I was only giving information on switching, I've already done it, which
is how I know about the warning you get after changing the symlink on
amd64.

Even after syncing, I still don't get any make.defaults, so eix is now broken:

/etc/../usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2005.0/make.defaults No

Well, eix is broken anyway if it expects there to be a make.defaults in every
profile directory.

err I never suggested that he switch to the 2005.0 profile in the first
place, someone else did. I was just trying to make sure he had his link
right (which, as you pointed out above) I did wrong!

However on this second point I think you may be wrong.

/usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2005.0/parent contains .. and as
I understand it this points to the directory above
(i.e /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/ which contains a
make.defaults.

Although so does /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2004.3/parent,
yet /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2004.3/ contains a
make.defaults, so now I am confused!

Once your gentoo box is up and running, is there a need to update the
make.profile sym link as the profile versions change? I hadn't done
this in a year of using gentoo... I just made the change out of
curiosity on my "~x86" system, and after an 'emerge sync' it only caused
an upgrade of linux-headers.

When I tried this and then emerge --newuse -uDav, I got a message
complaining that there was no "make.defaults" file available in the
2005.0 profile. I assume a sync will take care of this?

switching back easier.

Assuming you are using x86.

Note that there are some extra steps when migrating an amd64 system from
2004.x to 2005.0. If you just change the link and do an "emerge world
-uavD --newuse", as I did, you'll get a message with the URL of the
instructions.

2005.0 is only the version of the install CDs and the profile. Once you
have a running system, you only need to set your profile to 2005.0 and do

emerge sync
emerge world -uavD --newuse

to have a completely up to date system.

With Gentoo, reinstallation is only necessary i the case of serious
hardware/wetware failure.

Not quite, dont forget the profile symlink on a running system needs
changing to get the 2005.0 profile. Can effect things like changing
default gcc versions etc.

$20 plus shipping may be a better investment than many, many hours of
your time. Especially considering how they are packaging this release:

>From http://store.gentoo.org/product_info.php?cPath=2&products_id=49

"For a faster install and less dependence on an Internet connection,
choose one of the 2-CD builds. The second CD includes pre-built binary
packages to get you up and running quickly. The "i686" set will run on
any system that is Pentium 2-compatible, which includes most systems
