Many types of applications, like games, would be installed as normal user as well.

Would it have any point to make portage user-installations into user space?-- tvali(e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; msn:

like net more than life, cause if i do something wrong, then people in
net will tell me that i do, so that i can fix it -- people in life will
tell others that i do.

There is a prefixed branch of portage that has this functionality.  
Its still in a heavy state of flux, and far from stable at this  
point, but the bulk of the grunt work has been done.


You can grab a snapshot from here [1] and and the corresponding  
ebuild repo from here [2]


Most of the people working on it can be found on the gentoo-alt  
mailing list and the #gentoo-alt IRC channel.
