Hi!
I'm trying to compile Kernel 2.6.2-rc2, but I can't enter this menu:

Device Drivers - Plug And Play Support

These are some of my kernel options that I think are related to the problem:

- ---
[*] Prompt for development and/or incomplete code/drivers
[*] Select only drivers expected to compile cleanly
[*] Select only drivers that don't need compile-time external firmware

[*] Support for hot-pluggable devices

  Support for PCI Hotplug (EXPERIMENTAL)

  Hotplug firmware loading support

I don't know how to solve the problem, if someone can help me..

Hi!

It happens to me a strange thing when I type dmesg at a console.
When I have the 2.4 series kernel and I connect an usb pen (for example) and I
type dmesg I can see the event: I can see if a driver recognized my usb-pen
or not claimed by any active driver.
This doesn't happen in my 2.6 series. I thought that it was only for a module
called: Hotplug firmware loading support, but this doesn't change
anything...

Does anyone know this problem and can help me understanding more about the 2.6

Have you switched on the USB Device Filesystem support in the kernel?

I already have it enabled

I tried GPRSEC, but I can't find it and when I connect my usb link to my
laptop and type dmesg everytime I obtain:
hub.c: new USB device 00:03.2-1, assigned address 2
usb.c: USB device 2 (vend/prod 0x421/0x800) is not claimed by any active
  driver.

Is the usb_serial module loaded? It might not get loaded automatically when
you plug in the phone. Have you enabled Automatic kernel module loading in
the 2.6 kernel? Also, you might try using hotplug, if you're not doing so
 already. (emerge hotplug /etc/init.d/hotplug start)
What phone are you using? It might be that it doesn't use the standard
serial connection, but rather something different. However, I find it quite
unlikely, since IIRC the use of a serial connection is part of the ETSI
 standard for GPRS phones.

My phone is Nokia 7210, lots of programs says that it is not tested yet...
Today I'll try something new and I'll write you more

I also can't connect my USB-PEN to it still I have kernel 2.6.1, while
  when I have 2.4* I can...

When running 2.4* check which USB driver is running the pen. Then try to
find the same, or a similar driver in 2.6*

I use GPRS all the time. I have an Ericsson R600 plugged into a serial
port. I'm not sure what kernel options you'd need to switch on to make it
 work through USB.
Basically it works just like an ordinary serial modem (you send AT
commands, it connects and you set up a ppp link), so compiling USB Serial
Converter support in the kernel, or as a module might help. Of course,
you'll need ppp support as well.

As for the connection itself, I use a separate pppd config file and connect
script and connect by issuing pppd file /etc/ppp/gprs. I use nodetach so
that the connection stays in the console (it's unreliable so it's good to
have a simple way to restart it) and hang up with Ctrl-C.

My configuration files are as follows:
 /etc/ppp/gprs:
/dev/ttyS0#You'd obviously replace this with the USB device
 115200#This should work for USB

nodetach #To keep it in the console
debug #Handy in the testing phase

receive-all #My phone needs this, not sure about yours
noccp #My phone doesn't support IP header compression

usepeerdns#Might not work, but handy if it does
defaultroute #Makes the computer actually use the connection

connect /etc/ppp/gprs-connect #Fir setting the connect script

 /etc/ppp/gprs-connect: (with executable rights)
 #!/bin/sh
 /usr/sbin/chat \
 ECHOOFF \
   ATZ \
 OK 'AT+CGDCONT=1,IP,internet' \
 OK AT+CGQMIN=1,0,0,0,0,0 \
 OK AT+CGQREQ=1,0,0,0,0,0 \
 OK ATD*99# \
 CONNECT

While testing you might want to try switching ECHO to ON in the connect
script. If those files don't do the trick, send the output and we'll see
what we can do. Also, IIRC there are a few fairly good howtos for
linux+GPRS floating around the net. Don't remember any URLs though.

I'm almost certain that the correct module is USB Serial Converter Support.
On 2.6 kernels it can be found under the USB Support menu, in the USB Port
drivers section. It's probably the same or very similar with 2.4 kernels.
In the .config file it's called CONFIG_USB_SERIAL and I'm fairly certain
that the module would be called usb_serial.
If you've tried that module and it didn't work, I don't know what might.

I tried almost any of that modules in usb-serial, but nothing.
I think that my problem is the correct port that identify my USB port:
/dev/usb show no files
I tried GPRSEC, but I can't find it and when I connect my usb link to my

The common theme appears to suggest you don't have a GLX driver
running. GLX is the X's interface to OpenGL, a popular graphics
 library.

Could you please tell me more about your hardware? For example, what is
the brand and version of your graphics card?

If you have an nvidia based card, the section labelled 'Configuring your
NVIDIA Card' of this document might help:
 http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/desktop.xml

If you have an ati card the following may be useful:
 http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/desktop.xml

If you still have problems type glxinfo into a console and see what it
 throws back.

 Hope that helps,

 -Ben.

All I've seen so far is about recompiling xfree (which is rather long, at

but the module needs to be loaded. Add

Load glx # OpenGL X protocol interface

to the section Module in the file /etc/X11/XF86Config and that should work
 (after restarting X of course).

 Hope this helps.

 Fred

[gentoo-user] DMA while booting

2004-01-02 Thread Mauro Arnoldi
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi to anyone!

While I boot my Laptop with Gentoo Linux I notice this warning while checking
the filesystem

* The dma of your hard drive is turned off *
* This may really slow down the fsck process*

My fstab:

/dev/hda2 /boot reiserfsnoatime 1 1
/dev/hda3 / reiserfsnoatime 1 2
/dev/hda7 /usrreiserfsnoatime 1 2
/dev/hda8 /mnt/vmware reiserfsnoatime 1 2

Is it possible to enable DMA before this check so that I can scan my
partitions faster?

This package also conflicts with dev-libs/9libs, so I uninstalled it..

Can anyone understand the problem and help me?

Thanks!!

[gentoo-user] Compiling progress

2003-12-03 Thread Mauro Arnoldi
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

Hi! I'm new to Gentoo Linux, I hope you will understand my horrible english..

I know that any new program needs to be compiled, but sometimes it takes a
really long time (mozilla, openoffice.)

Is there any expedient that let me know the compiling progress? Or the time
that will take to compile a packet?

Thanks

So that's not possible :,-(

Ok, thanks!

There is a tool - genlop - that lists information about
compile times but it doesn't predict - it only looks at
past compiles. Once you have some compiles you can use
it. Other than that ask others on the list what their
time is for a package and what kind of system they have.
Genlop shows my OpenOffice 7 hours on a dual AMD 1.9 with
 2 gig of memory.
