You could. xmms is the only program I can think of that wants to pull 
in gnome 1.4 stuff. You may stand to lose some functionality in certain 
packages, and some might not put launchers in your gnome menu when you 
merge them.

It's easier to just catch xmms when it wants to update and do it 
manually.

Yeah, I suspect it may have been xmms merging control-center-1.4.x that broke
my previous install.
