I've found the sun j2sdk1.4.1_02 to be good. The 1.3 jdk doesn't include JSSE (aka SSL and HTTPS) so if you need that feature go with 1.4.
IBM seems to have stopped with 1.3. I believe IBM was going for speed and did pretty good with that aspect (also check out jikes for compile speed).
