Make sure that reiserfs-tools was installed when you set up the UML root_fs.

In /etc/init.d/consolefont, make sure the lines
for x in 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10
are changed to
for x in 1 #2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10

You only need one vc.

 and then it hangs there for ever.

Perhaps you could show us your UML Kernel configuration file?

[gentoo-user] UML problems

I followed the instruction of the doc-uml but resulted with the system booting but 
failing after entering: level3 Starting locale [ok]
here's the error messages when i  boot it:
