there was a known bug in this context triggered by Samba, which caused
smbmounts to freeze quite frequently.
Interesting question... How would I know?  Cann't find it in the kernel
configs, or by searching with emerge.
setting the env variable LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 disables NTPL,
so you could set that and then run smbfs, if that is indeed the problem.

I hava 2.6.0 and 2.6.1 kernels working perfectly with samba (mount and 
sharing as well). Maybe try

emerge samba

and look if it helps..

I have managed to get everything working in 2.6.0 kernel, EXCEPT, for
smbfs. It seems to hang... and eventually time out.

I can niether mount nor umount the filesystem
