Hit F2 at the boot prompt and see if some of the options 
such as noacpi might help.  I don't use a laptop but the 
comments indicate some options are for laptops.

I am trying to install Genttoo (I am a gentoo virgin :-)

Sorry I should have said - I have already tried turning off all the options
offered by pressing F2 - still no luck :-( The laptop currently has debian
woody on it and it boots fine from a debian boot cd :-(

You can also use the Gentoo 1.2 CD (more stable kernel), boot, eject
the CD, and insert and mount the 1.4 CD.  It worked for me.

Before the kernel boots you can enter boot options.  You may need to
try a few of them.  For example, acpi=off (not 'no') may improve
things.
