[gentoo-user] boot sector

2003-09-10 Thread Mike Bellemare
I'm about to loose my boot sector because of a re-installation of a certain OS
and was wondering the steps to get it back with the live CD(which i've heard
that could be used as a boot disk).
Do I have to mount everything and chroot in my hd system or i can perform it only
by mounting /boot (/dev/hda1) to use my grub.conf file and do the grub-install
/dev/hda from
the live CD?

thanks

[gentoo-user] Mozilla Firebird dependencies...

2003-09-03 Thread Mike Bellemare

Hi, I'm totally in love with this software. Being a new browser, its evolution is
pretty quick ans im trying to follow it to see improvement that is done.

Today i tried to emerge -u mozilla-firebird but this came up

[output]
[EMAIL PROTECTED] mike # emerge -u mozilla-firebird
Calculating dependencies ...done!

!!! Error: the dev-perl/ExtUtils-MakeMaker-6.05-r6 package conflicts with another
package.

!!!both can't be installed on the same system together.
!!!Please use 'emerge --pretend' to determine blockers.
[/output]

so i did...here's the output

[output]
[EMAIL PROTECTED] mike # emerge -up mozilla-firebird

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild U ] sys-devel/patch-2.5.9 [2.5.4-r5]
[ebuild U ] media-libs/freetype-2.1.4 [2.1.2-r2]
[ebuild U ] media-libs/fontconfig-2.2.1 [2.1]
[ebuild U ] media-libs/libpng-1.2.5-r4 [1.2.5-r2]
[blocks B ] dev-perl/ExtUtils-MakeMaker-6.05-r6 (from pkg dev-lang/perl-5.8
.0-r12)
[ebuild U ] sys-apps/groff-1.18.1-r3 [1.18.1-r2]
[ebuild N] sys-devel/gnuconfig-20030708
[ebuild U ] sys-devel/libtool-1.4.3-r1 [1.4.1-r10]
[ebuild U ] sys-libs/db-3.2.9-r7 [3.2.9-r2]
[ebuild N] dev-lang/perl-5.8.0-r12
[ebuild U ] x11-misc/ttmkfdir-3.0.9 [3.0.4]
[ebuild U ] app-arch/unzip-5.50-r2 [5.50-r1]
[blocks B ] x11-libs/xft (from pkg x11-base/xfree-4.3.0-r2)
[ebuild U ] x11-base/xfree-4.3.0-r2 [4.2.1-r2]
[ebuild U ] x11-libs/xft-2.0.1-r2 [2.0.1]
[ebuild U ] dev-java/java-config-0.2.8-r2 [0.2.7]
[blocks B ] net-www/mozilla-firebird-bin (from pkg net-www/mozilla-firebird-
0.6.1)
[ebuild U ] dev-util/pkgconfig-0.15.0 [0.14.0]
[ebuild U ] dev-libs/glib-2.2.2 [2.2.0]
[ebuild U ] dev-libs/libIDL-0.8.2 [0.8.0]
[ebuild U ] dev-util/intltool-0.26 [0.22]
[ebuild U ] x11-libs/gtk+-1.2.10-r10 [2.2.0]
[ebuild U ] dev-java/blackdown-jdk-1.4.1 [1.4.1_beta]
[ebuild N] net-www/mozilla-firebird-0.6.1
[/output]

so the first block is because dev-perl/ExtUtils-MakeMaker-6.05-r6 can be installed
with pkg dev-lang/perl-5.8.0-r12 but MozillaFirebird need perl-5.8.0-r12 to be
installed wich can not because of a dependencie problem.

How do i handle that??

thanks for answering and sorry for the length of the e-mail

[gentoo-user] iptables and nmap results

2003-08-10 Thread Mike Bellemare

hi
I've build myself a firewall with iptables.
it's working great and all, except that using nmap to check how to see if i could see
some difference on the OS detection option, and it's doing none.

Remote operating system guess: Linux kernel 2.4.18 - 2.4.20 (X86)

as i read somewhere on the internet, it's more secure if you're hiding the OS running
on the web server.
Does anyone knows how to block my server to deliver such informations?

i'd like too to know if there's a way to make iptables to log unsucceful and succesful
connections on my IP adress.

another thing...does anyone has some programs or ways to check if my server is secure
(on the connection side).

thanks

Re: [gentoo-user] gentoo and laptops (good one)

2003-08-10 Thread Mike Bellemare

im using imps/2...and i have no idea either why opening the file solve the problem but
it does...another thing
i've notice is that if my wheel start going crazy, if i kill X, my keypad stops
working and bang, im good for a
hard reboot with the power button :(

as for the second entry for the mouse, do you mean in /dev?
if yes, no i didnt...(im gonna try)

[gentoo-user] gentoo and laptops (good one)

2003-08-08 Thread Mike Bellemare
Hi sorry for the other message,

I've got a couple of questions...

each time i boot my laptop, ive got to open /etc/X11/XF86Config as root and close it.
if i fail to do that, my mice (the touchpad and the ps/2 mouse) keep going on the
lower left corner and doing like a right-button mouse click...anyone knows a way to
solve this?

one thing i would like to know is how to make gentoo perform an hdparm -d 1 /dev/hda
automaticaly on bootup cause now, ive got to do it manualy upon each bootup, same goes
for internet, i got to perform an dhcpcd eth0, i tried things with rc-update but none
achieve to solve my problems...

is there a way to know how much power my batterie got left? (somewhere in /proc?)

[gentoo-user] comments on ebuilds

2003-07-21 Thread Mike Bellemare
is there a place where gentoo users can rate the several programs that are in the
portage tree?...like on the online package database accessible from the website, when
you click on a package theres a rating or things like that ( a little like on Cnet) so
other gentoo users could be guided when looking for a particular kind of software.

[gentoo-user] Tiny annoying problems

2003-04-01 Thread Mike Bellemare

Hi,

I will begin with a question, is it good to make a emerge -u system and how often
should i do one?
I heard it was dangerous to upgrade the system...
i heard if it aint broke, dont fix it on the channel gentoo, but what's the point of
gentoo if not for upgrades and
up2date packages...I would have stayed with Debian if i wanted old stable packages.

second, after an emerge -u world, some permissions changed on certain folder(well, i
guess cause it was working just before), and chmod doesnt even change them
i get no error message but the permissions stays the same...
even a folder with read permission for everybody cant be accessed besides logged in as
root.

thanks all...

M.B
