[gentoo-dev] Re: Gentoo Foundation Elections

2008-02-12 Thread Jorge Manuel B. S. Vicetto

Hello again.

Hello fellow devs, users and Gentoo community.

The election for the Gentoo Foundation trustees has started. The
nomination period started today and lasts until Tuesday, February
12th. The election polls will be open from Wednesday February 13th to
Wednesday 27th. The elected trustees start their term on March 1st.

The election officials are Łukasz Damentko[1], Jorge Manuel B. S.
Vicetto[2], and Richard Freeman[3]. The infrastructure team contact
for the election is Shyam Mani[4]. The election officials have
published a page[5] with all the information on the election including
lists of voting members of the Gentoo Foundation.

nominations are open to the public; voting is limited to eligible
voters. Send all your nominations, acceptances and feedback to the
gentoo-nfp list[7]. The election officials have published on their

We ask all Foundation members and current devs to check if they are in
the correct lists and to confirm their details. In particular, devs
should check if they don't lack a join date in the ldap record[10].
To check one's details, a dev should logon to dev.gentoo.org and run
"perl_ldap -s ". Check infra's documentation for more info on
Gentoo LDAP service[11] and concrete examples[12] on how to change

If you have any doubts about the election or any corrections to the
page and lists, contact the election officials.

For the election officials,

This is a remainder that the nomination period will end at 23:59:59 UTC
today. If you want to run or to nominate someone else, please hurry,
send a mail to the gentoo-nfp list and have the nominee reply to the
list too.

If you are thinking on voting, make sure you check the list of voters
[13]. The election officials haven't received a single correction to
that list. So if you are not on that list and think you should be there,
hurry up as you also have up to 23:59:59 UTC today to let us know.

As far as i know, Opfer knows someone who will take it.

Two specific feature requests:
1. Check that every email address has a bugzilla account.
2. Check that metadata with a proxy maint also has a non-retired Gentoo
person listed.

What do you think about adding support to base.eclass for running
eautoreconf?

so instead of

src_unpack() {
unpack ${A}
cd "${A}"
eautoreconf
}

would just add

EAUTORECONF="yes"
inherit base

One of my staff members is currently being mentored to become a developer,
he is going to offer to maintain MIT Kerberos once he's done. We're running
Kerberos on Gentoo here and it's rather important to us. I'm not sure of
the current state of his mentorship, but he did just have his first baby
Monday so it's probably not the top thing on his mind :)...

Just a small update. For logistic reasons we need to push the voting
period 24 hours. Thus, the election will take place from 00H00 UTC
February 14th (Thursday) to 0H00 February 28th (Thursday).
We will send a mail with all the nominees and the list of voters after
the nomination period ends in over one hour.

There's a creative bugzilla query for it, but you have to test each one
individually. For mass-checking, I'd offer sets of the email addresses,
hashed, so that you have to know an address to check it against a static
list.

Isn't base.eclass considered pretty much dead and to be avoided? It's a
throwback to how eclasses were originally going to work, and it doesn't
correspond nicely to ebuild default functions.

The former is much clearer...I don't see the gain... also in the
former example you neglected to inherit autotools ;)

 If it is Heath, then I am on it to mentor him. He gave me some

*puts on Gnome hat*

In most of the ebuilds where we need to run eautoreconf, we usually
apply patches. I can't remember of an ebuild where we just run
eautoreconf on its own.

In the end, that won't help us at all (which is no reason not to have
this :) ) but I'm afraid that adding options for semi-hidden stuff can
come and bite us later, as we add more and more of those.

Cheers,
