[gentoo-user] Firefox Java enabled.
Hello friends, I have just compiled mozilla-firefox-1.0 with java use flag set. But even after that I cannot run java applets like bank login systems. So I tried to manually install java run-time, using j2re-1.4.6 from Sun. When I emerge it, I get an error saying it is not a suficient java VM, but isn't it meant to used alone? What do I need to do for mozilla-firefox run java? Alexander Computing Science - UFRJ -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

You may try blackdown java, also in portage Francisco Alexander wrote: Hello friends, I have just compiled mozilla-firefox-1.0 with java use flag set. Either blackdown-jre or sun-jre-bin should work. In the case of blackdown-jre, make sure that there is a symlink from /opt/blackdown-jre-1.4.2.01/plugin/i386/mozilla/libjavaplugin_oji.so to /usr/lib/nsbrowser/plugins Replace i386 if you use amd64/x86-64. I ask because this may not be a Java problem, per se, but a problem with your bank. I'm a Linux user, but my boyfriend (with whom I live) (still) uses Windows, and even under that he had a horrible time with our bank's Java system (because he's a Mozilla user). He either had to use IE, or downgrade Sun's Java, because the bank had not upgraded their server/software to use the current version of Java at that time, or to recognize that IE was not the only browser in the world (nothing said about OS compatibility). In any case, the point I'm making is that the problem may not be on your end, but on the other end, and you should investigate whether your bank's site supports your version of Java and your browser, if the bank login is the only thing that doesn't work. Re: [gentoo-user] Firefox Java enabled.
I use sun-jdk (from portage) without any trouble in firefox 1.0. I emerged it with mozilla use flag, so it created appropriate symlink in /usr/lib/nsbrowser/plugins, and firefox works just fine. That's all that was needed. I don't think emerging firefox with java use flag is vital, only thing that it does it make sure you have virtual/jre installed, only important thing is having appropriate symlink for your java version in /usr/lib/nsbrowser/plugins, ie. in case of sun-jdk-1.4.2.06 it looks like javaplugin.so - /opt/sun-jdk-1.4.2.06/jre/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so. BTW, for Java from sun, you probably shouldn't need whole sun-jdk, as somebody mentioned before, sun-jre-bin should be enough, but I haven't tried. -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list

HTH, Holly I go with that, if you are using sun java change it so the java window opens you can see the errors while accessing the bank software, thats how i discoverd my problems with the bank.
