[gentoo-user] boot nightmare. grub grub grub....

2005-02-26 Thread J. Patrick Campbell
i've been fighting this new install for 2 days now.
i've tried grub and lilo.
grub just scrolls 'GRUB' down the screen, no matter what do.
lilo prints 02 about 30 times and stops
i've tried 2 hard drives in this machine which was previously running XP.
it's a p4 1.7ghz with 512mb ram

here's my grub.conf

# (tmpfs is a dynamically expandable/shrinkable ramdisk, and will
# use almost no memory if not populated with files)
# Adding the following line to /etc/fstab should take care of this:

none/dev/shmtmpfs defaults

i boot from livecd 2004.3
i mount root, boot, proc, turn on swap and chroot.
then i run grub

root (hd0,0)
setup (hd0)

this runs ok with no errors.
on reboot it just scrolls GRUB.

i'm stuck!

it should be in your ~/.ut2004/ dir.

found that, thanks.

Hm, I had no probs with ut2004 when I tried it some time before.

Are you sure, that it is not a cooling or undervoltage-problem?

my voltages look fine but my Athlon XP 1800+ is running at 66 C.
I just shut down to check in the bios setup.
Too bad ASUS doesn't have linux utils for monitoring temps.

How can i cool this sucker down?
Looks like a new fan and heatsink are in order, what is the best?

Did either or both of you remember to re-run splashutils after compiling
your new kernels to create an initrd for the new kernel?

Btw, the guide/page you presumably used is Gensplash in 5 easy steps
 at
 http://dev.gentoo.org/~spock/projects/gensplash/archive/gensplash-in-5-easy-steps.txt

which can be found on the author's (Spock's) homepage at
http://dev.gentoo.org/~spock/ under the Projects=Gensplash heading at
 http://dev.gentoo.org/~spock/projects/gensplash/ . There is also a
how-to at Gentoo-Wiki.com, but naturally the author's own page is the
 first place to look.

i play ut2004 just fine.
i'm in the games group.
what error do you get for ut2004?
when i reboot my system i have to go into /dev and change the permissions of
nvidia* to my user.
maybe this is the problem you have?

i'm using xorg. is there any way to enable this so i can get
 fullscreen in
 vmware workstation?

yes i just fixed this problem on my machine, in xorg, by default
there is a section that says omit dga, im not at my machine
right now so i cant get you the exact line, its the only one
having to do with dga though, look in another thread on here
called vmware setup, its one of the last posts, you have to
comment that section out out and it will work actually i just
removed the omit, but someone else told me to comment it out.
 see what works for you.

 nick
 thanks,

Judging from the very low number of bug reports that we've had so far
 about
2.6.10 in comparison to previous kernels, I'd say this is one of the most
stable releases in a long time.
