I was never successful in getting APM or APCI to work on my Dell Notebook with
the 2.4.20 kernel. It does work with the 2.4.22 and 2.6 kernels.

 Hi,

I have just switched to gentoo from another distro (finally).
My problem is that I can't get APM working, and it would solve some
 annoying issues.

I have complied APM into the kernel (gentoo-sources 2.4.20-r8), but
during startup there is only a small sign:
 apm: BIOS not found.

 Anybody solved this?

First when it failed I had it compiled in.. along with

as a module.. got some nasty errors.

I recompiled with minimal PCMCIA options set and went
back to compiling it in the kernel rather than as a

and I can see it in iwconfig.

Now to configure it.. should be cake from here (uh huh..

  Brent,

If you are still compiling PCMCIA as a module, are you
loading the pcmcia_core module prior to loading the ds module?

BTW, when I have needed PCMCIA in the past, I have always
  compiled it statically.

OK I'm getting close to giving up and loading redhat
again I think. I changed my kernel configuration to
load PCMCIA support as a module and ran genkernel again.
Now at bootup time I get the following errors (repeatedly):

  /lib/modules/2.4.20-gentoo-r6/kernel/drivers/pcmcia/ds.o:
  init_module: Operation not permitted
Hint: insmod errors can be cause by incorrect module
parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters. You may
find more information in syslog or output from dmesg.

  insmod ds failed
  * Starting pcmcia...
cardmgr[819]: no pcmcia driver in /proc/devices

Anyone have any ideas? This is the 3rd time I've tried
rebuilding the kernel after tweaking the PCMCIA settings.

Also.. it would help if I could search the forums but
gentoo's forum system never sent me my activation email even
though I used the correct address. So if anyone from Gentoo
is reading this you may want to check on that.

Any ideas why this is happening? Im recompiling
the kernel now and specifying PCMCIA support as a module
instead of compiled directly into the kernel.

If I boot from the LiveCD and use the dopcmcia boot option
the light on my Linksys WPC11 v4 comes on and it sees the
card in the slot (not correctly of course.. since I havent
   gotten the driver working yet).

I got my driver over to the machine without MTools though..
I just formatted the floppy to ext2 fs on my dell poweredge

The server is running Redhat.. its a shame too.. Im thinking
of running Gentoo on that baby.. will Gentoo run on a 2.4Ghz Xeon?

Essentially what I did was remove the old version of OpenOffice first. Then,
when realizing I did not have enough disk space (you will need at least 4
gigs for OpenOffice to compile), I went and deleted files that portage used
to compile programs. After that, I had no problems installing OpenOffice.

I already have those, just need to set it up and unfortunately after
searching for apache 2 set up or apache 2 config I didn't find much.
However I sent an email to the apache users ML and help is on the way.

Look at the section about Apache in the Desktop Configuration manual at the
Gentoo web site on how to do this: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/desktop.xml

If your IP is dynamic how were you able to host a homepage? How have you
 managed that huge problem?

Technically, Comcast does not allow users to run servers though I do not know
how they woudl detect it. Technically, you can still run a server and a web
site with a dynamic URL. You just have to pay particular attention since
some IPs tend to change once a month. I suppose you could write a script
that will inform you when your IP changed.

Good luck,

I think I am getting closer to getting my pcmcia card to work. I was able to
get the required modules for my pcmcia nic card to be detected finally.
Still, during start up my computer cannot detect the cardmanager. I will
have to mess around with the /etc/conf.d/net file I think.

On a positive note, ALSA is working:) Wow, it is awesome!!!

Tom:

I compiled all the pcmcia stuff as modules. I then emerged pcmcia-cs and
update-modules. When I lsmod, all the same modules that I use in the 2.4
kernel are there. They also load up with no problem. I am pretty sure that
I have all the necessary modules compiled in the kernel.

Do you have your /etc/init.d/net.* scripts auto-starting?

How do I that? I think I do???

I am beginning to suspect that my /etc/pcmcia/config.opts may be the problem.
During load up, card manager cannot find the sockets. Here is what they are
for the 2.4 kernel:

# System resources available for PCMCIA devices

include port 0x100-0x4ff, port 0xc00-0xcff
include memory 0xc-0xf
include memory 0xa000-0xa0ff, memory 0x6000-0x60ff

This is really weird. I got to work. In the forums, someone recommended
commenting out ds in /etc/init.d/pcmcia and adding Yenta. It is really weird
but it worked and I am not sure if anyone knows why. Cool.

Now Shorewall does not work. I had to remove it from start up. And ALSA is
too damn loud:)

Thanks a lot. I have only used menuconfig to compile my kernels. This was
the first time I ever used xconfig. What a beauty I might add.

Oh yeah, the 2.6 kernel is now working!!! I did make one more mistake by
enabling pcmcia as a module when I should have left it unchecked so the 2.6
kernel could not detect my nic card. Easily solved by recompiling the
kernel. I also forgot to re-emerge the ip_tables. I am going to see if I
can get ALSA to work too. I was unsuccessful in the 2.4 kernel.

Thanks for help. I hope to finish this sometime in the afternoon.

Hey Kwame:

Hate to tell you this but Gentoo already fulfilled its quota of Suse converts
to Gentoo this year. Try next year. Now, if you really want to use Gentoo,
you can say your are a Windows user. There are no quotas for them:)

Seriously, give Gentoo a try. I used Red Hat a little off and on for a year.
When I decided to give Gentoo a try, I was nervous about the installation
too. They were ill founded. If you start from Stage 3, it takes roughly one
and a half hours to get a working system. The instructions manual online for
the install is excellant. It did take me a couple of tries but that was
because of my mistakes, not the manuals. I technically had it working on the
second attempt but the X-windows looked funny so I thought I installed it
wrong. I installed Gentoo a third time and got the same funny x-windows
looked funny so I went and asked for help at the from the local linux support
group. Turns out that x-windows always looks like that. I installed Gentoo
successfully.

Plan on devoting 48-72 hours to compiling all the programs and applications
that you would need. My poor notebook was on nonstop during that time but it
survived. I am now using Linux 99.999 percent of the time.

Good luck.

Thanks Tom. I will give it a try. I have a feeling I will be messing around
with this until I get it right. I read at the forum about a recommendation
in emerging pcmcia-cs too just in case.

I think another problem is that under the 2.4 kernel, my nic card was
identified as eth1. not eth0. I am beginning to think that the 2.6 kernel
may recognize eth0 as the correct card as again. I plan to change
/etc/conf.d/net when I boot back into the 2.6 kernel to see if this is the
culprit. Can't do it now for obvious reasons (2.4 recognizing eth1).

I will give this a try.

 Kevin,

Try this (from my kernel .config):

 #
 # PCMCIA/CardBus support
 #
 CONFIG_PCMCIA=y
 CONFIG_YENTA=y
 CONFIG_CARDBUS=y
 # CONFIG_I82092 is not set
 # CONFIG_TCIC is not set

You could also enable any of the above (or all for that matter), and load
them after-the-fact. At a minimum, you'll need CONFIG_PCMCIA enabled, and
at least one bridge/bus driver. My wireless card happens to use the YENTA
driver, so technically, I could disable CARDBUS in the above config. On my
 'round-tu-it' list ;-)

Problem with the 2.6 kernel (at least at this point in time, and with
reference to Gentoo and their ebuilds) is that you must have PCMCIA enabled
before PCMCIA-CS will install. And if PCMCIA-CS sees that PCMCIA is enabled
in the kernel, all it will do is add the PCMCIA utilities. So if the
current kernel doesn't support your bus/bridge or driver, you can't get it
from PCMCIA-CS. I suspect we'll see (a) vendors addressing the situation,
and (b) a PCMCIA-CS update as soon as 2.6 gets closer to reality.

 Best,
 /tom

  another attempt this week.

Kevin- Here's a copy of a post I nade on the Gentoo forums about a basic
method for getting 2.6 working. I realize your problem is mainly the
 config part.
 ---
--- I've been downloading from kernel.org, and getting mm patches
for each 2.6 version, with excellent results. Here's my method, for 2.4 or
2.6 kernels. I never compile as root in /usr/src anymore. I made a
/home/wrc/kernel directory, and untar there, then cd as user to the
linux-2.6.0-testx directory, and do a normal:

(Optional: apply mm patch (or others I might wish to try)
 make mrproper
 make xconfig
(Optional: after xconfig, edit Makefile cflags and console output for 2.6.
They have compile output silent by default. I'll post my edits if anyone
 wishes)
 make clean
 make bzImage
 make modules
 THEN SU TO ROOT
 make modules_install
 mount /boot
 cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/linux-2.6.0-testx-mmx (I use no System.map,
 or initrd)
Edit grub with nano -w /boot/grub/grub.conf
and add your new kernel stanza to grub.conf, then reboot to new kernel.

Works for me every time, with no problems whatsoever. I've had mixed
results with genkernel, and any Gentoo kernels, so I've settled on the
above method of choice. I do however, run very lean systems, and others
might need support for scsi, drivers, etc that I don't use. But for the
basics, this works very well, and never touches your working setup.

Re: [gentoo-user] 2.6.0-test8 + Inspiron

2003-10-23 Thread Kevin Miller, Jr.
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

Thanks Robert:

 We need to know:

 1. Did the compile itself error out (and at what point), or did it compile,
and reboot not succeed? Next time, if compile fails, save the history (in
console, under menu-edit-save history as), and post the last section where
 it stops.

I remember it errored out immediately after I saved my menuconfig
configuration. It freaked me out and when I restarted my computer, my
computer acted strange so I removed mm-sources and it worked fine after that.

 2. I looked up the 8000, (can't find 8100), and they have ATI Mobility M4
or NVIDIA GeForce2 Go. With ATI, compiling into 2.6 works fine (I use
Radeon 9000 Pros on all my boxes). Nvidia is a different animal. We need to
know which one you have. If the compile and install succeeds, but on boot
you get a black screen, it might be an xconfig problem. If you get
compiling errors, its likely a kernel config problem, followed by an x
 problem.

My notebook has the ATI Mobility Radeon 7500. There was no driver for it with
the 2.4 kernels so I used a generic ATI driver. I do not have problems with
it.

 3. I noticed in your 2.4 config, you have lots of things supported as
 modules, and compiled in, like:

 SCSI

I need that for my zip drive.

 ISDN

Not sure if I need that.

 infrared stuff

Definately do not need that.

In file systems, you have all the XFS as Y. Do you use that?

I think I answered yes since the instructions said if you are not sure, answer
yes. I do not use it though.

 USB- do you need everything?

I guess I just need it for my printer, zip drive and mouse.

In # Native Language Support, all things are modules, get rid of all you
 don't use.

Will do.

If you use these things, fine, but in short, with a 2.6 kernel, get rid of
ANYTHING you don't need. I never had success with 2.5, or 2.6, until I
realized virtually anything could cause inexplicable failures. Took me 2
months to hone it down to a rock stable bare-bones .config- now it works
perfectly, first time, with every new test-x, on my hardware, and I'm still
refining it, and add things on recompiles. Always save a working config,
and name it! The deal is, don't expect everything to work! Get it so it
works with your most important things, and accept the fact it's not
 perfect.

I started with the 2.4 kernel early last month. My first task was to get my
ethernet card working. Eventually I got my zip drive and printer to work but
I could not get ALSA up and running. Dell Inspiron 8100s use the maestro3
driver which I cannot seem to get working.

 ADDENDUM:
After you've done it a few times, a kernel recompile is very fast, and
safe, if you compile your kernels as USER, not in /usr/src, as root.

Umm, I am still doing things in root. A bad habit I know but this is sort of
my test bed. Right now my computer is partitioned between Gentoo and Windows
but in a couple of months, I want to re-install Gentoo from Stage 1 for my
whole notebook. I have stopped using Windows.

I will try the compile per your instructions and let you know what happens.

preferred mm-sources over the development-sources. As soon as OpenOffice.org

Since I want to keep my 2.4.22 kernels, what should I do to make sure I do not
lose the config files for these kernels? When I upgraded from 2.4 to 2.4.22,
I remember removing the old configs in /usr/src/linux. Will I do the same.
I read in the a couple people mentioning to cd into /usr/src/linux-beta and

Try the development-sources first. mm-sources has patches for better
desktop performance but often breaks things. If you try the
development-sources first you will at least know what breaks and what
doesn't before getting even more experimental.

Also, if I add the 2.6 kernel, will it affect my other 2.4.22 kernels
(ac-sources and ck-sources)? Is there something I should do before I
  compile the 2.6 kernel?

Everything that you need has all the proper deps put in place in portage.
If you install manually, check one of the ebuilds to see what deps are
 required.

What specifically do you mean by old configs? The complete configuration
file for any kernel is stored at /usr/src/linux*/.config. If you keep that
file then it is all you need unless you want to recompile pcmcia-cs for
your 2.4.22 kernel. To recompile packages that add kernel functionality for
 a specific kernel you need to keep certain other files (not sure which;
easiest to keep the entire tree). Before recompiling said packages, ensure
that /usr/ src/linux points to the kernel you want to compile for.

Just delete the sysklogd init script and re-run depscan.sh

Re: [gentoo-user] [Q] usb - keyboard and mouse

2003-10-03 Thread Kevin Miller, Jr.
The manual on how to set up a desktop may be your best resource here. I got
the below info from: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/desktop.xml

Kevin

Configuring a USB Mouse

A USB mouse is your friend on a high resolution screen. The kernel takes care
of the scaling so you don't have to move your mouse five times across the pad
to make it across the screen.

The first thing that has to be done is the installation of the kernel modules.
The modules that will be needed for a USB mouse to work are usbmouse,
mousedev, hid, usbcore, usb-uhci, and input. After the necessary kernel
configuration is done, insmod the modules.

Note: Use either usbmouse OR hid. If you install both, mouse will stop
working.

Note: When configuring the Input Core support for the mouse, make sure to
enter the screen resolution that you will be using in X. This makes the
scaling all pretty and correct.

Now, unplug the mouse, and plug it back in, and check your kernel log for a
message that looks something like this

Code listing 2.6: Kernel Message

hub.c: USB new device connect on bus1/1, assigned device number 2
input0,hiddev0: USB HID v1.00 Mouse [Microsoft Microsoft IntelliMouse Optical]
on usb1:2.0

Now that the mouse is detected, check /dev/input to make sure that your mouse
is there and working.

Code listing 2.7: Checking for USB Mouse

# cd /dev/input
# cat mice
Move your mouse when you cat the device, you should see a lot
of garbage. To exit, simply press control-C.

Once the mouse is properly detected and installed, now we have to tell X to
use the USB mouse. All that is required here is a slight change to what
device X uses for the mouse.

Code listing 2.8: Editing XF86Config

# cp /etc/X11/XF86Config /etc/X11/XF86Config.working
# nano -w /etc/X11/XF86Config

Code listing 2.9: Pointer section of XF86Config

Section InputDevice

# Identifier and driver

Identifier Mouse1
Driver mouse
Option ProtocolIMPS/2
Option Device /dev/input/mice
Option ZAxisMapping 4 5

Okay, restart X, and the mouse should be working!

Don't forget to add the modules that your mouse uses to
modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.4.

Code listing 2.10: Adding entries to modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.4

# nano -w /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.4
 # We will add the following lines to the file.
mousedev
hid
usbcore

Re: [gentoo-user] Firewall Problems

2003-10-01 Thread Kevin Miller, Jr.
No luck. I recompiled my kernel and still cannot modprobe these modules. The
iptables seems to work though.

Kevin

 modprobe: Can't locate module ip_conntrack
 modprobe: Can't locate module ip_conntrack_ftp
 modprobe: Can't locate module ip_conntrack_irc

I think if this was working before and stopped working after the upgrade
then all that you need to do is remerge iptables again and reboot or you
will need to manually add these to the kernel via genkernel --conifg
(that is assuming that you used genkernel to compile the kernel for you.)
, which opens a menuconfig editor for your kernel.

Then goto Network Options-IP: Netfilter Configuration--- and make
sure that the following are modules or m's.
M Connection tracking (required for masq/NAT)
 M FTP protocol support
 M IRC protocol support

I don't know anything about the type of firewall that your running and
woudl thing that for any error messages that your receiving from your
firewall that you direct your questions to a list thats maintained by the
firewall that your using for a faster response.

Funnily enough I'm doing this on my own system as we speak :) Assuming
you mean remove the packages and extra files as well:

To find the package names that you have installed for the kernel:
 # qpkg -I -v gentoo-sources

 Then unmerge the packages:
 # emerge unmerge package

This will remove most of the source files, but not the compiled binary
files. To remove them just go into /usr/src and rm -rf the directories
of kernel you don't need anymore.

Then mount /boot and go into there and remove the actual kernel files
 that are un-needed.

As a note, I generally keep two at all times, just in case. IE:
Currently I have ac-sources-2.4.22-ac4 and -ac1 installed and available
on boot, but anything before that is gone. This is good for well,
 if you're paranoid anyway :)

Re: [gentoo-user] Removing Old Kernels

2003-10-01 Thread Kevin Miller, Jr.
Thanks everyone for all of your help. I successfully removed the kernel from
my computer. I joted down what you guys told me to do and saved in in a text
document. Figured some of you would like a copy for the next noob:)

To unmerge an old kernel, follow these simple guidelines:

1. If you do not have gentools installed on your computer yet, you will need
to emerge it. If you do not know what this is, you probably have no
 installed it. To install gentoolkits:

#emerge gentoolkit

2. To find out which package names you have installed for each kernel:

# qpkg -I -v gentoo-sources

Your result may look somthing similar to this:

sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.4.20-r5 *
sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.4.20-r7 *

Note:
a. The above uses a CAPITAL I as in Indiana not L as in Louisiana.
b. If you are using another kernel source, just replace
'gentoo-sources'
with your preferred source, i.e. vanilla-sources

3. To unmerge the packages:

# emerge unmerge package

Since I want to unmerge the kernel: gentoo-sources-2.4.20-r5, I will input
this:

# emerge unmerge gentoo-sources-2.4.20-r5 *

4. So far, you have removed most of the source files, but not the compiled
binary files. To remove these files, go into /usr/src and rm -rf the

directories of kernel you don't need anymore. In this example, you would
look for all files that relate to gentoo-sources-2.4.20-r5.

5. Next, mount /boot and go the /boot directory. Delete all the files
related to the kernel version you just deleted. When you are done,
 umount /boot.

6. Finally, go into the /lib/modules/ and delete all the files related to the
 kernel version you just deleted.

[gentoo-user] Firewall Problems

2003-09-30 Thread Kevin Miller, Jr.
After spending most of the day trying to get either Firestarter of KMyFirewall
to work, I am getting closer to having a firewall set up. I am still having
problems though. Below is the input after I run firestarter, configure with
the wizard and then start the firewall:
---
romulan root # firestarter
NETFILTER detected
Firewall script saved as /etc/firestarter/firewall.sh
Adding Firestarter startup hook to /etc/dhcpcd/dhcpcd-eth1.exe
Could not write firestarter DHCP hook: No such file or directory
modprobe: Can't locate module ip_conntrack
modprobe: Can't locate module ip_conntrack_ftp
modprobe: Can't locate module ip_conntrack_irc

For the first part, I can eliminate the error if I choose eth0 as my network
device but for some reason, it is actually located at eth1 after I upgraded
my kernel from 2.4.20-gentoor5 to 2.4.20-gentoo-r7. I am not sure why it
changed from eth0 to eth1 so I guess I will need to know how to correct this
error (I do have two pcmcia slots but only the eth0 is in use). When I do
select the etho network device I can run firestarter but I still get the
modprobe errors and this error:

No DHCP client configuration found

The firewall will not be loaded automatically on a lease renewal. Please make
sure the external interface is configured properly or deselect the DHCP
option if you are using static settings.

Now for the second part of my problem, I am not sure how I can add all the
above modules to my kernel. I recompiled the kernel several times. Where in

 Works for me

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

 [ebuild U ] sys-apps/baselayout-1.8.6.10-r1 [1.8.6.8-r1]

If this is an initial install did you try emerge system first? Try this:
emerge -p system
without the quotes of course and with an internet connection.

 What happens?

If that still isn't working then I would emerge sync and then
emerge -up system to see what
you need and then emerge -u system

[gentoo-user] Post Install Questions

2003-09-11 Thread Kevin Miller, Jr.
Okay, I have installed Gentoo 1.4 on my notebook. I have two problems to
get passed now. Be advised, I am a Gentoo newbie and it took nearly a week
to get this installed all the way (on my 4th attempt I might add).

Problem 1: I screwed up on the grub.conf. I forgot to add the root (hd0,0)
line. I tried to edit it but as I saved it, I was told that grub.conf was
only a read file. How can I edit grub.conf? Do I need to mount something?
Note, I have only used Unix and Linux for a year now.

Problem 2: Though I am able to boot Gentoo after some editing the above in
the grub, I now cannot get Gentoo to fully load. It freezes after starting
the pcmcia. Here is what I get:

Starting pcmcia
cardmgr[822]: watching 2 sockets
cardmgr[822]: starting, version is 3.2.4
cardmgr[822]: socket 1: 3Com 3ccfe575C71 Fast EtherLink XL
cardmgr[822]: executing: 'modprobe cb_enabler'
cardmgr[822]: executing: 'modprobe 3c575_cb'
It stops right here and I have to reboot the computer.

I know there was some discussion on Gentoo's lack of support for pcmcia but
it was a bit beyond my head. Also, I still could not get my computer
connected online (which probably has something to do with the above pcmcia).

[gentoo-user] Unsuccessful first attempt but a great learning experience

2003-09-07 Thread Kevin Miller, Jr.
Okay, I attempted to install Gentoo 1.4 today. I managed to get the
partitions okay. I had several problems that arose:

1. I could not automatically configure the Network connection with
net-setup eth0. I think this is Comcast's fault since they make it
difficult for Linux user's to connect online. They only support Windows and
Apple users. Any Comcast users who were successful in connecting with the
internet?

2. Since I had the LiveCDs, I did not worry having a network connection.
Or so I thought. I tried to extract the Portage snapshot from the CD.
Unfortunately, I do not know what datestamp of the filename is. Where can I
find this?

3. The other problem that arose was when I tried to get back into Windows
(I have a dual-boot partion). I could not since I was always brought to
grub. Eventually, I had to reboot from the Windows XP CD and delete the
grub partition (plus the other partitions). Is there anyway I can avoid
doing this in the future? I liked Red Hat's grub and I am hopefully that
after fully installing Gentoo 1.4 that there will be a similar grub. Until
then, I really need to get access to my files in Windows and Dreamweaver.

It was a bit frustrating but I think once I get the datestamp problem
figured out, it will not be a problem. Like I said in the subject, this has
been an interesting learning experience.

You should be able to do that with the demo version.

Does anyone know where I can get a reasonably priced copy of Partition
Magic? When I deleted my other partitions in Windows, I inadvertently
deleted the Linux partition I created with PM a year ago. Damn
Microsoft!!!
Got fix that before I can reinstall Gentoo:(

I'm a stage 1 guy, have been since my very first installation. Depends
on how comfortable with linux you are, and how much bandwidth and time
you have. Then there is the geekiness/masochist aspect :o)

It really makes no difference; you'll only do an install once, unlike
RedHat. After a years worth of incremental updates you'll be in the
same shape whether starting from Stage 1 or 3. Yes, it will take a
couple of days starting from Stage 1. I started from Stage 1 about 2
years ago. I might do Stage 3 today now that it is available.

[gentoo-user] Gentoo Linux 1.4 General Install Questions

2003-08-25 Thread Kevin Miller, Jr.
I just purchased a copy of Gentoo Linux 1.4 to replace Red Hat 9.0. I have
been using Linux off and on for a year now but the Red Hat distro could not
convince me to switch over to Linux full time. Thus, I ran Windows and I
used SSH secure shell to access my Unix accounts.

First question. My notebook has a duel boot partition running both Windows
XP Pro and Red Hat Linux 9.0. Will I be able to install Gentoo right over
the Red Hat partition? Honestly, I never plan to use Red Hat again. I will
definately not miss their surveys to keep my membership current.

Second question which I am sure many of you asked. From which tarball stage
should I install? During the demo at Indiana University, they started with
stage3 since they told us it takes a couple of days of compiling before you
can get a working systems with Gentoo. Is still still the norm for 1.4? I
will be installing Gentoo on a Dell Inspirion 8100 notebook with a Pentium
III 1 GHz Processor with 512 megs of RAM. Which stage did most of you start
from?

I have a feeling I will be asking more questions once my CDs arrive.

Any responses will be greatly appreciated,
