I have a p3 1.2 notebook and compile times from stage1 are not even close to
24hrs.

[gentoo-user] firefox compiles, won't start

2004-02-15 Thread usingflux
Sorry if this has already been covered. I have just now subscribed to this list and
did not check the archinves.

I am having problems starting firefox. This is the error message when attempting to
start from the command line:

bash-2.05b$ firefox
/usr/bin/firefox: line 106: /firefox: No such file or directory

I ran the full path /usr/lib/MozillaFirefox/firefox and it started fine. Thanks.

did you emerge firefox (compiled) or firefox-bin (binary). If the
latter, it will be in /opt/firefox.../firefox (don't know the exact
name, since I download directly from mozilla land), and /opt/firefox...
is most assuredly not on your $PATH. Either execute
 /full/path/to/firefox or create a /usr/local/bin/firefox symlink to
/full/path/to/firefox to execute by the name firefox only.

[gentoo-user] Live CD for 2.6 beta 9

2003-11-01 Thread usingflux
Wondering if it is better to start from scratch with a 2.6 kernel
live CD, or if it is possible to install gentoo, and a 2.6 kernel
starting from one of the older CDs that I already have downloaded.

Re: [gentoo-user] Live CD for 2.6 beta 9

2003-11-01 Thread usingflux
The laptop I am using needs to be repartitioned, so I dumped all the contents into
an external. I thought I would use the opportunity to try out 2.6b9 as most feel
it is stable enough (and fast as hell it appears). Another side effect is that
I can also compile with better cflags than I did before I gathered new information.
I know I don't have to reinstall just to do these two things, but since I am
repartitioning and essantially starting from a clean disk I thought it good
opportunity.

I guess the question becomes, does a installing from a 2.4 livecd, stage1 install
have any disadvantages over using a 2.6 disc, when set on using a 2.6 kernel. As
I alredy have a 2.4 disc burned, if it makes no difference, I would save my time
and skip downloading a new disc.

If you want to install from 2.6, more power to you, but I don't really
see the point. Especially if you're just reinstalling because you want
to use a 2.6 kernel on the LiveCD.

Re: [gentoo-user] slightly OT: c++ performance: gentoo vs. debian

2003-10-21 Thread usingflux
If you could please clarify for me, your saying compiling with -falign-functions=32
gives you gains?

On all the machines (athlon t-bird, p4) I have tried so far, -O3 always
decreases performance - O2 is best (dramatically so on something like a
celery). Most of the other options you see mentioned on the list show a
small incremental advantage, except for -falign-functions=4 which also
slows things down. Making this 32 gives a small advantage though.
