754, in ?
cmd.perform(local_opts)
File "/usr/bin/equery", line 1184, in perform
print "(" + \
AttributeError: 'list' object has no attribute 'join'

I have timidity++ merged, but not OOo, which might explain that
difference.

FWIW, portage was updated today as well: 2.1.2.4.

I tried querying something else merged, no problem, tried something else
NOT merged, no problem there either. Portaudio, however, problem.

I did a quick search of bugs, didn't find anything looking like it, so
you may wish to file one. Please reply with the bug number so I can add
my report too, plus CC and see how it's resolved.

Compiles just fine here with sandbox in FEATURES, but I also have userpriv

I haven't had sandbox problems with nvidia-drivers with any other version
either.

nope...
it won't compile if sandbox is used...
i didn't have any problems with previous kernels(<2.6.20)...

i looked at this bug report:
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=135745

and it seems that the problem hasn't been solved yet... :/

I coudn't find you bug, can you show the complete path?

If you are getting this error:

--- ACCESS VIOLATION SUMMARY
---
LOG FILE =
"/var/log/sandbox/sandbox-x11-drivers_-_nvidia-drivers-1.0.9755-r1-26242.log"

open_wr: /usr/src/linux-2.6.20-gentoo-r3/-.gcda
open_wr: /usr/src/linux-2.6.20-gentoo-r3/-.gcda

then use

FEATURES="-sandbox" emerge nvidia-drivers
to compile the drivers. This occurred to me in 2.6.20 kernels.

thx...
with FEATURES="-sandbox",nvidia-drivers compile without problems...
but i can't undestand why you get these errors without adding
FEATURES="-sandbox"... :/

and i have run:

but i get the same errors when trying to compile nvidia-drivers...
